I read recently that Canada didn't gain complete independence from Great Britain until 1982. (Which . . . wow. Canada is younger than me then.) It wasn't until then that Canada was allowed to amend its constitution without having to ask the mother country for permission. It took 'em four centuries of colonial potty-training to learn how to function on their own?

technically they still do not have full independence...The official head of state of Canada is Queen Elizabeth II.
