"Harbaugh wouldn't even listen...." Sorry, but this just seems like such an easy claim to make without anything to substantiate it. I'm not accusing Bacon of making it up--I do believe he has sources for this, but how credible are they? We have no way of knowing. Harbaugh seems like a stretch anyway, no matter who the AD is.

I'm not sure you understand what Bacon is doing, so let me spell out the logic for you:
Jim H will answer the phone if any AD at Michigan calls about the head coaching position. If I could draw on a whiteboard, there would be a large circle with Michigan AD in it.
Jim H will answer the phone if a new AD calls him. If I could draw on a whiteboard, there would be a small circle that says new AD inside the larger circle that says Michigan AD.
If you can't see that this guy has no information outside of what everyone else has, then you are blind. The guy is being very careful with the statements he makes, so as to garner as much support as possible for axing DB.
People with just as much knowledge, if not more, have stated that the best chance at getting Jim H for next year requires keeping DB. And it makes sense, not only for timing reasons, but because one thing DB has shown is that he will actually spend money.
Everyone here wants to go back to the old way of Michigan football. No branding, etc. Well, guess what comes with branding? A lot of money to spend on a new football coach. And guess what, Schlissel may very likely love nothing more than for football to be an afterthought to academics. You could easily infer that, just like Bacon has inferred every piece of "inside knowledge" he spews.

So now we have Brandon and Hoke, a metaphorical and a literal great white whale.

All this white whale talk reminds me of The Scofflaw episode from Seinfeld. Newman was just too elusive for that cop.

I resent so many folks talking about white whales. Whales come in a lot of other colors too.

This over focus on the "Michigan Man" thing mystifies me - why do people still obsess about this completely irrelevant thought? That ship not only left the harbour it is across the damn ocean by now. Talk about S&C, talk about lack of development hell talk about injuries - it is so over about the "Michigan Man" concept. Whoever comes in and develops this program will BE the Michigan Man.
October 26th, 2014 at 10:59 AM ^
It's not completely irrelevant. Being a Michigan Man historically should be seen as a potential negative, a potential red flag. We should hire someone in spite of him being a Michigan Man (if he has those ties). We need to get rid of that sort of institutional narcissism. But your last sentence nails it.
October 26th, 2014 at 11:46 AM ^
No. A "Michigan Man" historically has been defined as someone who exemplifies the values this institution stands for - integrity, a commitment to success both on the field and in the classroom, fair play, and good personal conduct. If this has come to be a negative, we really have lost our way.
It has nothing to do with your past job history. John Beilein is undoubtedly a Michigan Man.
October 26th, 2014 at 11:58 AM ^
Come on man. I am clearly not referring to an ideal historical definition of 'Michigan Man.' I am clearly talking about how the concept has currently shaped the institution of Michigan football ('institutional narcissism'). I said nothing about the basketball program. And my agreement with the poster's last sentence about being a Michigan Man when you are hired into the position, such as was the case with Belien, aligns with your attempted argument against what I wrote. Your lack of reading comprehension results in a straw man argument, and masks areas of agreement.

Do I really have to define "potential" for you? Wow.
October 26th, 2014 at 12:03 PM ^
In reality the application has been someone like Brady Hoke who did not deserve the opportunity to coach the football team based on his accomplishments. Yet he was given the job solely based on his ties to Michigan.
It is this incessant need to hire someone with Michigan ties that is changing the meaning. It is not the fans, but the current stewards of the program that are perverting the meaning.

The term "Michigan Man" goes back to Fielding Yost (if not even earlier):
My heart is so full at this moment, I fear I could say little else. But do let me reiterate the Spirit of Michigan. It is based on a deathless loyalty to Michigan and all her ways. An enthusiasm that makes it second nature for Michigan Men to spread the gospel of their university to the world’s distant outposts. And a conviction that nowhere, is there a better university, in any way, than this Michigan of ours.

Bacon obviously has an axe to grind with DB. So it's really hard to know how to read him.
Basically you have two ways:
1) JUB is in full payback mode and is spinning everything to make it seem like DB's exit is best for the program.
2) DB is actually the huge douche that JUB makes him out to be and JUB is pretty much right on.
Based on all the bull**** that Brandon has done/said over the past few years, I tend to believe it's #2. I wasn't fully on-board with this position until the 1AM press-release on Morris and the alleged strong-arming of the medical staff to say Morris didn't have a concussion. That was the final straw for me.
But there is no question that JUB is a heavily biased source.

Since that didn't happen I would have liked the press release issued at a time when it didn't look blatantly sketchy. So yea, waiting 6 hours would have made it look a lot better.

David Brandon is the worst thing to EVER happen to Michigan football. He needs to be gone five years ago.

If the Medical staff was being strong armed into saying something that wasn't true, why haven't they spoken up? Why, when two days later Brandon publicly stated that the medical staff was entirely to blame for the Morris issue, didn't the medical staff speak up?
Those are some smart guys there, there is no reason they should fear for their jobs if they were to publicly contradict Brandon after he had publicly thrown them under the bus. If the medical staff agreed to statements that are untrue they need to speak up and set the record straight. Of course so long as the public perception is...... yeah, I can understand why they're remaining silent.
October 26th, 2014 at 1:43 PM ^
They WOULDN'T let Brandon strong-arm them into saying something that wasn't true. That is why it took till 1 freakin' AM in the morning to put together what should have been a PR 101 press-release. The docs wouldn't roll over and let the AD claim Morris wasn't concussed.
Brian reported the story after talking directly with sources involved in creating the press release.. i know your have your mouth sewn directly onto Dave Brandon's anus so choose to believe whatever your want.
