- ANOTHER EDIT: Here is an analysis of BC's defense this year by Ian Boyd of Football Study Hall: http://www.footballstudyhall.com/2015/12/15/10115630/how-boston-college-eagles-built-a-top-5-defense
Sam Webb confirms:
Multiple sources saying Boston College def. coordinator Don Brown to #Michigan is true. Word from a BC player is Brown informed team already

isolated bad games as proof as literally ALL coordinators have those. Durkin looked bad at times. So have Saban, Narduzzi, Dantonio, etc all.

From BC player that tipped us off on Brown to #Michigan: "With our talent we were the best defense in the country..."
— Sam Webb (@SamWebb77) December 20, 2015
continued... "So I could only imagine what Michigan will be like."

But then I remembered, we have Harbaugh making this decision!!! Must be a good choice. Welcome, Coach Brown.

The mind behind Boston College's defense? I could live with that.
One question I have then, as I did not watch more than a handful of BC games this season - is Brown a 3-4 guy per the prediction made in a thread probably five or six days ago? I ask because I still think we could cobble a 3-4 together with this roster, but like everyone else, the LBs sort of concern me.

says "they were a multiple front defense but they tended to play a lot of [4-3] Over" (LINK)

Are some people seriously questioning this hire? Are they seriously questioning Harbaugh's judgement? Bahaha!

Took UMass to an FCS championship game as a head coach, too. Impressive resume for a guy who has never worked west of Springfield.

I like the hire - but I'm biased. The first 2 things I look for in a DC are:
1. Loves to Blitz
2. Coaches Baseball

3. Is old.

BCS total defense ranking:
2015: 1
2014: 11
I'll have to look at how his Maryland defenses fared.
What's even more impressive about his BC rankings is that the BC offense was HORRIBLE so the defense was on the field more often.

2012: 5
2011: 32
Maryland:
2010: 44
2009: 69
He improves defense's rankings everywhere he's been. Dude seems legit with that and the fact Harbaugh wants him.
And he's 60, and been a DC for the last 6 years. So he probably isn't going to have the longest line for HC ops, so I imagine he'll be at UM a while.

How much of BC's excellent defensive ranking can be attributed to opposing offenses playing a tad bit more conservative due to the fact that they know BC couldn't do much of anything on offense?

as defenses will wear down because the offense's ineffectiveness at possessing the ball.
December 20th, 2015 at 5:43 PM ^
Was Michigan's 2014 defense helped or hurt by the terrible offense? Sure other teams could have played conservative but it felt more like the defense couldn't only keep the team in the game for so long before they started wearing down in the 4th quarter.

Coach Brown loves to bring presure and exotic blitzes. As opposed to Spicyweiner who prefers erotic blitzes.

He beat App State in the '00's, which is more than you can say for us.
Edit: Oops, no he didn't. He lost. He held Jerry Moore / Armanti Edwards to 28 points vs. our 34 points though.
December 20th, 2015 at 8:21 PM ^
is he also going to coach the linebackers? seems like we need someone to do that.... and what happens to partridge???
December 20th, 2015 at 9:06 PM ^
Really not sure how I feel about this. I get the sense that we're hiring someone who had one really, really, really good year at BC with mediocre talent, but a lot of middling, so-so years before that. He's also 60.
I'll be happy to be wrong, but I'm certainly not ecstatic like everyone else here.
