Are we ruling out Speight for 2018?
October 10th, 2017 at 2:46 PM ^
Peters completion percentage is 100% for his career. What are we even debating here?
October 10th, 2017 at 2:56 PM ^
This offense requires QB competence and confidence bordering on arrogance to work well.
The OL need only be solid not elite.
Either way Michigans defense next year has almost no seniors either and is going to be goddamned scary good and experienced.
As for this year Brandon Peters will get a shot and the armchair QB Michigan fans will remember again “oh yeah, gosh, so thats why they dont start RS freshman QBs!”

No. No more fucking transfers. We should roll with the young talent we have, not waste their eligibility so we can have more transfer experiments.

I'm going to have concerns if Speight is QB again in 2018. Wilton Speight was a generic 3 star prospect, and has played in that realm his career at U of M. When we get to 2018 Fall Camp, Brandon Peters had 3 years in the system and Dylan McCaffrey will have another year under his belt. If these two guys, who were more highly touted than Speight, cannot beat out speight, I will begin to grow concerned.

Yes we are, because he sucks

Yea but bro...he makes good reads!!! who cares if he over throws Zach Gentry, or tosses a low pass to Grant Perry? His reads are good!

Better than putting JOK's happy feet out there. He looks like he panics every time there is pressure.

not sure why we have to talk about it but my guess would be no. He will compete with Peters for starting spot.
October 10th, 2017 at 3:57 PM ^
I think he's going to move on and pursue a grad transfer. The IDEAL situation was Speight starts all of 2017, shows progress, plays well, commands the offense, etc We have a stepping stone type of season that leads into 2018 as a legit playoff contender and conference champion.
Forward to today, Speight is likely out for the year. We have a QB who isnt coming back next year (JOK) and 2 highly touted youngsters waiting their turn. It's time to let them loose. Starting Speight next season off an injury is basically the same as starting Peters or McCaffery except the latter will have 3 years remaining. For the future of the program, it makes sense. However, our 2018 national title talk might as well be pushed to 2019 in that scenario.
October 10th, 2017 at 5:30 PM ^
National title talk ? How about winning the BIG East for the first time.

Condolences to Speight for having a severe neck injury, and mercies in quick and complete healing. Fractured neck vertabrae used to be called a "broken neck". Speight won't know for over a month whether he'll need surgery or not. Regardless, I hope for his sake that he calls it quits. The "game" is not worth the risk of future injury that could lead to lifelong paralysis.

Speight and O'Korn have hit their ceilings, in my opinion. Sometimes good, sometimes bad, but after watching their struggles, I think we can safely say neither one is going to lead us to the playoffs, let alone the B1G or divisional titles. So why not start platooning Peters or McCaffrey, whichever is deemed better, and get them in there for some drives to see if they can light a spark? The thing that got us excited in the Spring game was seeing the strength and precision of Peters' arm for the intermediate routes, as well as his touch on the long ball, something we haven't seen much of this season from the first and second string guys. Maybe having a QB back there with a stronger arm will help us stretch the field and help open up the playcalling. It just felt like we settled for a FG on that first drive once we got in the red zone, those two fade routes had ZERO chance of success...seriously, is that all we have in the playbook with JOK at QB, low percentage fade routes? Sure, there are other legit factors (OL, WRs, etc.) but at what point do we see if one of the highly touted blue chips on the bench can make something happen, even for just one series? After all, we play Penn State in ten days, and they will stomp us if we roll with the same stuff, especially now that they have the film of how sparty throttled our offense.

Did anyone else see Speight sleeping under his raincoat? Maybe not sleeping but he was totally oblivious to what was happening in the game. Okron throws another pick about 11:30 left in the 4th. Camera pans over to Okorn and there is Wilton looking like he is catching some Zzzz's on the sideline. WTF? Not a good look at all.
October 10th, 2017 at 5:16 PM ^
Do you mean sitting down under the hooded jacket during the downpour ? I thought it was Peters trying to stay dry while listening on the headphone to the coaches box. Whoever it was, it didnt look like they wanted to be there.

When Coach Jim came aboard he told Ondre that he was sufficiently concerned about Ondre's health that he was actually concerned about Ondre continuing to play football. Ondre transferred to Texas Tech or somewhere. If the UM orthopods or other specialists even suggest the possibility of irreversible paralysis with the next big hit to Wilton's head/neck area, Coach Jim will deny Wilton a fith year and suggest he leave football altogether. Brandon Peters --- or possibly McCaffrey, but I doubt it --- will be under center against ND on September 1st next.

October 10th, 2017 at 7:40 PM ^
I was hoping he wouldn't start this year, not many developments for our team could be worse than speight starting next year.

the QB situation is dire...

i thought Speight was a senior? obviosly i was wrong, but what year is he?
October 11th, 2017 at 12:58 AM ^
He is a redshirt junior. He is a senior academically and a junior athletically. He can opt for a 5th year if he wishes.

October 10th, 2017 at 11:08 PM ^
Well, considering many of us were worried that a low ceiling QB like Speight again won the job this season and he proceeded to validate our concerns with mediocre play, he'd better not win the job next season.
If McCaffrey or Peters aren't better options than Speight next year, then Harbaugh is either bad at scouting QBs or bad at coaching them.
I question whether Speight ever plays again. Cracked vertebrae in your neck or spine is serious stuff.
October 11th, 2017 at 12:20 AM ^
Im not, but many here are.....
Speight played quite well as as a sophomore no less... He will be a senior next year and will be our QB.
October 11th, 2017 at 12:56 AM ^
I would love to sit here and tell you guys that there's no way Speight plays next year. But here's the thing. He's not good enough to get drafted. And Harbaugh seems to love him. I think we are stuck with him for another season. He is a great kid, never heard one person say a negative thing about him. But the talent isn't there. I know it sounds harsh but this is my opinion.
