Should FSU Have Been in the 4 Team Playoff?

Submitted by East German Judge on

Seeing how FSU got crushed by Oregon, did the Committee make a mistake by having FSU in the 4 team playoff?  They won so many games this year by the skin of their teeth, but were they the 3rd best?  Would a Oregon vs. TCU game been closer?

Don't forget that the 2012 undefeated Notre Dame team was in the BCS Championship Game and got crushed also.  Does undefeated = best team?

Sure.  Undefeated defending champion.  Just because they got housed by Oregon doesn't mean they didn't deserve a chance.  And yes, they were a very lucky/uneven undefeated team, but the ACC has looked okay this bowl season and it's not like Baylor covered themselves in glory today either.  Oregon was clicking and FSU had a terrible game; you play it again and the outcome probably isn't different, but it would absolutely be closer.

Without a 4 team playoff the championship game would've been FSU and Alabama... End of story. So not only does Oregon get to flex its muscle against FSU... But they were given a chance to play for a championship.

I also thought this FSU team really reminded me of that 2012 ND team that seemed to win every game by the skin of their teeth. And although both were pretty obviously going to get demolished, FSU had to get let in. Undefeated season don't lie

Yes - running the table in a major conference should guarantee you a spot. IMHO, if a school is in a power five conference then the weak schedule should only come into account in measuring the merit of a one-loss team, as running the table is a significant feat.

Dumb question. Should the reigning national champs who just went undefeated have been included in the 4 team playoff? Yes. Yes they should have. That' the beauty of the playoff. Last year they would've been in the national championship game, even though they clearly werent the best team. The playoff separates the deserving from the hyped.

I think it's a toss up, yes they went undefeated but then they go and lay and egg on national TV. I still think they deserved to get in because hindsight is 20/20 and they were defending champs.

Doesn't matter if TCU would have been closer. FSU was undefeated in a power 5 conference. Of course they should have been in the playoff

Stupid question. Dumb, dumb, dumb. They got it right. By running the table in a Power 5, they WON the right to be there.  Now, I had many doubts about whether or not they were one of the top four teams. But I blame the Big 12 and those Baylor & TCU schedulers. And even then, it would have bumped OSU, not FSU.

I think they clearly deserved to be in the game, but there's no question they play a weak schedule in a poor conference. They didn't look ready to handle real competition. Now if they had to deal with 1 or 2 games against legit competition they'd have been in much better shape to win that game.

If FSU had lost one game, they wouldn't have been in final four. Too many close games that they could have easily lost. They were undefeated though, from a power 5 conference, and were Defending National Champions. Having said that, while watching Oregon throttle FSU, I was thinking TCU would have given them a great game.

They were 13-0 going in and this game was close for 30 minutes before FSU started turning it over like crazy.   If they'd taken care of the ball this game could have been very different - they moved the ball otherwise.

FSU is more an indictment of the 4 team system.

How could you keep FSU out?
-Defending National Champion
-Back to Back ACC Champion
-Hadn't lost a game since the 2012 season
-Only undefeated team in the 2014 regular season
-Only undefeated team in the 2013 season
-Last years Heisman winner

I would prefer to see a 6 team playoff so every major conference champion has a chance of making it in.  The regular season would still be meaningful as it is difficult to finish in the top 6 and more importantly the top 2 teams get a 1st round bye giving great importance to finishing in the top 2.

Imagine this system:

(1) Alabama vs the winner of (4) Ohio State - (5) Baylor

vs

(2) Oregon vs the winner of (3) FSU - (6) TCU

6 teams in, isn't letting in any obvious weak links.  Every major conference champion gets a chance to finish in the final 6 and make the playoffs.  Regular season still has strong meaning, especially to get a first round bye.

In pre-playoff days, we'd have had Alabama-FSU as the national championship game with Oregon and OSU meeting in the Rose Bowl. If the current Alabama-OSU score holds, Oregon-OSU will be the real national championship game. The 4-team playoff is just so much better than what we had before that it's hard to believe.

But yeah, bigger will be better, and we'll get there.

...but they were:

  •  #11 in Massey Power
  • #16 in Sagarin Predictor
  • #15 in S&P+
  • #4 in FEI (that's a surprise to me)

I don't think any team with power rankings that low has been in the national championship conversation on New Years Day since SMU in 1982. I'd have made them double-digit underdogs to any of the other three.

No obviously undefeated does not equal best...BUT you ABSOLUTELY CANNOT leave an undefeated power 5 team out of the playoff...or else what's the point of all of this?

Georgia Tech (beat MissSt 49-34) and Clemson (beat Oklahoma 40-6) don't look so marginal now.

FSU was staying within reach in a track meet until they turned it over 5 times upon which Oregon scored 34 points in the ensuing drives (including a scoop-and-score for FG range).
