Harbaugh gets in contact with 2016 4* QB
Another late night recruiting thread!
Harbaugh talked to KJ Costello, one of the 2016 class' most highly touted quarterbacks. Costello was interested in UM when Hoke was coaching and according to 247 visited campus last summer. Steve Lorenz expects him to visit again soon, and he's likely to bring along his 4* WR, Dylan Crawford.

Costello's 2014 film:

He has offers from everyone, and it looks like Harbaugh will be recruiting two QBs per class like he did at Stanford (Messiah deWeaver is our currently committed 2016 QB for those who forgot).

I would love to see another 'Cali quarterback" in Ann Arbor. There's one from San Mateo who is doing a pretty good job in the NFL right now.

We need a center named Abbott.

A receiver named Hu.

He seems a shoe-in for the #1 jersey, no?

Beat me to the post! Good job both above!

I will assume Crawford is #5 in the video.
From my admittedly untrained eye it looks like the competition Costello et al. are facing is about as good as it gets.
edit: According to Rivals Costello's high school has produced fifteen recruits 3* or better since 2001, so they are indeed a power.
January 20th, 2015 at 3:28 AM ^
That is not Crawford in the video. Dylan Crawford played at St. Francis in La Canada for his junior season. He just recently transferred to RSM to enroll early and to play his senior year with Costello.
#5 in the video is Kyle Sweet, who is a 2015 prospect committed to WSU.

RSM is some what a feeder school to USC. Their most notable alum is Carson Palmer.

Coach Harbaugh's approach to QB recruiting. Competition, competition, competition! Incoming QB recruits are going to be coming in knowing that they have to earn their playing time and that nothing is guaranteed. You will be rewarded when your hard work and preparation results in you being the best QB on the team.
The end result for the Michigan team means we never again will see a situation like we did at Nebraska a few seasons ago when Denard got hurt and we were woefully unprepared at the QB spot. Or like this past season when Devin Gardner struggled. Bringing in 2 QB's each year (like he did while at Stanford) is going to bring a quick end to the QB depth chart problem we've seen at Michigan over the last few seasons.
January 20th, 2015 at 1:15 AM ^
I've questioned for years why teams dont take 2 QBs every OTHER class. It will lead to transfers but its the most important position in sport and if you stuck with a mediocre one its almost impossible to win big. Now Jim probably takes it a bit to an extreme taking 2 almost every class as having 7-8 on your roster at once is a bit over the top but I'd rather have too many than not enough. And you are not going to get the types who want to be "gifted" a position that's for sure.
I will be interested to see if DeWeaver remains a Wolverine as well. People assume so but if Jim lands 2 QBs in 2016 he likes more he might not be.
January 20th, 2015 at 2:31 AM ^
deWeaver is quite good in his own right, and he fits Harbaugh's QB-type in terms of being pass-first but also mobile. And I know Harbaugh has been in contact with him. He'll more than likely be in the class.
January 20th, 2015 at 11:36 AM ^
I'd guess that Harbaugh assumes that if he takes 2 QB's every class, there will be attrition/transfers at that position especially. But at the same time, I'm with you - it's good to have competition. You hopefully never find yourself in a position where you're starting QB is your starter because there aren't any other viable alternatives on the roster.

If Hoke got 5 stars, Harbaugh needs to snag 6-ers.

If only we had a WR named Abbott in 2016, it could get funny out there.

Not to be confused with MSU weird guy Costello.
January 20th, 2015 at 1:21 AM ^
I'd probably have 5 qbs on roster max. 8 is a little extreme. /i'd put most of my scholarships to OL or DL because trench play is very important and suffers quite a bit of injuries.
January 20th, 2015 at 1:34 AM ^
Lorenz made an error in the story saying Harbaugh recruited 2 every class. It was 7 in 4 years. But yes it is extreme. 8 would be 10% of your scholarships. Every other year is 6 which works for me; I'd expect 2 to transfer over time.
Fun fact - Taysom Hill of BYU was recruited by Jim. Due to his Mormon mission Jim will actually be facing a QB he recruited to Stanford. I dont think almost anyone is aware of this. :)
January 20th, 2015 at 2:40 AM ^
Closer to 9%. But if you figure on 2 transfers every few years and it's closer to 7%. If you count 22 starters(sorry kickers) than each position is 4.5% and I'd say qb is easily worth double the investment.
I agree with it. Similar to SEC crootin' without the dishonesty and cutting. They will know the competition they will be signing up for. You figure most qb's desire playing time and will transfer to FCS schools or other FBS schools if they don't make the cut.

He was originally scheduled to stay till Wednesday. Recruits have 48 hours from the time they arrive to interact with the coaches, so for all intents and purposes his visit will be done tomorrow evening.
January 20th, 2015 at 3:24 AM ^
cant wait for mich to become a qb factory.. 2 qb recruits per class, they all compete and the ones that lose can transfer.
January 20th, 2015 at 4:27 AM ^
and it started back then with Jim Harbaugh himself in the 80's. Lasted thru Chad Henne some 20 years later, but he's the last Michigan QB to move on the the NFL and continue to play that position.
In a different way, as Head Coach, it's likely again that Harbaugh restarts the "factory" and Michigan returns to producing some NFL-quality QB's.

Sittin’ and Thinkin’ while Watching The Detectives here and at Scout, Rivals and 24/7 Talking In The Dark about Jim Harbaugh being a Man Out Of Time to complete Michigan’s 2015 football recruiting class, it might not be Too Far Gone or Beyond Belief that Inch By Inch, in Tiny Steps, Michigan’s coaching staff knows that It’s Time to convince some high school football players who are Almost Blue that, if they come to Michigan, they can become Big Boys among the Sunday’s Best in the NFL. The Great Unknown is whether any of those prospects will decide to Pump It Up with the other members of Michigan’s football recruiting classes of 2015 and 2016.

Harbaugh's staff is getting in touch with all these guys, but it's weeks before signing day. Tough to change your mind so quick even if you are really interested

While it may be difficult to make up ground with the 2015s, he's not so concerned that they're his only focus.
