A look ahead to 2016 (schedule)

Submitted by James Burrill Angell on
First time I looked ahead at next year's schedule. Next year we go to 9 conference games (and consequently only 3 non-Conf). Next year the non-conference is pretty weak (Hawaii, UCF, Colorado). The conference on the other hand gets rough. We pick up a home game with Wisconsin and then play road games at Iowa, MSU and OSU (yes that's road games against the top three 2015 conference teams). Yeesh. At least the team will get a softer start to the season to gear up for a grueling conference schedule.

How about some bowl game hype and prognostication right now?

Also - here's a song that is great anytime, including after a good old-fashioned and unfortunate butt whuppin':

The Yellow and Blue

- C. M. Gayley, M. W. Balfe

Sing to the colors that float in the light;

Hurrah for the Yellow and Blue!

Yellow the stars as they ride through the night

And reel in a rollicking crew;

Yellow the field where ripens the grain

And yellow the moon on the harvest wain;

HAIL!

Hail to the colors that float in the light

Hurrah for the Yellow and Blue!

Blue are the billows that bow to the sun

When yellow-robed morning is due.

Blue are the curtains that evening has spun

The slumbers of Phoebus to woo;

Blue are the blossoms to memory dear

And blue is the sapphire and gleams like a tear;

HAIL!

Hail to the ribbons that nature has spun;

Hurrah for the Yellow and Blue!

Here's to the college whose colors we wear,

Here's to the hearts that are true!

Here's to the maid of the golden hair,

And eyes that are brimming with blue!

Garlands of bluebells and maize intertwine,

And hearts that are true and voices combine;

HAIL!

Hail to the college whose colors we wear;

Hurrah for the Yellow and Blue!

THOSE WHO STAY WILL BE CHAMPIONS!

If Iowa plays according to the pattern they have established over the tenure of Ferentz, this year will be an aberration.  Iowa is always tough at home, but UM should be favored in that game.  Assuming UM doesn't suffer through a rash of injuries, next year should be 9-3 at worst, and possibly much better.

I believe that Iowa has many seniors, and it's a good time to get Wisconsin back on the schedule.

Should be favored in every game other than the two that matter.

what Iowa loses so don't know how they'll be next year.  Cook should be a pretty big loss for MSU as well as a couple of their oline.  MSU will still be good and it's always a tough game in East Lansing, but I'm not terrified of that game.  I'd say that's a toss up right now.

Is not going to matter if we can't run the ball. No team can consistently compete at a high level and really have no formula to consistently move the ball on the ground. Smith will not do. I don't think the D is going to be an elite outfit after watching today. I think the best bet for next year is to go with Jabrill as the full time tailback. Thomas has played very well lately and Peppers is not a spectacular defensive player. (He was no where to be found today). We need a consistent way to threaten teams offensively. OSU was not concerned with our offense AT ALL today. If Lewis returns our secondary will be above average without him. He is our best player and needs to be utilized where he can most influence the game.

I like the idea of Smith at fullback and third down tailback. Chris Floyd 2.0. If not Drake, Higdon, or one of the freshman, maybe Peppers moves over to tailback. Dymonte Thomas or Kinnell are looking like solid prospects to play Peppers' position next year...is that a crazy thought?

I don't think it's crazy at all. When teams call a timeout just because #5 steps on the field, it should tell you how special of a player he is. If he moves to the offensive backfield full-time he becomes a heisman candidate day one. The difference he makes on offense versus defense is exponentially greater. I'm on the crazy train with you.

Either the 2013 heisman contender in Taysom or O Korn would do very well under Harbaugh. The OL and RBs need to step up along with LBs. Our defense will probably be better if we get Gary and everybody stays healthy unlike this year.

Season-ending injuries to 1/2 of the staring 4 is uncommon. Add in the season-ending loss of the other 1-tech and the lack of Buck depth, it's a bad combination. Then add the other backups (Hurst, Taco) are pass rushers instead of run stoppers ... OSU was bound to feast on them. Same reason IU ran wild. Now bring back everyone but the Bucks, add 3 physically gifted Bucks (albeit green), Elliott and hopefully Gary - our front 4 becomes very deep and talented.

