OT- Game of Thrones S04E05: First of His Name
Nice segway from books, I think my favorite epsidode this season
Wait... so how does a motorized, two wheel, personal transportation vehicle have ANYTHING to do with Game of Thrones?
/SEGUE'D
Great episode. Nice to see one of Craster's wives get revenge. GoT has caught a lot of (deserved IMO) flak for the overwhelming rapiness of things lately, so it was nice to see a tiny bit of redemption there.
Lots of weird displays of innocence tonight. Hodor seeing blood on his hands. Robyn being fucked up innocent Robyn. Sansa defending her innocence while Arya spits on hers.
I'll have to re-watch the Cersei/Tywin scenes again. Love the chess game there and with Cersei and Margaery both lying through their teeth.
Why deserved? Do you know who goes into the Watch? The occasional noble, sure, but mostly thieves, murderers and rapists. And when the ones at Craster's keep overthrew their authority, is it any wonder they reverted to type?
This is a brutal world, and it's cable TV. Why should they tell a story that isn't true to its setting?
That's the thing though, everyone knows the setting. I haven't read the books but I understand the whole GoT universe is all rapey and terrible to women. They don't need to remind us at every turn.
"Remind us at every turn."
Are we really reminded that often? They showed us last week, after we had been away from the mutineers for a while, to remind us of their nature. Was there that much "reminding" before? I don't think so. I feel like this is all an over reaction to the Jamie-Cersei scene from a few weeks back. To my recollection, the rape criticism has all occured this season, and all the rapey scenes this year were the Jamie-Cersei scene, and last week at Craster's. Unless I'm forgetting some?
Interesting note: Drogo essentially raped Dany after their wedding in S1 and there was no huge internet outcry or criticisms.
Well, for one there was not the huge following and ratings in the first season that there is now.
Rape is horrible. So is killing children and putting them on posts. So is forced amputation. So is flaying. So is basically everything that happens in this world. Why single out rape? Is it worse to stab someone with a penis than with a sword?
This is how I see things. It's not as if women are singled out for horrific treatment in the world of GoT / ASOIAF. Everyone gets shit on. In fact the series usually comes in for a lot of praise for having strong female characters. And in the books, even though it's a pretty patriarchical world, characters who espouse especially chauvinistic views typically are portrayed as assholes.
Yeah, I don't have a huge issue with that aspect of the show, it's just that I already understand it's a very real part of this world, and I wish they'd use that time moving the plot at this point. I'm not going to not watch because of it, it just doesn't seem to add much to the story.
How did Brand not at least say hi to Jon!!??
Good episode. I had a feeling the Jon/Bran reunion was just going to be a tease.
It was available on HBOGo last night promptly at 9:00. That was how I watched it as it aired.
See my response a little below.
You're a dick. You didn't even apologize, when I (among other posters on this board) relieved you of your ignorance, thereby enabling you to watch the show as it comes on for the back half of Season 4 (and Seaons 5+).
You ingrateful little prick.
I don't feel a need to apologize for something I didn't know, so fuck off.
Pay for it. It's worth it. $60 gets you 3 months of HBO if you already have cable. You can probably find a deal that gets you the first month for free. Plus you'll get cinemax and a bunch of movies.
Worth it.
...says the guy who uses his in-laws ID to watch HBOGO!
I don't understand your point. I use it because HBO is too expensive. They clearly don't care that we use their login.
I suspect that HBO might.
Actually, and oddly, HBO doesn't mind people sharing logins at all. They consider it good marketing.

Interesting. Well then they must have changed it. Last season, I wasn't able to watch the newest episode until the day after it premiered.
Nice try, but last year I watched them the same night too.
Yup. Same here. Guy is a moran.
Yeah, but Hodor botched his lines as usual.
I enjoyed the episode. nice buildup to the final battle...
There is a lot going on here and the directors are managing well...
I was as pumped about the preview for next week as I was this episode: Ramsey battle anyone?
But they love the Targaryen?
Maybe not love but even the Lannister allies don't care for them.
I have a feeling that Dany would be in for quite a brutal shock if she or her advisors truly expect a warm welcome in Westeros. The show has very lightly touched upon this (i.e. Cersei's line about every time a Targaryen is/was born, the gods flipped a coin to determine whether they would be sane or crazy), but the Mad King was not the first psychotic Targaryen ruler. He just lived the longest and happened to piss off all of the wrong houses.
The North still hates the Targaryens for what they did to Ned's father and brother, the former Warden of the North and first heir to the Warden of the North, as Ned was a second son.
The East would most likely rally behind Stannis and the Lords of the Vale, as much of Dragonstone is now for the Baratheons.
The West would rally in favor of the Crown, being Lannister controlled territory. Yeah, they aren't the most popular, but gold wins wars and as long as everyone believes the Lannisters are still absurdly wealthy, they still hold power.
The South would be split. The Tyrells would declare for the king and queen, while Dorne is the wildcard. On one hand, they hate the Lannisters as much as anyone and were loyal to the Targaryens during Robert's Rebellion. On the other hand, if they were offered a seat on the small counsel and, should anything happen to Tommen, Myrcella would become quite valuable as the sole heir to the Iron Throne.
...
And yes, as a book reader I went out of my way to ensure that no future plot details are spoiled/hinted at for this post. This is strictly show stuff, with some history thrown in.
Awesome summation, thanks!
