Rudock Hate
I'm and old MGoBlogger. I'm still an advocate for Haloscan. I loved the WLA and posted a few things there. I think RR was a great hire that just didn't pan out. When I graduated from college this blog switched to Drupal and it was harder to post, the community changed and I found myself with a job that kept me too busy to post. This blog is great, the community is too. There's posters that aren't amazing and have horrible opinions but it's so much better than when I was here and we just handle-jacked each other all day. It's been a rough 8 year for those of us who are still around and I remember watching UM football as a person old enough to think "this isn't what I watched as a kid". I'm 30 years old now. And I watch Rudock and think "this is so nice....he doesn't lose every game". I read Bacon's book and everyone of Devin Gardner's stat lines included two picks. I loved Devin and think he was such a great player who just was in the right place at the wrong time. But Rudock is so much less talented and so much more solid than he is.
Please stop saying "if he could throw a deep ball we'd be a top 10 team".
Please stop saying "if we had a real QB we could be Ohio State"
Please stop forgetting that most people thought 8-4 was a good season this year.
This team has performed exactly as expected. Rudock may have more picks than expected but those are mainly from the first game and that was just a better team. He and this team will be good, not great. I'm excited too but let's not act like this team are defending national champs returning 22 starters. They are basically what everyone expected. 2-1 with a winnable game against a good BYU team. They've improved and have a chance to be competitve against everyone they play.
Hate Rudock if you want but don't act like it's been better around here the past 7 years.

They were our qb's the last several years. It could've and would've been worse without them.

He put up some great performances and numbers during his career. Pretty good for a guy who's not talented.

I don't think we are mediocre or will be. Rudock might be our achilles heel, playing decently in some games, but making mistakes in others. But with improvement everywhere else, I think Harbaugh will figure out how to work around the deficits. I think we'll fare well in most games - not win them all but I don't think we'll break down like we did last year. We'll play competently.

That's too strong an emotion. It's more like frustration, as in, "why can't we have nice things?"
Also, it's highly unlikely Michigan gets to 8-4 with this level of QB play. It'll be 8-9 in the box all season.

My sense is he just needs to settle down with his timing. He's never going to be a world beater but if he can get the timing/accuracy down a little better big plays are there for the taking. For now every defense we face is going to be loading up against the run and receivers are getting open.

Rebels scored 30 at northern illinois. The Ohio state scored 13 on offense against northern illinois...at home. You figure it out.

He's not good. At all. I don't think anyone actually hates Jake, but he has not been good. Like others have mentioned, he was expected to be a game manager and not make mistakes. He looks VERY mistake-prone so far this season.
I'm just going to sit back and trust Harbaugh, but I have been very unimpressed with Rudock thus far.

Might be good enough to win the B1G? Absolutely not.
He can't throw a pass over 10 yards. The run game is good but when MSU and OSU (who already have great defensive fronts) stack the box he's going to have to be on point, which he hasn't been all year.
I hope he turns it around but he has been awful. Like I said before though, I'll just let Harbaugh do his thing.

Aside from the strawman about some groundswell of folks thinking this is a top 10 team with a good QB, is the narrative that being 30 gives a lot more historial perspective than the newbies now who didn't go through the Horror. But if you were 35 you'd remember actual good MICH teams, if you were 45 you'd remember national champion MICH teams, and if you were 65 you'd remember years of domination and top 10 teams.
Your perspective on what is "good" and "refreshing" is only one, and there's a not so subtle subtext that you think you're wiser and more reasonable than the other posters here for it. I dare say that there are others with plenty of more longstanding fandom bona fides who disagree.
September 20th, 2015 at 12:30 AM ^
Wiser? No. More reasonable. Yes.
That's not a stretch with some of the posters though. My only point is that most Michigan football I can remember is not great so why we're all so upset over a win is beyond me. The last 7 years has been rough and I don't understand why a 21 point win has some people so pissed at a mediocre QB who we thought would be mediocre.
Also, I remember the last national championship but I'd have to be 65 years old to have been born for the previous title. So maybe I wasn't around for the Championship level teams but I was around for the last championship.
But you don't sound like an old snob at all.

I don't hate, but this was a very salty game for me. My thing is that we could have gotten that performance out of Gardner and I expect improvement.

the kid has 5 picks in 3 games. what he did last year AT ANOTHER SCHOOL has nothing to do with this year.

The UM WRs absolutely stink and not a single one would make OSU's travel team. You knew there was going to be problems when the biggest hype to come out of fall camp was Grant Perry. A fricking three-star recruit with no major offers was the hope at the receiver position for UM.

I trust in Harbaugh, along with trusting in Drevno and Fisch. They have seen all the QB's. They have made the call that Ruddock is the best option available. And it has been clear that they think he is CLEARLY better than Morris or Speight. Next year, with Morris, Speight, Korn, and Peters, we will see some incredible competition. This year, Harbaugh has done the best he can with the options available. If you recall, Harbaugh didn't offer Ruddock immediately . . . he did so after seeing what was here in the cupboard.
I also think there is NOTHING like game time to get timing and routes down a lot better. I guess I'm a glass half full kind of guy, but when I look at the passes that have been missed, you can see the potential, and what will happen once the timing and the accuracy are improved a bit.
As I look at the schedule, I think that Michigan has three more games (BYU, Maryland, and Northwestern) with which to work on accuracy and routes and timing. I hope that time is used well, so that Michigan can at least compete against MSU.

Have to sift through 20 BS posts to find one sane one. Well said Stephen
September 20th, 2015 at 12:41 AM ^
So Morris is a bust. Ruddock is a serviceable QB that is being used to buy the program some time until one of the other guys develops. Trust the staff and let this play out. Stop hating on the kid. He just got here.

Devin Gardner behind this line and we would be a much better team than we are with Rudock. Gardner made plays when they needed to be made. He made some real dumb decisions but he won us A LOT of games. We also should have beaten a talented SC team if our defense didn't turn into pudding those last few minutes. He also kept us in games vs two far superior OSU teams. His work in the 2013 OSU game was insane. I mean let's not forget the guy has passing records here. A lot of my worrying is my own fault. Jake Rudock was never that good to begin with. Many Iowa fans said that but I ignored it and figured he'd be rock solid for us. Not great, but good. But these past 3 games have given no indication he'll be any good. The only special moment he had was that pass to Butt vs Utah for a td. This team as it stands will be a lot like Wisconsin has been since Wilson left. Good defense and a mediocre at very best QB. The difference is they had some of the best running teams in the country, we don't. Sorry for babbling on and I'll accept all the negs that are likely to come my way but this is frustrating. UNLV is dreadful. Any top 75 team should maul them.

I mean, I did hope Rudock would be better than he has been so far, but this is still last year's team +1 year. And while we are not a great team, the upgrade in coaching has already produced much better performances than we would have gotten with the same roster and the old staff.
Rome wasn't built in a day, so to speak.