Home schedule is much easier.

We're better than both Wisconsin and Penn State this year and I think we'll improve at a faster rate than either of them.

Honestly, anything less than 8-0 in the Big House would be bad in year 2 of Harbaugh.

As for the road, our first one is at Rutgers (easy win). Michigan only leaves the state once before mid-November and that's to a small Rutgers stadium that should be 40% M fans.

The last three are difficult (@MSU, @Iowa, @OSU), but I like our chances to improve relative to all of those teams next year.

Agree 100%.  We are already better than PSU and Wisconsin is pretty much the same as Northwestern and PSU.  They all played each other and NW played even with both Wiscy and PSU.

8-0 in AA and 1-0 in New Jersey.

The season will be based on what we do in Iowa, EL, and Columbus.  If we lose any other game next year it will be because O'Korn is not Rudock level (or whomever wins the job), and another year of Drevno did not improve the OL to a point we can run any better than we did this year.

And Iowa is not fucking juggernaut.  People were calling for Ferentz head 12 months ago.  Iowa and UM are probably even in talent this year as it is, and that's a year removed from Hoke.  Lot of recency bias with Iowa...

A lot is going to depend on what turns up at QB and RB.  I think we can fairly well guess how most of the rest of the team is going to perform vs most opponents.  For better or worse, we pretty much know what the O line, receivers, and defense will look like (unless LB is a total black hole -- can we get a grad transfer LB?  Please?)  QB is a wildcard, RB stays about the same unless Walker or some other freshman turns out to be the game breaker we need.

With a good passer and a RB that doesn't require massive holes to pick up yards, we can beat any non-OSU team we'll play.  Without those things, a 9-3ish season is probably in store once again.

UMfan21

next year our QB will have more than a full year in the system also. Rudock came in late and I think it showed in the first half of the season, he wasn't on the same page as his WRs. regardless who the 2016 QB is, they should start at a higher level than Rudock started

StraightDave

MSU is a toss up, OSU is an L, and Iowa will be a toss up as well.   UM will not be a serious playoff team if Harbaugh doesn't get some LBs to transfer in.

MSU is losing 1st round draft picks at QB, LT, and DE.  Unless your Bama or FSU you take a big step back and they will, no matter how much some people on this board insists they will magically replace those guys with players that are just as good.

With our linebacker situation, it is my opinion that next year's ceiling is 9-3. We will also be breaking in a new quarterback. Could have better overall team talent and still lose 4.

That said, I will be cheering them on an praying Harbaugh can work his magic.

Schedule sets up nice with 6 out of the first 7 at home with a trip to Piscataway as the only road game. It should allow the new QB to get into a nice groove. I'll be shocked if this team isn't 7-0 when they head to East Lansing.

I remember what the team looked like in the spring game. What a vast difference it was between that and the regular season. Another year of Harbaugh will make a huge difference.

We only have 4 road games next year.

We leave Ann Arbor once until Oct 29.  And that's to New Jersey.

The non conf is a joke

PSU is coached by a thinner, tanner Brady Hoke who loses Zettel and Nassib.   We are already better than PSU today in year 1 of a reclamation project - next year we'll have a wider gap. We have that at home.

Wisconsin is not all that right now.  They lost to Northwestern at home.  We have that at home.

Both MSU and OSU lose a ton of talent, esp their OL and DL.

UM returns most of their lines.  Our issues are what the QB situation is, and the LBs and the run game.

I don't expect either MSU or OSU to "suck" but both lose significant front line talent.  They have good staffs but will have a lot of youth in a lot of spots.

I think UM needs to make in 2016 because 2017 will be a very young team.  Not one player not named Maurice Hurst who played in today's D in the 2 deep will be here in 2017.   (mone was not in 2 deep but will be here for 2017 but that's 2 players in the 2 deep if we had everyone healthy)

The season will be determined by @Iowa, @MSU, @OSU.  We'll be favored in every other game and most by double digits IMO.

