Possible night game @ The Big House
This is behind a Rivals paywall. It says that Michigan and Notre Dame are in discussions about a night game at The Big House in 2011. Some are even saying that it's imminent and will be announced in the next couple weeks.

Let the caps lock yelling begin!
OH YEAH!!!!!!! LET'S BREAK OUT THE RAWK MUSIC TOO!!!! WOOHOOOO!!!!
But seriously, this would be amazing if it turns out to be true.
NICKELBACK RULEZ!!!!!!!!
CREED TOO!
I CANT WAYT UNTIL I CAN WARE MY MAIZE JERZEE!
Heck, when it gets later into the season, most of the games play into the evening. Sounds good to me.
if that's true, i'm buying my ticket now.
If it's true, I'm starting my tailgate now.
What's a night game without a drunk and disorderly?
Which is why it won't happen.
I bet they got a lot of hits at Rivals though.
That would simply be awesome.
I thought the world was suppose to come to an end in 2012.

Then the world better not end until 2012

I'm dumb
AAA--you wanted some updates, right?
I'll believe it when I hear confirmation. This isn't going to happen. It benefits no one financially and is a huge pain in the ass for the city.
You don't think ESPN wouldn't up the ante and help take care of any extra expenses to make this happen? We're talking Michigan and Notre Dame in what would be the first ever night game at the Big House. This would be historic.
No, that money is going to the SEC. Seriously, especially because neither team is a guaranteed power in 2011.
Who invited Debbie Downer? I mean seriously why all the smugness. It might happen, it might not. I would like it to happen and I do believe it benefits some people financially...the ones selling their tickets for double what they would have if it was a day game.
Either way...I would love to see a night game in AA!
It's St. Patricks Day...grab a beer. I think you could use one.
Agreed, +1
What makes you so sure it's so unlikely to happen? It's not like we haven't played in a night game before. I think the recent absence was mostly due to the stadium renovations taking place and the difficulty of bringing in lights, but I could be wrong. A football Saturday is a pain in the ass for the city regardless of what time the game is at.
I don't remember the last planned night game in Ann Arbor. The MSU game just went too late.
The school won't sell any extra tickets for a night game and the TV contracts aren't going to pay the Big Ten more for having a night game. The city has to deal with more tailgating time--which means longer hours for police overtime in very difficult budgetary conditions.
I think it would be really cool, but it doesn't make sense financially for the school or the city.
It would be about image, prestige, recruiting and revitalizing the fan base.
somebody neg-bang this guy. he's being too logical.
You were completely opposed to the idea of the World Cup coming here for that reason, right?
110000 people show up regardless for Michigan games. No one shows up if the World Cup doesn't come to town. Plus international visitors buy hotel rooms and meals, which largely doesn't happen for the mostly local football crowds.
"Plus international visitors buy hotel rooms and meals, which largely doesn't happen for the mostly local football crowds."
I think this is why it would be a good reason to have a night game. Most out-of-town visitors (like myself coming from Chicago) travel in the morning of the game, and sometimes leave after. No sense in renting a hotel room if I have plenty of time to drive back to Chicago. If it was a night game, I would be more inclined to purchase a hotel room and stick around for the partying after. It would also allow more time to tailgate, get hammered, and buy useless merchandise and extra food I wouldn't normally purchase. Michigan has a lot of out of state fans (unlike MSU), and a night game would definitely benefit our kind.
The only thing that could make this better...
...is if it was under the lights at The Big House.
...never get tired of that one
the next 5 games, Matthews totaled just 1 catch for 14 yards. that, my friends, deserves a "Yo!"
edit: "Yo!" - as in - Yo, why'd they stop going to Matthews?
Watchin this can make ya want to hibernate between seasons sinply to get back to the season again. Under the lights would be toooo awesome>
oh holy hell....
RAWK music? check
Night game? check

Wendy - please see above...the Bear could easily be adapted to a Wolverine I believe.
There have been several UM - ND night games in South Bend. The first was in 1982. I attended one of these in 1986. It was a nailbiter, with Michigan prevailing 24-23. One of my favorite games ever. I couldn't find my friend Mike (with my ticket)and was stuck. (for you youngsters, this was prior to the time when we all had cell phones.) Someone at will call had pity, and gave me a free ticket in the Michigan player family area. It was a great seat, and a wonderful game.
This happens to be a great time of year to consider a night game. I have to agree with Brian that it can be pretty cold at night in April (cf. Spring Game.) But early September, on a warm Fall day, would be the perfect time to consider.
I was at the '86 night game in South Bend until the security guys asked me to leave because me, my Anthony Carter jersey, my inebriation and my mouth were somehow inciting local fans to want to attack me.
And they made me leave the stadium.
Night games in South Bend suck.
2011 night game vs ND in Ann Arbor? Perhaps I ought now start figuring out how to get on Big House security patrol...
...payback will be sweet!
Gave me goose bumps all over again...
I was going to stick around and get some more work done but now I feel like having a beer or two (or four)...
It would be too late for the “old people” (I don’t mean by age but the ones who get pissy when you stand up on third down) to come, give us all day to booze, and the stadium is done... Just thinking about it makes it too loud in my head.
March 17th, 2010 at 10:01 PM ^
I hope it seriously isn't too late for the old people, or else we'd have a lot of empty seats. They're not going to not buy season tickets just because of one night game.
this would be great. the big house under the lights... and against notre dame? that would be amazing, not to mention the great recruiting tool it would be
I hope they do at least one night game every year
to properly do a night game at the big house.
Huge game, early enough in the season that it'll still be warm out... Ann Arbor would definitely be rocking. I think there might even be an influx of other people to AA just to be in town the night of the game.
You don't do it for a second hand opponent, only a national game. This would be great, and well worth the cost of putting up the lighting.
I may be mistaken, but I think I recall reading somewhere that the temporary lighting is rented by the television crews.

Hello ABC Primetime game! It's been a while since Musberger has been to the Big House.
Keith Jackson comes back for this one!
Not really, but if he did...?...Whoa Nelly!
March 18th, 2010 at 10:28 AM ^
If there were a night game in AA against ND with Keith Jackson calling the game...........I would go so far as to say a football environment couldn't get any better (with the only exception being substituting ND for OSU).
