Kirk Herbstreit comment on GameDay
I heard Kirk Herbstreit, refer to the University of Michigan as the "wolves" on GameDay last weekend. For the life of me I have never referred or heard anyone refer to the wolverines as the "wolves." I know this guy is a egomaniac, but has anyone ever heard the wolverines referred to as "wolves"?

I've heard it before, but only from people who aren't in the circle.
Kind of like the people who refer to Michigan as "Big Blue."

Herbie must have picked it up.

Or 'The Blue'. Didn't know who they were referring to.
October 14th, 2015 at 9:08 AM ^
I have never, ever heard anyone refer to Michigan as The Blue... you are just making that up. Come on, just admit it.
October 14th, 2015 at 9:16 AM ^
Nope. It was my wife's aunt. I called her on it, she said it was said on a movie... I wish I was making it up because it's that bad, but it happened.
October 14th, 2015 at 9:21 AM ^
but I do like your avatar - have a nice day.
October 14th, 2015 at 9:54 AM ^
Maybe that IS his Aunt. That would be kind of creepy, but I'm down with that.
October 14th, 2015 at 9:56 AM ^
then I reserve the right to like her
October 14th, 2015 at 10:00 AM ^
...unless that is her in Joe's profile picture.
October 14th, 2015 at 10:31 AM ^
Ha! Not even close. Ya'll don't want to meet her, trust me.

Out of MI, I hear it all the time. "HOW BOUT YOUR "BIG BLUE" THIS WEEKEND?" or "THE BLUE REALLY TOOK IT TO BYU, HUH?"

October 14th, 2015 at 9:47 AM ^
I have a very distinct memory of Ralph Williams walking into class one day and quoting the end of a poem that seems appropriate here:
"I am haunted: the blue, the blue, the blue."
(A little Googling shows this as "The Azure" by Stephane Mallarme")
Thus ends my most random post ever.
October 14th, 2015 at 9:51 AM ^
I remember the line because I'd never heard Michigan referred to as "the Blue" before and I thought it was strange.
October 14th, 2015 at 10:09 AM ^
Thanks for this. I was about to call BS on Hunterjoe because, "yeah, right. Which movie was your Aunt talking about?!?" I would say I'll have to go back and watch The Big Chill, but I really won't.
October 14th, 2015 at 10:28 AM ^
The Big Chill was directed by Michigan alum Lawrence Kasdan. Its IMDB page states: "The characters were based on people Lawrence Kasdan lived with in the Eugene V. Debs co-op in Ann Arbor, MI, while attending the University of Michigan. Co-ops are co-ed housing in which the residents share household duties like cooking. This explains why the characters are so comfortable sharing the house and cooking, and are so attached to the Michigan football game."
so, for that mistake to be in that movie with that director is surprising. I'd bet it was a fumble/ ad lib by the actors.
October 14th, 2015 at 12:42 PM ^
That's the one... The Big Chill. I've never seen it.

What about Les Bleus?
October 14th, 2015 at 9:55 AM ^
Geaux Blue?
October 14th, 2015 at 9:36 AM ^
Isn't it obvious? They have mistaken us for the French National Soccer team. Le Blue!
Viva Le Blue!
October 14th, 2015 at 10:18 AM ^
I think you mean, Les Bleus, making us "The Blues".

Same here, also from a former player from the '60s. Maybe it was a Bump thing?
October 14th, 2015 at 9:03 AM ^
call UM Big Blue once?
Also, I've heard UM called the wolves quite a few times by media type folk. Didn't bother me so I didn't think to mark down the time, date, weather, moon phase, etc.
October 14th, 2015 at 9:39 AM ^
I don't like "big blue" either. I was surprised to see Fitz Touissant tweet that the other day, though. I wonder if the players use it regularly?
October 14th, 2015 at 9:41 AM ^
neither "Big Blue" nor "wolves" bother me at all. In fact Big blue sounds kinda cool, even if it's not accurate.
October 14th, 2015 at 9:47 AM ^
To me, when people say "Big Blue" I get the feeling they are out of state bandwagon fans.

the saying Forza Azzuri!
I've been told that means, Go Blue, in Italiano.
At least, that's what she was saying.....alot.

How in the world people confuse the University of Michigan with the University of Kentucky continues to baffle me.

Yeah, as soon as I hear "Big Blue," I just stop listening as what ever is to follow has no merrit.

UM-Dearborn used to be the Wolves, but alas even they are the Wolverines now
October 14th, 2015 at 12:29 PM ^
Does that mean I'm a real wolverine now??
I know a sparty that likes to give me shit about graduating from UM-Dearborn. This is a sparty that went to art college and wound up working at a hardware store.

just tell him that the Dearborn campus takes in students with the same median ACT scores as MSU but those students then get to use campus research and library facilities in Ann Arbor for a fraction of the cost of attending Staeeee and see if he still feels like a genius.

Easily my least hated osu alum. He's pretty damn good at coming off unbiased. In fact, a lot of osu fans hate him because of that, which makes me like him even more.

Poor guy got run out of town for not being a big enough homer while speaking about the team he undoubtably loves in a professional tone with a level head. Ya know, like a real analyst.... which is quite unlike Robert Smith who should be fired immediately.
I used to work with a guy that went to Upper Arlington high school in Columbus, where a lot of OSU alums settle after college. He played for their football team and was part of a large group of guys with connections to the Buckeye program. He had a few too many beers one evening after work and started running his mouth about how part of the reason Kirk left town had to do with some buddies of his harrassing Herbstreit's wife. Multiple times. Great bunch of fans...
Oh, how I hate Ohio State.

Agreed...I've not really heard anything bad about him. Spencer interviewed him right before last season and seems like a pretty decent guy.
