Sam Webb: Michigan Targeting a Committed B1G QB

Submitted by KennyGfanLMAO on

In the most recent MGoVideo, Sam Webb reported that Michigan is looking for another quarterback for this class and is targeting a quarterback who is already commited to another B1G school. He said the player "doesn't want his name out there yet, but Michigan is all over him, and the player is certainly reciprocating the interest."

I figured since it has been a slow day so far on the blog, we could speculate on which quarterback Harbaugh and company are going after. One of the higher rated QB's committed to a B1G school is OSU commit, Torrance Gibson. Any chance he is the mystery player?

Discussion time!

after the hype wore off. His passing numbers were the result of an unstoppable rushing attack. He missed some easy throws and was helped out by Devin Smith being a beast on deep throws.

Of course it only takes one team to believe the hype though.

If Cardale had gone his future would have road 100% on the combine.

Good combine = Goes high.

Bad combine = Drops low.

Nothing else would have mattered because 3 games wouldn't be enough to overcome a bad combine (as opposed to being a starter 2-3 years). Good combine would have just reinforced the hype.

A medicore combine would have likely trended to low.

He would only participate in the things was good at...

For example, go there, go lift and throw an 80 yard pass and then save the rest for his pro day.

Agents make their guys do it all the time.

It wouldn't help him like it would for him to come in and destroy the combine, but it would be a safe move to stay in that 2-3 round range and not fall like he would if he had an awful combine.

Harbaugh’s record with QBs is undeniably excellent.  After a long NFL career as a QB, he was the Oakland Raiders’ QB coach from 2002-2003, where he helped to turn Rich Gannon into the NFL MVP and the Raiders got to a Super Bowl.  He spent the next three years as head coach of the University of San Diego and molded an NFL QB (Josh Johnson) at a school that produces very little NFL talent.  From there he went to Stanford and turned Andrew Luck into one of the best college QBs of his generation.  Then his most recent stop was with the 49ers, where he turned Alex Smith’s career around (for the better), before making something of a very young and raw Colin Kaepernick.  Kaepernick sucked last year, but Harbaugh’s record with QBs is stellar.

You look at what he has done with Luck, Kap, and Alex Smith... three different yet successful QBs for three successful offenses. Smith was a huge bust until Harbaugh came into town, Kaepernick was considered a huge reach and a project when they drafted him, and while Luck was a well regarded recruit, he wasn't some consensus 5 star true freshman starter who was projected as a three year player. They may not all have set passing records, but all three have had loads of success with varying quality of their offensive lines and mostly below average receivers (save arguably the WRs for Luck's current season with the Colts).

Giving Harbaugh credit for Luck is like giving Carr credit for Brady or Manning's Tennessee coach fo him. Kaepernick has regressed each year since he was unleashed on an unsuspecting league. Alex Smith was benched by Harbaugh, and is basically the same mediocre QB in KC as he was in SF. I'll give you (well you three, guy above) Gannon, because his few Oakland years were the only time he was actually good. Like I said, Harbaugh is a great head coach, digging deeper it seems like his QB record is overblown. He deserves far more credit for being a great head coach.

For every luck, there are can't miss players who never realize their talent. 5 star guys like Mitch Mustain, Ryan Perrilloux, Fred Rouse, John Brantley, Darrell Scott, Bryce Brown, Russell Sheppard, Kyle Prater, and Dayne Crist fail to make any significant contributions to college football, whereas others have failed to live up to expectations. You taking away credit for a little recruited Andrew Lucks development is assinine and ignorant.

1) Luck has not won anything yet. Please do not begin to compare him to two of the greatest QBs of all time until he has played at least 6-8 seasons.

2) Harbaugh deserves more than 10% credit for Andrew Luck. You even said it yourself,

"But 4 stars is 4 stars. He was the 4th rated QB in the class."

Yes, the fourth. Not the first. 4 stars, not 5. Which means that even though some analysts thought he was good, no one thought he was going to be the number one overall pick or as Mel Kiper once said of him, "...the safest draft pick I've seen since Peyton Manning." Luck deserves some credit for that, but he absolutely did not get there all by himself. Not even close.

3) I'll give you a partial on Kaepernick. He has indeed regressed, but he is regressing from a partial year of starting to a full year of starting to a year of injuries and organizational dysfuntion. He also took his team to a 3 point Super Bowl loss and an NFC championship appearance. I'm hesitant to write him off as a failure.

4) Alex Smith was a complete bust until Harbaugh saved his career. Seriously, go look at his stats, I'll wait. He had a 51:53 TD to INT ratio and was 19-31. Since Harbaugh? 71:23, 38-16-1. Throw out the win-loss if you want, he's still a MUCH better QB since Harbaugh coached him. Also, Alex Smith is NOT the problem with Kansas City. Not by a long shot.

5) I don't think you are a troll. Just felt the need to toss this in here cause of a later comment someone made.

I would say fixing Alex Smith gives Harbaugh a better claim to being a QB guru than recruiting & developing Andrew Luck. Pretty much everyone is in agreement that Luck would've turned out to be great anyway, but EVERYONE is in agreement that Alex was just about washed out of the league before the 49ers hired JH...

and then there's beating Pete Carroll's juggernaut 47 pt favorite Trojans with 0 star Tavita Pritchard at QB. That didn't suck... THAT'S Harbaugh's deal!!!

True, but do these kids simply not care about being successful in the NFL?  I mean dear God, look at the list of OSU QBs drafted since 1936:

Don Scott, Dave Leggett, John Borton, Frank Kremblas, Rex Kern, Ron Maciejowski, Greg Hare, Cornelius Greene, Art Schlichter, Mike Tomczak, Jim Karsatos, Tom Tupa, Kent Graham, Bobby Hoying, Joe Germain, Steve Bellisari, Craig Krenzel, Troy Smith.

That is pure poop.

If I'm a high school QB who's trying to get to the NFL, I don't give a damn about OSU's pre-Meyer track record with NFL QBs.  I care a lot about Meyer's record and the record of his coordinators.  I mean, if a 2015 QB avoids Michigan because Rodriguez QBs are better in college than the NFL, that would be damn stupid.  That kid should be reading up on Harbaugh's record at USD and Stanford, along with what he's done in the NFL.
