I admire your passion, but be careful for what you wish for. Go ahead and protest if it makes you feel better. If DB gets replaced, how can you be sure his replacement satisfies all or some of students' desires?
October 5th, 2014 at 4:19 PM ^
This. Because last time I checked athletic airector's do not get their job's in a general election by the studen body.
October 5th, 2014 at 4:11 PM ^
Totally support this initiative.
If we shut up now, it will appear as though DB "handled" this latest crisis with his statement and Thursday PR campaign.
We need to be absolutely certain Dave Brandon is no longer AD, as soon as possible. The longer he is here, the less time the new AD will have to prepare for hiring our next Football Coach.

I think there will be a lot of white-colored clothing in the stands Saturday. That in itself will be a statement to the U-M powers that be.
If I were a U-M fan and had tickets, I'd definitely be going and cheering on my favorite team. Times are rough but the players are definitely giving their best (it was a strong effort last night given the circumstances) ----- as long as they do not quit (and they have not), they deserve support.

Considering Brandon's feelings are hurt, I think that would fall under "abusive."

Boy are they going to look stupid when they miss Norfleet's kickoff return. Hands down the most exciting 20 yards in football.
October 5th, 2014 at 5:04 PM ^
If the students don't show up for the opening kick, he'll return the opening kick 108 yards for a TD. No one will believe it happened

The point has been made ad nauseum that Michigan fans aren't "entitled" to a winning team. I agree, but I'd just add that, in the same way, the players aren't "entitled" to a full house of paying customers who love them unconditionally.
I'd never go after the character of a student athlete, or anything like that. But this protest is fine. I support them, and my primary issues aren't with them - if they choose to interpret stuff like this as a personal insult, then that's on them. I know that this athletic department wants us to sit down, shut up, hand over our wallets and cheer during blowout losses, and if you want to be one of those people, more power to you. But don't whine at people who make other choices and pull out of the "support the team!!!!!!!!!!!" thing. I support the program and the players - my taking some sort of petty action to get them a better coach and AD may not make a difference, but neither will sitting there and apeing Brady's clapping after shitty plays because I want to be a "true fan."
October 5th, 2014 at 4:44 PM ^
Hey, guys, I don't think U of M's administration knows that fans are upset. Let's stop showing up for games so we can show support for our teams! That's the ticket!
October 5th, 2014 at 5:43 PM ^
I know you think you're being clever and sarcastic, but what evidence has the administration shown that they know fans are upset? Until they make a change, I don't think it's unreasonable to continue to make statements showing displeasure with the direction of the program.
Also, the players and team aren't entitled to some kind of unflinching, blindingly loyal support - they are not the sole reason that people go to games. Fans go to games to support them, true, but also to support the program and to have fun cheering on our team. Those two things aren't happening, so why should we force ourselves to go to games? Because a small vocal group of people attack others for not being "true" fans?
Not to mention, protesting in hopes of producing meaningful, long term change could also be viewed as support of the team and program. There's more than one way to show support.

that would spell "Fire Brandon" by those in the designated letter seats wearing blue and those in the designated background seats wearing maize.

I agree, under Dave Brandon this is no longer michigan. it is michigan sponsored by Chobani.
October 5th, 2014 at 5:16 PM ^
I am skeptical of the impact this will have, as students are already late (or not showing up at all) to the games.
October 5th, 2014 at 5:16 PM ^
God forbid we don't be fair to the players who say the fans are irrelevant and that wins are nothing but statistics....
October 5th, 2014 at 5:22 PM ^
they didn't notice

To be fair Penn State people are pretty delusional.
October 5th, 2014 at 5:49 PM ^
We can't really control what PSU does. We can control what we do.
October 5th, 2014 at 6:46 PM ^
I really dont get your logic. If Michigan holds boycots for things of lessor importance than what happened at PSU, doesnt that say we are less tolerant of institutional mismanagement?
ANother thing - people attempt to make coparisions to PSU for way to many reasons. PSU was an engregious case of institutionalized sexual abuse. I think that's not very comparable to our situation, and many others.
October 6th, 2014 at 5:27 AM ^
The PSU comment was to point out that things I think were worse was happening there. The students there instead of boycotting the department they supported the student athletes. I'm not trying to draw comparisons to the incidents.
There has to be a better way of addressing the issue. The national media may not put a good spin on it. Not to mention what the players, recruits, and potential AD and coach might think.

