Is that why V and F have crushed every competitior that's tried to run a drive time show against them? is that why they almost single-handedly folded 105.1 as a sports campaign? Is that why they've stayed together longer than anyone else in Detroit radio? because of the Tigers?

Like Valenti or not he knows his schtick and he's damn good at it. They're the best show Detroit has and they've crushed everyone. Remember when Stoney and Wojo were #1 in Detroit? Yea, both of them got shitcanned because their network couldn't compete with V and F...that's why both are on 97.1 now. In an industry that's highly competitive and lasting 5 years together as a talk show is an achievement V and F have been together for 14(?) years.

I don't listen to them much anymore but honestly, he's got it all down to an art: Pick fights with specific fan bases, call people stupid, rile people up, hang up on them, be a master of hyperbole, have a huge reaction to everything that happens in sports. It just makes more inarticulate idiots want to call up and one up the guy before them and they get punched in the face as well. You'll notice (at least in their hey-day) they rarely put on callers who agreed with Mike.

He's the king of the mountain and Detroit just laps it up. They are consistently rated amongst the top 5-7 most listened to local-only broadcasts and they aren't even in a top 10 media market.

I have no clue how you got negged for that.  You're dead on.

You don't have to like Mike Valenti (I can't imagine why any Michigan fan would), but you are blind if you can't acknowledge his talent and ability to drive ratings.

There's a reason he gets away with constantly calling his own station and program directors idiots on the air, and it's certainly not because they have the Tigers.  It's because CBS Radio would fire everyone at that station if it meant they can keep Valenti's unstoppable ratings train on the tracks.

(Terry Foster, on the other hand, is a complete tool who was in the right place at the right time.  That show is markedly better when he's on vacation and ANYBODY else fills in with Valenti.)

You know, I get life insurance coverage through work (fairly common in the utility industry anyway), but the payouts are kind of indexed to salary.

*looks at salary*

I hope it isn't THAT serious, whatever it is...

You're pretty much spot on. Given some assumptions I did a 53 year old male, Preferred Tobacco (smokeless), with a 7 pay premium of $2 million each.

Assuming they did minimum face to let cash build (initial face is still over 40 million), that'd be a target premium of $551,800 so the commission check would be around $634,000. Not a bad days work.
