OTish: Your sports fan pet peeves?
Was thinking about this topic listening to the radio yesterday. This applies to all sports and sports fans.
my no.1 is up and down guy. The guy in your row (usually at pro sports where alcohol is served) that gets up and down a minimum of 10 times a game to go refill and take a leak. Cannot stand it.

People in the front row at hockey games who bang on the glass as if that does anything.

Or a super hairy back if you're sitting behind him.

Mine is the huge advantage that warm weather bowl games give to teams that play in warm weather, often near the bowl stadiums.
Tied with this is the national media, who, when they take note of the phenomenon, act like it "might" be an advantage or it "may" work against a team. Of course it's a huge advantage, of course it's unfair, just admit it already.
February 12th, 2015 at 2:27 PM ^
But I detest when people refer to the team by the coach's name, e.g. "The Fighting Harbaughs" "The Fighting Sabans"
Rece Davis on ESPN does this constantly and it drives me batty.

Two come to mind. People who don't know what they're talking about talking like they know what they're talking about. Eg, me (knowing next to nothing about soccer) saying "Man City always chokes" after they give up a goal.
The other is the inevitable column about how the team that just won a championship--no matter the sport--is set up for years to come as a dynasty. Happens after every goddam championship--no matter the team, pro or college, etc. I swear, there's one standard article that is just repurposed with fill-in the blanks for names.

Next you might as well tell me you think Mo Vaughn deserved the MVP over Albert Belle.

Thought of another one, and I'm a little hesitent to say this because the sentiment about it seems evenly split, but the maize in Michigan's uniforms being highlighter yellow!!! It seems to be trending back to a darker maize this past season, but for the longest time, this was my #1 sporting pet peeve.
February 12th, 2015 at 5:29 PM ^
I like bright yellow (not neon, but bright...) Sets us apart from all the "gold" teams (Iowa, Cal, WVU, Minny, USC...)

That guy that sits in the north endzone at yells "tackle" at the top of his lungs every play. You know who you are you douchebag.
February 12th, 2015 at 4:29 PM ^
Guy behind me yells "run" every time a RB gets the ball.
Thanks, I'm sure the RB didn't think of that.
February 12th, 2015 at 5:36 PM ^
That's why I stay home and watch. So I can yell "Run!" at the running back and you won't have to hear me. True.

the worst is when someone is behind you explaing to his child what is going on in the game and ends up talking through the entire game, giving a play by play on how he would of ran that play differently. FRUSTRATING!
February 12th, 2015 at 4:43 PM ^
I hate the guy or gal who sits within earshot and talks the entire game about everything not pertinent to the game itself. Usually business types talking about the job.
February 12th, 2015 at 3:06 PM ^
The holier-than-thou objective guy. "No, the ref got it right. It was a good call." STFU!

This. Fans booing a correct call is worse than objectivity guy. He's basically saying the rules don't apply to his team and is getting upset at refs for correctly doing their job.
I can deal with objectivity guy if it's not every call, and if he's actually correct.

Is there a Denard exception? Because there should be.
February 12th, 2015 at 3:19 PM ^
Angry fans who yell insults at players when they don't make a play, as if the player is letting that fan down intentionally. Those kinds of fans seem to think they're the only ones at the game.
February 12th, 2015 at 3:23 PM ^
Note: the following rant does not apply to pro sports. I don't care what people do at pro sporting events.
I get pissed at people who negatively attack the other team, with stupid chants like "You suck," "Overrated," and other crap. The exception to this is the FYS reaction at that MSU hockey game when what's-his-name got feloniously assaulted by those two Sparty thugs. Negative "cheering" makes one look like an immature little spoiled tool. Drives me nuts. Stick to rooting for your own team and ignore the other team's antics.

Another big pet peeve of mine is how the sports of golf and tennis make the fans be quiet. WTF?!?! It's not any harder to play those sports than it is to play any other, but they'll insist that the fans who paid to watch be silent while they're playing? This to me is the height of snobbery, arrogance, and condescension. Yes, I know the country-club etymology of those two sports. Still, it doesn't make it right. Seems anachronistic and absurd.
February 12th, 2015 at 6:17 PM ^
I can't speak on golf, but serving in tennis requires quite a bit of concentration, and the serve is extremely important in controlling a match. People are allowed to cheer after the point ends. Additionally, it would be a bit strange for fans to cheer throughout a tennis set because the game is inherently individualistic (except doubles), and fans are supposed to show respect to each competitor. This all speculative, but from watching tennis, the fan seems more like a spectator enjoying the duel between players, rather than an active agent indirectly trying to impact the outcome of the match through disrupting an opponent or energizing their favorite. However, favoritism happens in the major tournaments, especially the French Open. Just my perspective. I wouldn't call it snobbish.
February 12th, 2015 at 9:01 PM ^
It's totally snobbish. There are so many sporting skills that require the same, if not more, concentration. The current tradition and expectation to have to be quiet is a manifestation of the bourgoisie who primarily popularized these sports who could at the time deign to tell others how to behave. Golfers have their butlers carry their bags, FFS! That tradtion and expectation has carried over to the present day . . . and it blows. I love to play both these games, but the culture surrounding the sport is a silly holdover from a long gone era, and thus a pet peeve of mine.
[For those about to chime in about how golf and/or tennis was invented by working class folk, my point is about how the sport got popularized, not invented.]
February 12th, 2015 at 8:35 PM ^
It's tradition and expectations. In football and basketball everyone knows you're supposed to be loud. In tennis everyone knows you're supposed to be silent. So if you're the asshole that yells something when a guy's about to serve, you deserve to get yelled at. It has nothing to do with snobbery.
Also, serves take concentration. A lot of stuff goes into a good one.
February 12th, 2015 at 8:50 PM ^
I’m not disputing that it’s tradition and expectation. In fact, that's precisely my point. I’m saying that it SHOULD no longer be the expectation and the tradition is anchronistic and absurd. Hitting a 85 mph curve-ball takes skill and concentration; catching a football when someone is determined to keep you from doing so takes skill and concentration; stopping a frozen piece of rubber traveling 100 mph takes skill and concentration; making a free-throw with a championship on the line takes skill and concentration. No one is demanding the crowd be silent. These, and many others, require more skill and concentration than a tennis serve or a golf drive, IMO. Golf and tennis need to get over itself. Pussies if they can't handle the crowd. Tradition or not.