While they might lose some good olineman, they just seem to reload each year.  They've scored 42 points against UM each of the last 3 years, and they've lost olineman every year.  Last year their young oline struggled early in the season but they got the kinks worked out and were pretty darn good by the end of the year.

They other thing with OSU and being young, by the time the UM game rolls around the young players have already played 11 games.  They'll have plenty of experience under their belt by the end of November.

Where their young players will really be tested is when they go to Oklahoma in September.

alum96

November 28th, 2015 at 9:44 PM ^

While true, almost our entire DL and OL will be 5th year seniors next year as well.  If we cannot win the battle of the trenches with 80% of our linemen 22/23 year olds and OSU throwing a lot of 19 year olds out there I dont know when we will.

funkywolve

November 28th, 2015 at 10:24 PM ^

I scratch my head on the oline though.  I thought by November we would really start to see some improvement in the running game.  These guys all have a lot of starts under their belt and I thought an upgrade in coaching this year.  However, the running game didn't seem to improve much during the year.  I'm starting to wonder if these guys are what they are at this point.

Is there any hope of the Big Ten swapping OSU/MSU back to the off/on scheduling? I fucking haaaaate that we play both at home or on the road in the same season now.

JayMo4

November 28th, 2015 at 8:54 PM ^

Yes, when they revamp the divisions again, which is bound to happen as OSU and MSU continue to play well, Michigan and Penn State get better, and Iowa slides back down into the pack.  Nebraska isn't returning to dominance any time soon, and Wisconsin's best days are behind them IMO.  Northwestern's ceiling is right about where they are right now.  At some point, people are going to start being bothered by this.  If MSU thumps Iowa, the problem already looks pretty glaring.  Remember what OSU did to Wisconsin last year.  These divisions aren't even and aren't going to be any time in the next decade without a realignment.

All that said, watch them do it and give us MSU on the road twice in a row again!

buddhafrog

November 28th, 2015 at 9:36 PM ^

I don't think this happens until there is a larger conference change in numbers or something of the like.

We need to play OSU and MSU every year, and don't want that to be an automatic non-division game. PSU is too east to play in the west. I don't know what the solutions are at all. I think we're stuck.

But we should alternate OSU and MSU home/away for sure.

Jaysin1414

November 28th, 2015 at 7:58 PM ^

I'm guessing that OSU loses everyone that is suspected of going pro. Barrett and the remaining players will be very, very good. With Cook leaving, next season is a great time to take out some frustration on Sparty.

That all being said, I think Michigan goes 2-1 against the tough road games. The loss will probably be to Iowa as my knucklehead brother-in-law is a huge Hawkeyes fan and the football gods will spite me for the laughs...

JayMo4

November 28th, 2015 at 8:57 PM ^

Doesn't matter who OSU loses, the next guy coming will be just as good in most cases.  They are the deepest team in the country, or 1a 1b with Alabama.  As long as Meyer is there, best we can hope for is to be close to even in talent.  Anyone waiting around for their talent to disappear should hope Urban leaves and the next guy is their RR/Hoke/pick the guy you dislike most.

If we want to beat them, we have to out-scheme and out-develop them.  It's an awfully tall task.

funkywolve

November 28th, 2015 at 10:27 PM ^

I think the bigger issue is getting the talent level on par with OSU.  Harbaugh seems to be doing pretty good in his first full year of recruiting.  The X's and O's as well as player development I think will be there with Harbaugh.  The key is Harbaugh getting a few recruiting classes in here to even out the talent and athleticism.

JTGoBlue

November 28th, 2015 at 7:57 PM ^

If everyone comes back, we are loaded. The secondary will be lights out, we return most of the DL, adding Mone and getting Glasgow back. Furbush, McCray, and Gedeon are a great start to the LB corps, and we will certainly add more with the recruiting class. The OL will be deep and experienced. Chesson, Darboh, Cole, and Harris at receiver. Butt will be an all American with depth behind him. O'Korn is experienced and talented..with Harbaugh coaching he will be an upgrade to Rudock. Smith, Drake, and Higdon come back with experience, with top talent coming in at running back. The talent and the coaching will be there.
