Afternoon NFL Thread
Couple of games of note this afternoon. Lions fans have to wait a few hours for their game, but there are still a lot of interesting matchups around the country.
1:00 games on tv here in Ann Arbor are Green Bay vs. Buffalo and Miami vs New England
I think the Lions will rattle off another win today, but the Packers will too.
Rooting interests suggest Lions fans need to root for Miami.
Happy Sunday everyone!

New England blocks a Miami FG attempt and returns it for a TD.

If they were at the Browns game, they could have pulled off a "Cleveland Steamer."

Three INTs in one half....geebus.
Luckily one was overturned because of an off sides penalty.

If you're not watching the game, you see the stats and assume Manziel isn't playing well, I can tell you...it's much, much worse than anything you're imagining.

I've been watching football for about 50 years, and I'm not prone to hyperbole.
This is the worst NFL performance I've ever seen, and it isn't close. He gets happy feet immediately, starts running around in circles in the pocket, then throws high and late over the middle (and those are the successful plays).
I hear people comparing it to RG3--I guess because they both run--but Griffin has an arm. To get enough velocity to even have a chance of completing something downfield Manziel has to be sprinting towards the LOS. I don't know how anyone can think this could possibly work.

This is the worst NFL performance I've ever seen
That said, Ryan Leaf going 1-for-15 for 4 yards, two interceptions, and three fumbles has to be the absolute bottom.

It was a common refrain from scouts and draft pundits--there was a whole lot of "adequate" and "just average" and "maybe good enough" in describing his arm strength. He has to hurl his entire body into the throw, which means he has to have a clean pocket or be on the move. He had a clean pocket every throw on his pro day; he won't have that luxury on the field.
I was already worried about it coming in, but it's a bigger problem than I thought. Every throw from the pocket today was floated--the only balls with any zip he'd gotten out of the pocket and was running forward when he threw.

I am not much of a Johny Football fan.
Have they pulled him from the game yet? Watching Tom. Trying really hard not to root for the dolphins.

It's just incredible to me that teams continue to use a prevent defense in two-minute drill situations. It gives up points every single time.

I'm sure he's going to be a bust. Can't believe the Browns used a 1st round pick on him
December 14th, 2014 at 3:07 PM ^
Lots of young, mobile QBs do that when they start off; I suspect he'll figure out how to be more effective with more experience. That said, I think he is a bit more of a system QB than people are willing to admit/thought when he came out of college, and I kinda doubt he'll ever be the star-type QB you expect with a first-round selection.
December 14th, 2014 at 3:31 PM ^
...the problem is arm strength.
If he just needed to learn to stay in the pocket, that'd be one thing. But he doesn't have the arm to stand in the pocket and deliver a ball downfield. If he doesn't have the extra juice from running towards the receiver the ball takes forever to get there and in the NFL that means there's a good chance it's getting picked.
I don't see how that's ever going to change.

Wonder how Mariotta will do next year. I am guessing that facing a defense will be a shock. Currently he can hit his number 1 almost every play. I hope whichever team gets him gives him some time to develop.
