Jack Miller to forego 5th year

Per Sam Webb twitter. Puts some context to his 'gut feeling' about Kugler.

Best of luck Jack Miller in your future. Big oppurtunity for Kugler or Glasgow to nail down the C spot. Do you think this had to do with injury or Harbaugh not promising him his starting spot back?

very obscure Fiddler on the Roof reference that I only know about because Dad played that 8-track on a continuous loop on one of our road trips to California. That's not exactly true, we rotated among Fiddler on the Roof, Chorus Line, and John Denver & the Muppets' Christmas Album.

Wow, this is surprising. Iirc he was one of the players at the JH press conference and was expected to be a team leader this year. Best of luck to him!

How often do players forego 5th years vs coaches asking them not to return? And of those times, how often do the coaches talk them out of that decision?

This is common practice. He was passed on the depth chart, and no coach is going to give a guy a 5th year unless he's a starter. This is good for Jack too, so he can actually figure out what he wants to do next.

Please explain to me how he was passed on the depth chart? I have ready every single bit of content coming out of both major pay sites and this site over hte past 3 weeks and have not heard a whisper of Jack getting passed. To me, this seems like he was sick of football and quit. No addition by subtraction bull shit. No bad fit etc.

Haha, you are right that our players are not slaves. However, let's be real here. If he were going to actually just quit, he wouldn't have even started Spring Practice. He was at the Harbaugh press conference. It's not like Center is a tough position to tell who the best guy will be.

Minus your guesses being educated, you're right. Center is the second most important position on offense. The center has many responsibilities such as blitz pickups, pass protection adjustments, pointing out defensive alignment, etc.

I have no knowledge of why Jack left, but if, as you posit, he was "sick of football and quit," then this is indeed addition by subtraction.  One of the issues that I have found over the past 7 years, and certainly over the past 2, was that our teams appeared to lack drive and quit down the stretch.  (No, not every player on the team, as there were plenty of Jake Ryan, Denard, V. Smith, Odoms, Gallon types, as well).  Our team has certainly lacked an identity and a certain fire of late.

Now, I am not saying that Jack was in any way responsible for, or a part of, that problem, but if he has become sick of football and quit, then it is probably best for all parties if he moves on with his degree.  Aside from the technical aspects, I think that wthe best asset that Harbaugh will instill in this team is a level of intensity that we have not seen in ages.  Those who don't want to put in the work, who are sick of football, or who do not fit with that mentality, for whatever reason, probably shouldn't stick around, as it will be unpleasant for them and could be a detriment to the team.
