CC: Why no love for Mike Leach?

Submitted by LJ on

In the discussion of myriad coaching candidates on this board and the main page, there has been nary a mention of Mike Leach.  What gives?  Pros:

  • Awesome, fun to watch offense that throws it 60 times a game and racks up yards by the hundreds
  • Turned a historically mediocre Texas Tech program into a perennial winner in a brutal division
  • Has taken Washington State, maybe the least-advantaged Power 5 school in the country, to a bowl game in year 2, and has come inches away from beating Oregon in year 3 (also outgaining opponents in their other losses)
  • Press conferences would be hilarious
  • Would absolutely take the job

I know there's the whole Adam James concussion thing, but it seems pretty likely that was a witch hunt conducted by a crazy administration.  And we seem to have no problem overlooking shady business when it comes to Gundy or Miles.  What gives?  Is it just the cultural fit thing again?  It seems like he should at least be in the big bag of names being tossed around.

If this is seirous or not. Because if serious, this is absurd, but the tone seems serious so I'm as confused as an athesist's first day of college at Notre Dame's freshmen orientation.

Firing a coach and possibly an AD in large part for issues relating to player safety, and then hiring a coach who was just fired recently for issues relating to player safety... sounds like a plan!

Leach would meet Schlissel for the first time, growl "Arrrrr, Matey!" and give him a tattered old copy of Captain Pissgums and His Pervert Pirates and that would be the end of the interview.

I'm in the minority on this, but I would definitely not want Mike Leach to be our head coach. That is why I'm glad he is at Wazzu, it is literally the furthest point from Ann Arbor he can coach.

I have studied offenses for nearly 20 years and I must admit I love Mike Leach.  I have always wondered what he could do if he landed at a school like Michigan and could recruit nationally against any school.  You've gotta think the results would be pretty epic, especially with him throwing some more runs in there.  I don't think they would even approach Mike, but he's a great coach nonetheless.  I'm hopeful we take a chance on someone like Michigan did with Bo and Lloyd.

I posted this is another thread, but the fact this is what most people think of Leach as it relates to concussions kinda makes him a non-starter in this context.  Also, he's an offense-first, barely-defense second type of guy, and we've already had trouble with those types of guys recently.

Not that we are an upper level program right now.  He is one of those guys who has a life outside of football.  Hunting, fishing flying all over the world to kill things and watch rugby.  He just seems like the kind of coach who could in no way accept the life interuptions that come with a job like M.
