Ross And Schlissel Meet....Ross Will Not Interfere With AD Decision

So far, at least. Still time to get a Goodbye: Dave Brandon though...

Invest in AA Torch and Pitchfork today because it will be too late by tomorrow. Big things are coming.
October 27th, 2014 at 2:44 PM ^
I think that the AATP stock has already had its run. The movement started by the activity at AATP is probably complete and now its just a matter of the powers that be sorting out the details.
Now I might be a little short sighted if the Monday following The Game comes and goes with DB still in charge. Then AATP will need to open early and hire some additional help.
October 27th, 2014 at 3:07 PM ^
What I'm saying is that there is more fuel that will be added to the fire tomorrow. Additional news, if you will. I'm predicting DB doesn't make it to The Game.
October 27th, 2014 at 4:24 PM ^
Buy now, there is nothing but upside. When we hire a new AD who no one likes who then hires a coach no one likes, AATP is going through the roof.

Would have been, if I hadn't just gotten a bottle of Lagavulin 16.

Michigan's biggest private donor just gave the Schlissel the green light to sack Dave Brandon!
"Ding Dong! The Witch is dead!

"Ding Dong! The Wicked Witch is dead!"

Actually, I think Brandon is more like the Wizard of Oz.
Lots of noise and bright lights and bluster, but when you pull back the curtain, there's really nothing there.

I've been waiting for this news article for so long, it doesn't seem real!
Change is a' comin' to AA!!!
Yeehaw!
October 27th, 2014 at 2:11 PM ^
It's frustrating that this was even a question.
October 27th, 2014 at 2:15 PM ^
This was my reaction, too, but the article has a quote from Ross in which Ross claims that he doesn't think alumni like him should be running universities. If the tone of his comments had been "I'd interfere with the firing if I wanted Brandon to stay, but I'm okay with the firing," then I'd have been pissed. Who knows what he actually believes - and what he does behind closed doors - but his statement that this is Schlissel's decision and he'll stay out of the way is the right one.

This is the best example of a saying that would be stale if it were about anyone else: "The writing is on the wall."
October 27th, 2014 at 3:33 PM ^
The writing has been on the wall for some time.
My question is, can Dave Brandon read that writing? I'm willing to play the role of Daniel if Dave Brandon requires an interpreter.

Still think we are 3 weeks away from a DB firing though.
October 27th, 2014 at 2:29 PM ^
And really, three weeks would be fine. I'm sure that the AD candidates know who they are, have lists of which coaches they'd pursue if hired, and might even have done some of their own backchannel work, too. I mean, if you're one of the guys on the list and can credibly say, "Hey, dream coach is coming to Ann Arbor if you hire me," then that seriously strengthens your candidacy. So I don't think we're falling behind by not having the new AD in place yet. Plus, with respect to timing, we learned from the Miles thing in 2007 that staying under the radar can be helpful. It wouldn't help Michigan's chances right now to have weekly denials of interest from the Harbaughs, Mullen, Miles, etc., since the potential "liar!" accusations would just make it harder for them to come or uglier if they do. If this process speeds up with an AD firing and coach firing in the next couple of weeks, those questions for other coaches will pick up, and fast.
Then again, I'm in the camp who thinks it's 99.9% certain that Brandon is gone, so I'm not too worried that a delay means he might stay. I think Schlissel is just trying to get the timing and the details right.
October 27th, 2014 at 4:29 PM ^
This. There is not going to be a public decision until a new AD is in place.
October 27th, 2014 at 4:48 PM ^
Harvey Perlman first fired Nebraska AD Steve Pederson on the Monday following an October 13th home loss to Oklahoma State (45-14).
Tom Osborne was announced as interim (eventually permanent AD) on Tuesday.
Osborne then waited until the day after the final regular season game to fire Bill Callahan.
Bo Pelini was introduced as the head coach the day after LSU played in the SEC championship game (but remained Miles' DC until after the National Championship game).
October 27th, 2014 at 2:33 PM ^
I hate saying that someone should be fired, but Brandon has fucked this up so badly that there's no other choice.
As far as waiting three more weeks, why? If you're going to fire him, firing him yesterday would've been better than waiting another day. What do you accomplish by waiting three more weeks?
The sooner we move on from Dave Brandon, the sooner we can begin looking for a new coach.
October 27th, 2014 at 2:12 PM ^
Would Schlissel even ask that if he wasn't set on making a change?
October 27th, 2014 at 2:26 PM ^
This is great news and it probably means Schlissel already has the approval from Ross for a replacement candidate.
October 27th, 2014 at 2:28 PM ^
better to ask forgiveness than permission.
October 27th, 2014 at 2:46 PM ^
I'm betting it was more of a feeling out process than asking for permission.
Couple things -
1. If Schlissel asked the question, he already was planning on firing DB.
2. Schlissel's probably smart enough to not ask that question unless he knows he's going to get the answer he wants.
3. Plan your DB firing parties now. It's a coming.
October 27th, 2014 at 2:13 PM ^
Okay that is 100% in support of termination (or standing in its way).
Let's get this process moving.....
October 27th, 2014 at 3:47 PM ^
Questioning his love for the school and his word is uncalled for. He has put his money where his mouth is, and that money made buildings.
October 27th, 2014 at 4:07 PM ^
"I won't interfere" actually means that Schlissel had to ask his permission. Otherwise there'd have been no need for a meeting in the first place, and no need to make such a statement.
This university is not unusual; most college administrators will rush to pucker up to kiss the rear ends of the big donors.
They're all pompous intellectuals until the donor's pants come down!

"Ross said that Brandon shouldn’t shoulder the blame for the woes of the football program, which is 3-5 this season after a 35-11 loss at rival Michigan State on Saturday. “There’s a lot more to the job than winning football games,” Ross said. “That’s the coach’s responsibility.”
True. But who was the manager responsible for qualifying and hiring Brady Hoke in the first place?
Exactly.
Dude, you can't let your golfing buddy and pen pal off that easily.

we have to ask permission of the billionaires.

October 27th, 2014 at 2:20 PM ^
I think that the university and Ross will make a deal with the head coach. We won't interfere with you getting Jim Harbaugh at Miami if you help us get Les Miles or John Harbaugh.
October 27th, 2014 at 2:34 PM ^
to hire Harbaugh may certainly be a complicating factor. But all else is speculation.
October 27th, 2014 at 2:54 PM ^
Mr. Ross' history and generosity disagree with you:

October 27th, 2014 at 3:36 PM ^
I've never understood why people think he would come here unless he was fired by the Ravens. And that is highly unlikely.
And Ross does not need to make any deals to lure Jim away from Michigan. I don't think he wants to come back to college.
October 27th, 2014 at 3:53 PM ^
I seem to remember that Ross first ok'd his first run at Harbaugh through the athletic department, as to prevent interference on Michigan getting his first head coaching target.
http://www.michigandaily.com/content/report-ross-approaches-michigan-pu…
This may be no more a blessing than Schlissel running this by Ross, but the two instititions (the Miami Dolphins and UM) appear to have open communication about each others intentions.
October 27th, 2014 at 2:22 PM ^
Ross was in town to quietly share that he will underwrite buy-outs and other expenses arising from a clean sweep of Fort Schembechler. Schlissel may also trust Ross' judgment how to manage hiring/firing/transition. It's not as if Schlissel, who is beyond his ken, has some other perceived reliable advisor in this respect.

$2 million for Hoke and $3 million for Brandon. Not sure about the coordinators, but Bacon stated yesterday that Nussmeier has a contract that allows him to leave at any time.
