Texas QB Commit Zach Gentry visiting this weekend
This is a HUGE deal to get Zach Gentry on campus this weekend. Kid has been a Texas commit for awhile, and even with Alabama trying to get him, still stayed true to his Texas commit.
Four star qb Zach gentry visiting Mich this weekend. More to come at the http://t.co/DFiyzz48Tw

Really reminds me of a poor mans Andrew Luck. Stature, mobility, and arm strength.
With JH's coaching he could be our next first round Qb.

a mountain man's Andrew Luck. 6'7, are you kidding me?
January 22nd, 2015 at 2:34 PM ^
He's the Albuquerque Terrell Pryor.

The rule under Harbaugh will be competition.
I like it. Hopefully it translates not only to recruits at the same position, but also starz vs. performance.
Count me in.
January 22nd, 2015 at 1:48 PM ^
Welllllll, the kids, you know, compete every day. The expectation is for the position and they will compete in practice."
I'm guessing is won't be anything like that...

Murray is a great athlete with limited size, but is pretty much a top 30 player and composite 5-star on 247. He's currently committed to aTm, but is visiting Texas and there are rumors that he will make that switch.
This seems like a backup plan for Gentry in the event Murray ends up at Texas. So look to Murray to be the first domino one way or the other.
January 22nd, 2015 at 10:37 AM ^
Perhaps a consensus 5-star top 30 player in not just a backup plan for Texas.
Who knows which visit might have influenced the other. I agree with you, if Murray were to flip to Texas, it would seem that might nudge Gentry in our direction. Let's hope that both of them love their upcoming visits!

I haven't read or seen much to indicate that this is a "backup plan" for Gentry. Not to mention, it doesn't seem like Harbaugh would go after a guy that would avoid competition like that.
January 22nd, 2015 at 12:43 PM ^
There is avoiding competition and doing what is smart for your future. Murray is currently a significantly better athlete (he could be a really good CB/WR recruit) and a better thrower than Gantry is, against significantly better high school competition. Gantry is much more of a project as well.
I know we're all aboard the Harbaugh train, but that doesn't mean that there aren't other factors involved. It would be very, very unlikely for Gentry to beat out Murray. He may also not like the fact that Texas is so interested in having Murray join the class, and may feel a bit slighted that it is happening at this point (this is different than being swooned by a coach that already has a QB in the fold). None of that means Gentry is afraid of competition per se, but he may simply be interested in going where he feels he has a better chance to see the field. Harbaugh and Michigan would be a good option to do just that.
I'm not saying that Gentry is looking around only because of Murray. I'm not saying Gentry isn't legit interested in what Harbaugh and Michigan has to offer. But it's certainly another aspect of this story and one that seems like it probably isn't just a coincidence in timing.
FWIW, here's Murray's highlight if you wish to look at it

about a minute in, Murray makes a throw from the 40 and leads his receiver into the goal post at full speed... that must have left a mark!
January 22nd, 2015 at 1:16 PM ^
Doesn't Murray's father run some kind of QB training academy?
January 22nd, 2015 at 2:55 PM ^
If Murray is out there available, why are we not recruiting HIM ?
January 22nd, 2015 at 4:21 PM ^
My thoughts exactly!
January 22nd, 2015 at 4:34 PM ^
Never visited, probably doesn't want to come up here, so it's likely just not worth the time for a 1 and a million chance.
But yeah, watching his film, it's a bit of a shame he won't be a Michigan player. He looks pretty damn good.

Real question is "is it facebook official" ?
January 22nd, 2015 at 11:41 AM ^
Per 24/7: It's also noteworthy that Gentry has removed his "Committed to Texas" line from his Twitter bio as well, as he's been committed to the Longhorns since last May
January 22nd, 2015 at 12:34 PM ^
but decided he wouldn't have time with his newfound priorities as a Michigan quarterback!

To keep from getting let down this year I keep focusing on how much JH will be able to do with a full recruiting cycle...

He's coming to Michigan.
And Texas will get Kyler Murray so I think they will take this trade off.

Seems so random that Murray all of a sudden wants to go to Texas
January 22nd, 2015 at 10:36 AM ^
I hope he commits, is excellent and that Malzone is even better. Gotta root for the kid who's been (as the kids say) "keepin' it 100" throughout the entire process.
January 22nd, 2015 at 12:14 PM ^
Happy to have more than 1 QB and solid competition, but Malzone has been Blue for ever.
January 22nd, 2015 at 10:41 AM ^
After the 2027 game in Austin all the longhorn players will say "I remember exactly where I was in elementary school when Zach Gentry flipped to Michigan and I have used that moment for inspiration ever since."
January 22nd, 2015 at 10:41 AM ^
Getting him here on campus is a big deal.
The way I look at it, with a lot of these top recruits, what's most important right now isn't necessarily getting them to commit, but getting them on campus, getting them talking about Michigan, and seeing what Harbaugh has to offer. That trickles down to every subsequent class. We could still very likely end up with a lot of 3* guys this year, and that's fine, but a lot of recruiting is taking the time to build up the relationships now. You probably receive little in the way of immediate benefits, but you reap long-term rewards.
Especially if the on-field play improves.
January 22nd, 2015 at 11:13 AM ^
Eh, I tend to think that getting them to commit right now is the most important thing, what with Signing Day two weeks away.

This is big. I am really impressed with this kid and think his combination of mobility + accuracy separates him from our other QBs. Obviously, he's tall but I don't think that's the most important factor. His mobility seems to fit the Luck/Kaepernick mold. I'd be thrilled to have him join the class.
