I could see Michigan trying to pull this off for Midnight Madness, but I mean, it's October/November and it's still football season AND it's likely cold as all heck.
And it's basketball, you can't sit a million miles a way and have a good seat. If you put the court at midfield everyone would be using binoculars to see.

Fun fact: The first Olympic basketball tournament (1936) was held on outdoor tennis courts.
The first "Final Two" was played at Northwestern.
They later tore the gym down.
And that's as close as they've ever been to being in the tournament.
And at that point in time, the NIT was actually the far more prestigous tournament.
The next big event Manchester-Madrid soccer, Big Chill, Winter Classic etc. I believe will be a Lions regular season game at the big house.
