OT: Hazell out at Purdue

Submitted by dnak438 on

Per Purdue's Rivals site (https://purdue.rivals.com/news/darrell-hazell-is-out-as-purdue-s-footba…):

After managing only a 9-33 record over three-plus seasons, Darrell Hazell is no longer Purdue’s head coach, GoldandBlack.com has learned.

Hazell was fired Sunday, one day after Iowa dominated the Boilermakers 49-35 on Homecoming.

Receivers coach Gerad Parker will be the interim coach. Parker is in his fourth season with the Boilermakers, coming on staff as tight ends coach before moving to coach the receivers last season.

The Purdue job is, but I can't see PJ Fleck turning down a B1G job. He won't get a sniff from LSU, Texas, or USC, so what are his options? It's not one of the B1G elites, but it is still the richest conference, in a weak division.

Idk if it is a worse job. He's just as close to the same pools of talent. And he'd get a massive raise. And it's not like the B1G West is made up of juggernauts like UM and OSU. He could compete within the division within a couple seasons if he makes the right moves.

But I would probably still stay at Western. Not because it's a better job but because he could wait for a better offer than Purdue

I would bet my life savings Fleck gets a better job than Purdue. He will be one of the most sought after coaches following Herman. There's no way Purdue will be even a top 5 open job.

I think Purdue needs to wait it out and see who gets canned at other jobs before making a hire. If I'm them I go after a power 5 offensive coordinator or one of the power 5 fired head coaches:
1. Les Miles
2. Helfrich (maybe available)
3. Strong (maybe available)
4. Gus Malzahn (maybe available)
5. Brian Kelly (doubtful)

I don't think some of you realize how bad Purdue is.

Also, do some of you look up coaching salaries before making these suggestions?

Just because someone is available doesn't mean he is going to Purdue.

They'd all take a year off and collect their paychecks than work at Purdue.

And if you're someone like Helfrich, why not go to somewhere like Fresno St.? You have a better opporunity and it's your recruiting base than getting destroyed in the B1G week in and week out.

Miles could be a potential candidate at ND if Kelly was fired, you aren't a candidate at ND or Texas and go to Purdue.

Strong will easily get another solid P5 job as will Kelly. It's not like either is old or hasn't had success...just may have worn out their welcome at their current stops.

Hold out to see if UT lets go of Strong. I think he could get Purdue back to a 8 win team and he has much more longevity in him than Miles or Fleck (obviously for different reasons).

I like Hoke. I hope he does well, but for the love of Pete I hope Purdue hires maybe one of the academy coaches and hires Home as a DL coach who can recruit.

He'd probably. It want to do it, but he'd be awesome. Able to get decent talent, and coaching a position he's proven capable of doing
