OT : Microwave or Toaster Oven ?
If you could only have one or the other
in your house, which would it be?
Personally, I was all Microwave all the time for many
years. Two years ago for a variety of
reasons, we ditched the microwave for the
toaster oven and haven't looked back since.
There is nothing we haven't been able to cook
without the microwave or felt inconvenienced by
the few extra minutes it sometimes takes.
Our food tastes so much better and we
just feel healthier than before. Has anyone else
made a switch either way?
Kicking back with a bad-ass nacho plate to watch
football has been greatly enhanced with the T.O, just sayin'.

Microwave, broiler, convection, etc. all in one. Only downside is $2000.

Without Vinnie "The Microwave" Johnson and the instant offense he provided off the bench, who knows if the Pistons would have been able to pull off their back-to-back NBA Championships in '89 & '90.
Though I'm not a big NBA fan, I followed that team closely enough to know how important Vinnie was when Chuck Daly needed to add some quick heat to the offense. Probably my favorite Piston from that era.
I watched Vinnie Johnson warming up before a game one time, and it was insane. The dude never missed for like ten minutes straight.
Adrian Dantley was another freak of nature who played on that team for a little while. Though not that tall, he absolutely ruled in the paint. I read an article saying that now that he's retired, AD volunteers as a crossing guard for kids going to school. Righteous!
Loved those teams! Laimbeer and Rodman didn't let anything go in the paint. And several of the team said that Rodman could have won the slam dunk contest anytime he wanted to enter it, but just didn't care. Those teams were loaded... Prior to those teams, though, my favorite player was Kelly Tripuka. Not a lot of talent, and went to ND, but he never left anything on the court.
So it was you that opened that new place downtown then?

or corian? or quartz?
Corian. Best decision we made when building our house. Granite, to me, looks like vomit. Its so busy!
But Corian scratches really easily.
...and corian is so 2000. Quartz is what a lot of the flippers are using
with all the kids, we are pretty hard on the house, the kitchen in particular. last time i re-did our kitchen was when we escaped socal, and i used granite in the kitchen - looked great but we only lived there about 4 months before we sold and got back home to michigan. fast-forward a dozen years and a bunch more kids, and i'd like to update our kitchen here. even quick, cheap laminate replacement tops would be good for another 10-15 yrs until the kids are out of the house.
so no kidding, thank you guys for the input.
and I like it way better than granite.
my mom has had white laminate in her kitchen forever, with a butcher block island. they re-did some of the kitchen a few years back, and she went with white laminate again. it's so durable and cleans up really nicely with a mildly abrasive cleaner. not the trendiest/most beautiful thing, but really hardworking.
We're redoing our kitchen right now. I chose Caesarstone for the bulk of the countertops and honed marble for the island. Everyone I talked to warned me off of the marble, but I love the way it looks, and don't mind etching. Plus, you can have it rehoned, making it look new again. Good for resale value.
We have both a toaster oven, which I love way more than I thought I would, and a microwave. Got the toaster oven at husband's urging when our toaster died. But with the remodel, we're getting a steam oven and a regular oven. I'm hoping the steam oven takes the place of the microwave. As for cooktops, I'm getting a 15" gas cooktop and a 15" induction cooktop, to sit side by side. Induction is awesome. We currently have a portable induction burner while we have no kitchen. It heats up at least 30% faster than either gas or electric, and stops cooking immediately when you turn it off. You have to get used to dealing with degrees -- at least that's how the portable one works. It goes up or down by 10 degrees, so learning to use it is really about trial and error. Also, the surface doesn't get as hot as a traditional ceramic electric cooktop, and of course, there's no open flame. And it turns off when there's no pot on it. I liked the safety of it for my kids.
Yep, but it can be buffed out really easily, too. And doesn't immediately break glassware when you drop it. Granite is a destroyer of glass and porcelen.
You also have to be careful what you get on Corian, as certain chemicals can ruin it.

yeah, i just embrace the etching. and try to work with the more acidic foods on the concrete perimeter, but i'm not super uptight about it.
On a counter? LOL!!

We are also dos people...I installed this 1275W u-wave built in - I really like nuking a cup of hot water and running with Yuban.
It makes cleaning the cat box happen before the commute... my life sucks because of a cat. My lab sleeps through most mornings now...the golden years have begun.
Microwaves are good for warming things up, not for cooking them. I haven't had a toaster oven in more than 10 years, and the only thing I miss about it is toasting garlic bread. I use the oven broiler, but that's a little overkill. Wish I could talk the wife into losing more counter space for another TO...
