OT - "Urban Meyer said JT Barrett has to undergo counseling thru OSU & "forfeited his scholarship for one term"

Since JT is an out-of-state student, a semester's worth of tuition would be roughly ~$13,700, which is excluding room-and-board because I don't know if that is included in the punishment.

EDIT: Barrett will be losing his scholarship for the summer term, which is based on credit hours and not a flat tuition. (https://twitter.com/GerdOZone/status/661236358334296064). So... a 3 credit hour course is roughly ~$3,300. IIRC, when Mewhort and Stoneburner's scholarships were revoked it was about $6,600 lost (2 summer courses).

He'll get a student loan, which he wont have to pay right away, and when he get's his draft assessment in a year or two, and a personal loan from a bank based on future wages, he'll pay it off.  This really doesnt affect him much.

It's amazing how Meyer's punishment hurts the player, but not the team's chance of winning a game. We know nothing about Barrett's finances or what he's going through right now as a person who may have a disease or as a young man trying to get through a time when he's not allowed to earn a living.

My understanding is the Stoneburner family can handle this type of punishment. We don;t know about Barett.

Can coaches just fine players whenever they want? Is that a thing? Is it one we should be OK with?

Really?  how is this a fine?  It's not an arbitrary amount set to be paid.  He's paying for his education because his primary means of paying it is forfeit because he did something very wrong.  I guarantee you that the paperwork he signs when he enrolls has a code of conduct portion.  I also guarantee that he did not abide by that code of conduct and as such is punishable by dismissal from the team if the coach determines.  Who cares if he can afford the punishment.  Don't break the rules and laws and don't worry about paying the penalty.

Look at the situation. It's a fine because he's gonna have to pay that money. We all know those summer workouts aren't actually optional. And the NCAA makes it's nearly impossible to just switch schools (well, for athletes, coaches are obviously a different story), so he doesn't have much of an option. The problem is that the big university is still gonna be making money off him. Never mind the fact they preach how "players are student-athletes and their compensation is the scholarship". No other employer can get away with basically firing an employee for three months but still making them come in and work for free. You take away the scholarship, cut them from the team. You can't have it both ways. (Not saying Barrett should have been cut, but he also shouldn't have been punished this way)

I don't think anyone is holding a gun to his head saying he has to stay there.  Ignoring JT's free will ignores his responsibility.  he's more than welcome I'm sure to say he's transferring.  Is it optimal for him?  No.  Is it something he should do if he was making good rational decisions?  no.  But it's his choice just like it was his choice to get in the car.  And I don't care what school this happens at.  I also don't care if they are underage.  They get in a car when drunk they should get the book thrown at them and it's on them to decide if they want to put up with the punishment.

Meyer did the whole scholarship thing before with Jack Mewhort and Jake Stoneburner ... its a heavy handed punishment but I'm okay with it. Scholarships and playing football are both privileges ..

Just like JT Barrett, they lost summer aid. There is a pretty big difference. I think the penalty definitely more than fits the crime here, but I also think OSU is playing this up to the media by saying he lost his scholarship to look better on discipline after the Urban Meyer Bill O'Reilly interview that has gone viral now.

Verbiage semantics, and I obviously posted my thoughts before they were clarified through a spokeperson.

I don't think this is Meyer playing it up here. This punishment has been handed down before and is a tool he has used. According to 11W this cost was around $6,600 to Mewhort and Stoneburner during the summer of 2012.

I guess I just can't get that fired up about how Urban is punishing a kid for a DUI and I can't get that fired up for his remarks on O'Reilly knowing that the public knows so much more about the kind of individual Jameis was alleged to be beyond the crab legs incident.

There's bigger fish to fry and larger issues I care about.

He is only losing summer aid. It is a sizable penalty, but nowhere near the penalty of losing his scholarship.  But it sounds a lot better for the media that he lost his scholarship. If he lost his scholarship during the semester, he would have also lost all the privileges of a football scholarship player like training table. I highly doubt they would do that to an important player like Barrett.

This just seems so craven to me. For the sake of public relations, Meyer must be seen as coming down hard on Barrett after his OVI.  But of course Barrett is a very good player, and Meyer also wants him to play. So Meyer uses a method designed to make his job easier at the expense of the student-athlete.   (I doubt the legal system will fine him as much as Ohio State is taking away.)  Meanwhile, Urban Meyer gets to keep his quarterback on the field after a short suspension. Because the punishment is harsh, we can all cheer Urban for giving us Justice, totally disregarding the fact that he put his own interests before anyone else's. Financial penalties are not an appropriate sanction for unpaid athletes.

The only thing that will happen is he will lose his "summer aid." Meaning, he will have to pay his own way for any classes he takes during summer semester.

Yeah, I just bet he was going to take a crushing course load over the summer as an Ohio State football player.

This penalty is harsh man.  It's going to cost him Tens of dollars.

Read carefully.  It says that his SUMMER SCHOLARSHIP is suspended IF he chooses to take courses this summer.  There are probably only 5 players (2 punters, 2 kickers, and 1 walk on QB)  at OSU that attend summer classes.  This is uncle Urban way of "imposing punishment".  So JT....No cupcakes with dinner in the summer and we will forgive you...signed uncle Urban Lier

This feels like a bunch of tough talk without much teeth.  So he loses "summer aid" but not his captaincy?  This feels like a bunch of grandstanding and moralizing from a coach whose known for saying one thing while letting other things go on.

Urbz running damage control on his win at all costs image. Nice move, but transparent.  Much easier to play disciplinarian after winning a national tite and having a stud backup QB.

It's not actually Barrett's fault though, since Urban failed to include "no drunk driving" on this lulzy mural in the Ohio State locker room

Not quite the same as "Those who stay will be champions."    This was mocked when it was put up, but I neversaw a picture.  It's sort of creepy that they need to state it that way?  Does Michigan have anything like that?

If only Florida had a "NO Murder" sign....

He loses his summer financial aid....which he can get back?

What the....?

"Son, we're fining you $X dollars....but we'll give you that money back if you promise to not do it again."

Will loose his summer aid either your dumber then I thought. He will have mom or dad pay the 13K by getting a loan or something and a OSU Booster will pay off that loan for them. It happens every day in college as I've seen it first hand and have experienced it when I played college baseball. Oldest trick in the book to save his playing time when it counts

And, young man, if it happens one more time, you will be suspended from half of all of our remaining games.  That's right -- no defensive snaps for you AT ALL.

That will be a new chapter in the second edition of Urb's leadership book

In the summer of 2016 JT Barrett may well be in an NFL training camp considering how poor this QB class is suppose to be and how many NFL teams clearly are in need of a QB.

awful lot of chiming in on a Michigan football blog about the football team at Ohio State.  Get over it, shit happens here so we should hardly be acting holier than thou.

Some of you old dudes are acting like this doesn't happen all over, or has never happened before.  Newsflash!  This is has been going on for decades, there just wasn't the Internet back in 1940 so you never heard about it.

...sticking financial penalties on an amateur athlete is ridiculous. Suspend him or kick him off the team or suspend him from the university...but design a financial punishment for a non-salaried team mate?

Urban should've just stuck with a one game penalty (which is fair), and kept his opinions to himself about Winston.
