IU fires Kevin Wilson
IU fires Kevin Wilson. Stunning. Reports coming in that it may have to do with off-the-field stuff, because he signed a six-year extension less than a year ago.
EDIT: Looks like Kevin Wilson is competent Tim Beckman:
Former Indiana player told ESPN on Thursday that he & at least 5 other IU players interviewed about Wilson's treatment of players

The issues you illustrate in the first three paragraphs are real. A coach who is not a great X and O guy would give me pause. CEO guys need the right coordinators around them.
But the solution you suggest is flat wrong. Particularly Purdue and IU. That would be a lateral move for him at best, at schools scarcely able to attract better talent than a good MAC team in the best of times and faced with schedules that are impossible climbs anyway.
He could prove himself over more time. Or he could go to a midlevel P5 school and thrive there. Or, given the sparseness of the coaching field this offseason with big-name teams like LSU already settling for suboptimal guys, he can get a bigger job and try to assemble a staff that can handle the demands.
Going to IU is about the worst thing Fleck could do.

answer the question: Do you seriously think that if the MSU or Wisconsin jobs were to open up (unexpected health issue or whatever) that PJ Fleck would get serious consideration?
Not a chance. He would be way down the list. His resume is pretty short. Power 5 jobs higher up the food chain than IU/Purdue level do not go to guys with resumes as thin as Fleck's.
Urban Meyer did not get a high level power 5 job after a nice showing at Bowling Green. He went to Utah (not in Pac-12 then), did well there, and then got hired by Florida. And Meyer has a way better overall resume at the time Utah hired him.
I am not an anti-Fleck guy. But the top half of the power 5 just do not hire guys with such short resumes based on winning the MAC.

And you are proving my point.
Hoke had one really good MAC team and that got him a Mountain West conference job at SDSU. He did well there too, and then walked all the way to Ann Arbor.
Fleck's next HC gig will be in the bottom half of the power 5, or at a school in a conference like the Mountain West.

I agree with several others on site that P.J. Fleck has his boat already hooked up behind his vehicle. Not too long of a drive either.

I feel we are getting back to normal and getting over the thing that shall not be mentioned that occurred last Saturday. (Hint- I'm talking about how we got screwed by the refs)

are clamoring for Bobby Knight to return to campus for a basketball team reunion but when the football coach allegedly acts like Bobby Knight he is fired. Those poor Hoosier people are probably very confused.

Purdue is probably excited that their head coaching job looks a bit more attractive now. Maybe?

Genuinely surprised by this. Wonder who they consider an attainable upgrade from Dr. Chaos

I forgot that he was on the Indiana staff. I think he did a decent job with David Molk.

Welp, don't have to worry about playing those guys next year.

I predict IU OC Greg Frey (RR's best UM assistant by far) will be the new HC.

In that vein it'll be interesting to see who's chosen as interim.

the vice presidency and now possibly all the coaches of its top college teams. The schools are all looking to make their programs great again. To what level of greatness, I have no idea.

It would have to be off the field stuff I would imagine, because Kevin Wilson is a hell of a coach. It's a shame if it is truely off the field stuff for everyone involved.

I guess I don't know how this happens. I mean, pushing kids to come back from injury is seemingly quite common for football teams, so to be so bad that players openly revolt means you are really bad about it.
I assume IU will actually get a new coach and just not stick with Tom Allen, but who knows.
December 1st, 2016 at 8:32 PM ^
It would have been easy to give Allen an interim tag if they were looking to hire someone else. "Permanent head coach" seems to imply that he's going to be the coach.
December 1st, 2016 at 9:23 PM ^
Wow. Shocking to say the least. Wilson is as good a coach as IU has ever had. Sucks for them but I guess it's good for Michigan because he's always given us fits. His teams played OSU tough as well.
December 1st, 2016 at 9:56 PM ^
Unless it's a legit reason, huge mistake. This was their best coach in over 40 years if not more.

IU was finally starting to be decent to watch... back to the bottom of the pile.