"The PSU comment was to point out that things I think were worse was happening there. The students there instead of boycotting the department they supported the student athletes. I'm not trying to draw comparisons to the incidents."
Please. Those same students are agitating for Father Joe to get all his wins back. Yes, they may have shown the country their passion for their diseased program, but they have also shown their pure, batshit insanity, lack of a moral compass, and readiness to participate in mass delusion that involves choosing a few convenient scapegoats and pretending no one else is guilty. Fuck all of their fans and spare me anything that links the two fanbases. Hoke may suck, but that's not in the ballpark of allowing all that child rape and molestation to go on.

I can drink a few more beers til I get to my seat.
October 5th, 2014 at 5:31 PM ^
This is excellent and reminds me of the kind of activism that used to happen in a bygone era. I think it would be even more productive to boycott the entire first quarter just to make sure that it gets all over the national media.
October 5th, 2014 at 5:50 PM ^
It's up to the students to do what they think is right. I don't know how much good it will do. Given the profit margins (and given that's what the AD seems to care about, profits) I thought a concessions boycott would have been effective but someone else here pointed out that it's only 2.5% of the revenue. Seems like it would have been higher with the insane markups.

I am boycotting the entire game. I think that's the most effective thing. And I want Brandon gone as much as anyone.
The only thing I want to say is that this shouldn't be an ad hominem attack on Brandon or his "Michigan-ness." Brandon is Michigan; despite his many failings, he is devoted to the University and has given much.
He should go because he's not very good at his job. Not because he isn't Michigan and somehow we are.
October 5th, 2014 at 7:18 PM ^
if we start campaigning now and making the seeds of this protest visible amongst the michigan community, we can get in front of the message and everyone in that stadium will know exactly why we aren't there for kickoff - to demonstrate our discontent with brandon's incompetence as athletic director.
October 5th, 2014 at 7:31 PM ^
Why even go to the Penn St game. Just stay home.
Brandon will have security take your signs away......
October 5th, 2014 at 8:05 PM ^
HE IS PROBLEM #1 i understand DB wont fire him and all his other shortcomings, but i think Hoke needs to go, why not boycott hoke too. Afterall, he is the coach and if we were winning this would not be a huge issue..........

October 5th, 2014 at 9:52 PM ^
Unless your intention is to give Brandon cover, this is the wrong approach. The person who already responded to you is trying to save Brandon. Is that your angle?
October 5th, 2014 at 9:20 PM ^
Here is alternative way to stick it to Brandon: don't ever under any circumstances refer to the Penn State game as UTL. It is the Penn State game.
UTL 1? That was the Notre Dame game, etc.
October 5th, 2014 at 9:50 PM ^
It is time for us to put all of our individual agendas and grievances aside, and come together to support our team and our excellent university. Let's all be there early and ready to support our team in full force! If changes are to be made to the HC and AD, we cannot keep spewing toxic waste as a community, and then expect the most talented candidates to want to come here.
October 5th, 2014 at 9:56 PM ^
Instead of boycotting the game...how about boycotting what Dave Brandon is trying to sell...the brand? What if the student section just wore plain blue tshirts or hoodies that do not say Michigan or Michigan Football etc. This way, you are there supporting the players by being present and on time, yet you are making it known that you are agaist this "brand" of Michigan football. If your talking about optics, I think having the whole student section full of students wearing plain blue shirts will have a bigger impact than empty seats....just an idea.
October 5th, 2014 at 10:29 PM ^
This is why I proposed people wear black--so as not to show up on TV for Diamond Dave.
October 5th, 2014 at 10:16 PM ^
I think a full student section loudly cheering our team is another statement we can make. I don't like Brandon but an empty student section doesn't get him fired any faster. Just support the team and use other avenues to get rid of this joker. JMHO
