OT: Badgers move on

Submitted by MgoBlueprint on

We heard the media and Vol fans complain about the calls in our game last night, but Zona has a legitimate beef. Two very similar plays to our game last night. Both went against Zona tonight. Oh yeah, fuck bo ryan

Edit: Im an idiot. I was watching the stream from apple tv. Of course I get the final score while the refs were talking to both coaches. Miller was upset, so I figured they awarded the ball to wisky. The charge was still bs. But the charge and out of bounds were similar to our game last night. Something needs to be done about the block/charge call. It rewards the defender for getting to a spot versus defending.

Agree.  He has made a jump similar to Caris.  People forget but Caris averaged 2 pts a game last year and 10 minutes.  If Caris was 6'11 he'd be scary too like Kaminsky is now.  Read tonight Kaminsky was a PG until he outgrew it which explains his ball skills.

As for your other comment, well UM can do a good job of hurting the one and done model which UK employs best among all.  (Kansas takes care of itself with Self coaching).  If UK wins tomorrow that's a NCAA championship a few years ago and a Final 4 this year so that model will still look very appealing and frankly I don't see it going anywhere barring rule changes since every year there are going to be 10-15 kids who simply want little to do with college other than being forced there by rules.  UK in some ways is like Miami Heat - hard to root for that 'model' even if we were not playing them.

It is sort of nuts that our team with a core of freshmen/sophomores + Morford is going to be the grizzled veteran group out there Sunday.

What you're talking about is the culture of a program, which is built on hard work of individuals. No matter how great a coach, there is nothing like a little peer pressure; seeing your teammates work their asses off is a great motivator. Glad to see we have some of that too, but wow it is hard not to be impressed with Wisky.

That attention to/obsession with fundamentals rubs off on the players, becomes part of the culture of a program.

Eveybody works in the offseason. They play, they shoot. But Kaminski's immaculate footwork around the hoop came from the sort of disciplined, unglamorous work that's the basketball equivalent of piano exercises. You drill your technique until it's perfect and then you drill it some more so it won't break down under duress. You can see who puts in that kind of work and who doesn't, and Wisconsin's program is full of guys that do, and expect it from each other.

Bach wouldn't even give his students a piece of music to play until they'd worked on fingerwork exercises for months. Nobody wants to play through Hanon a thousand times. But that's what it takes.

I am glad Wiscy got in.  I hope all three Big Ten teams get in and Sparty loses to Florida in the Final Four.  I hate ever rooting for Sparty, but three Big Ten teams in the Final Four would make for great politics the next couple of years when it becomes time to pick the field.

I like Michigan's chances against Kentucky and I like their chances against Wiscy if they make it to the FF.

If State beats Uconn, then we'd have to deal with the Izzo has sent all players to the final four line. 2/4 big ten teams in the final four would be more than enough for politics.

They cut to Rece Davis on SC just now....and while all they could do was talk about "controversy" with Michigans win yesterday on a call that was clearer than tonight's....the only thing Rece said about the controversial call was "let's not focus on that and let's talk about how good Wisconsin was tonight". They proceeded to not even bring it up.

And I'm supposed to believe there somehow isn't an anti-Michigan bias everywhere in the media?

Just because you hear snippets here and there does not mean "the media" as a whole is biased one way or another against Michigan. Plenty of media has said the opposite. Your selective analysis is what is in fact biased.

My problem, OP, is with your problem with the charge call. Well, the other stuff, too, but also with the charge call issue.  "Getting to a spot" first _is_ defending. Basketball needs a lot more offensive fouls, not a lot fewer - or at least a lot more non-calls. Or a rule change. I'm sick of jumpshooters kicking their legs out, hitting a defensive guy, and getting a foul call - or similar plays where the shooter goes out of his way to initiate contact and then gets the call. Kaminsky got totally blown apart on one drive in the first half that was called a block that was just like WTF. If those calls were stopped or reversed, the game would be a lot more fun and a lot less frustrating to watch.

I didn't do a good job of articulating the seperate ideas on that. Im not a fan of the charge/ block call period. I really wish they'd let the kids play through it 90% of the time. Refs go with the block call by default, even after the offensive player initiated contact ( pushed off, lowers the shoulder)

I don't care for Arizona basketball. Sean Miller was probably planning to give Rich Rod the game ball again. Anyway, Arizona fans seem to be taking the loss hard. Police had to pepper spray the unruly crowd in Tucson (Link).

That's exactly what the broadcast networks, the NCAA, and the advertisers would hate to see. If it's Florida, UM, MSU, and Wisconsin, the TV ratings in the northeast, Appalachia/middle South, and everywhere west of the Mississippi are going to be disappointing. They're all pissed that AZ lost, since it decreases viewership in the far west for the Final Four.

The ideal lineup at this point for them is FLA, UConn, Kentucky, and Wisconsin.

I would have been more disturbed had he not called the charge when defender was clearly set. I hate those fucking announcers that ask their comrade, "What did you think about that call at that time?" Then they go on to say, "It was clearly the right call, but should it have been made at that point in the game?" To that line of reasoning, I ask how big of an idiot are you? Are you supposed to give a team preferentail treatment because the game is coming to an end and you don't want it to be decided by an official's call? It wasn't. It was an official who had enough balls to call the game the way it's supposed to be, from beginning to end. Never understood the reasoning behind, " the rules are supposed to be merely up to what the fuck the crowd wants or some equally lame ass reason." All games last for a certain amount of time, and the rules generally apply for the entire time except for the rundown clock in the NFL, and probably a few others I'm not thinking about right now. Were we lucky to win? Yeah, probably. Did he  commit a charging foul? No fucking doubt. What further needs to be said?

Even though the thread could be presented a little better, it does announce something that is indeed newsworthy about the tournament and indeed not everyone may know that Wisconsin advanced as yet. As for the prospect of playing Wisconsin, as I believe they would be our Final Four opponent should we take care of business this evening, I would say that it is a manageable matchup since it is definitely more familiar to us. Wisconsin always seems to be one of those teams that you know is beatable but yet you don't want to play them...ever, if you can help it.

So many fans on here hate ryan/Wisconsin? Outside of msu/Osu I root for every big ten team in the tourney. Maybe not iu with crean, but when he gets canned i will go back to rooting for them.

Wisky seems like a model program that does things the right way. I wish them tons of success. As an added bonus, this team doesn't even have a big goofy ginger to root against. On Wisconsin! (Except when you play us)

Here are three reasons I've seen here:

1.  Wisconsin basketball is boring as hell.  The Badgers under Ryan really play a slow game on both ends of the court.  That isn't quite so true this year, but scoring 70 on these guys still seems like a huge deal.

2.  Dirty play.  The specific example I've heard (and seen) involves a Badger defender moving under his guy when he's in the middle of a jump shot (there's probably a term for this, but I don't know or can't recall what it is).  I've seen Wisconsin players do this a lot.  It's uncool and unsafe.  Plus the Badgers will keep doing any number of things repeatedly until refs get worn down and stop making calls.

3.  Ryan is Mr. Crankypants.  Whatever.  He gets a lot out of his players and seems to run a clean program.  Plus he's not a douche like Crean.  In fairness to everyone here, this reason is usually stated tongue-in-cheek.
