Michigan’s Nik Stauskas: Big 10 MVP, 1st-round pick, CANADIAN ICON
I was just looking for some articles on Nik, and came across this...
http://www.thesportsbank.net/michigan-wolverines/nik-stauskas-canada-54…
Not sure who this "thesportsbank" guy is (this Canadian apparently travels with the team), but it seems this guy is even more hyped up about Nik than we are (hard to believe, I know).
Here are some samplings:
Nik Stauskas clinched the Big Ten Player of the Year award last as the Michigan Wolverines crushed the Illinois Fighting Illini 84-53. He’s also likely to be a first round pick in the NBA Draft in June. And he’s a new Canadian basketball icon. Move over Bill Wennington and Steve Nash, there’s a new premier Canuck hoopsters...
Nik Stauskas strikes me not as a rich man’s J.J. Redick, but as a 1-percenter’s J.J. Redick. So that would be an extremely wealthy man’s J.J. Redick. Stauskas is bigger, taller and create his own shot and shots for others much better than Redick can. It took J.J. three years to establish himself in the league, but I bet Nik Stauskas will arrive quicker than that. “Make the leap” so to say.
Man, I love Nik as much as the next guy, but this guy is even making me blush.
Did they name the MVP?
While I appreciate your sentiment...no jinxing!
Nik will likely win something at such an award ceremony, this much I believe.
I have to think there is a decent chance now that Big Ten Player Of The Year goes to Nik Stauskas, last night's performance at Illinois definitely helping matters greatly, I would think.
Indeed, the tracker that Brent Yarina utilizes at BTN has Stauskas in the top spot if the decision were made today. Last week, he had Terran Petteway at the top of the track with Nik at #2.
The comments under Brent's article show some disagreement among other fanbases that Nik should be considered for Big Ten POTY, but whatever. For the last couple weeks in particular, the honor has been Stauskas' to lose, I think, but I would be a little surprised if he did not earn it at this juncture.
There are lots of media figures saying Stauskas will win it (e.g., see below). I think Michigan fans are being their usual pessimists when it comes to his chances—as well as those of Beilein in regard to coach of the year.
Big 12 Player of Year Race still a tough one to call, but Nik Stauskas has wrapped up Big Ten POY. Nick Johnson should be Pac-12 POY.

The only disagreement was from a bunch of Iowa fanboys who think Marble deserves the award because he got to double digits in every BT game.
I think most people would take Stauskas's ridiculous efficiency over double digits in every game on the conference's highest tempo team. Not to say Stauskas is head and shoulders above Marble, but I think he's pretty much wrapped this thing up.
Iowa basketball fans aren'y very knowledgeable. Whenever you watch them on TV they literally boo the whole game. They don't have any idea what fouls are.
"Move over Bill Wennington"
Seriously - is there a big Bill Wennington fan base in Canada? If so - does anybody know why?
There's clearly at least one member on this site.
Not in Canada, not even in Chicago!
Before we disparage part of the 3-headed-monster, let's not forget that Bill Wennington is currently the Bulls radio color analyst, where he does a fine job of being totally corny and somewhat helpful and not at all objective. He often talks about the time when he and Michael Jordan combined for 57 points in MSG (MJ's famous return game)
Anyone who has a MF'n MCDONALDS sandwich named after them surely has a fan base/following:
Beef Wennington – A burger solely offered in the Chicago area in 1998–1999, named after former Chicago Bulls player Bill Wennington. It featured a single patty topped with cheese, onions, barbecue sauce and a slice of Canadian bacon.[31] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_McDonald's_products
Patrick Ewing Eat Your Heart Out
Silly question, really, that's like asking if Chuck Hayes has a big following in the US. Answer is a certain yes.

It's got to be that playoff hockey-esque beard:
*raises hand* Who the hell is Bill Wennington?
It seems that the sportsbank guy took "USA" chants personally. This was pretty sweet...

I don't think he got the "Not Just a Shooter" memo
His Game in 30 Words or Fewer: Shooter. Shooter shooter shooter shooter shooter shooter. His ballhandling has made him a more complete scorer this year, but let’s not kid ourselves. That Wayne song was all about Stauskas.
In the all-time great Canadian atheletes at Michigan?
I'll put him a strong fourth behind:
1. Brendan Morrison
2. Tim Biakabutuka
3. Red Barenson
are we claiming biakabutuka??? i was too young to watch and understand football when he was in AA
Definitely behind the Michael Jordan of Canada - Jevohn Shepherd!
That sportsbank guy is probably Nik's dad.
Brought up Nik unprompted on Hang up and Listen a week or two ago. He's also a fan.
JJ Redick is one of the best college scorers to ever play, not quite sure about that 1%er thing
he was a little more Rex Chapman than Reddick
I like the Klay Thompson comparison on the offensive side of the ball but Klay is an above average on-ball defender at the NBA level.
the latest chad ford mock ($): http://insider.espn.go.com/nba/draft2014/story/_/id/10552402/nba-embiid…
has stauskas at 15. no mention of GRIII or MM.
I thought it was forgone conclusion he's leaving? I think people heard all the "this is the strongest draft ever" narratives at the beggining of the season and tuned out the actual play of a ton of guys who have since fell out of this years draft. This is a top heavy draft with the first 1-6 spots and then "ok" after that point. Nik could be lottery easily with a strong tournament.
I thought the thread title said BACON not ICON. Whoops.
I want Nik to stay
imagine if college football was like college basketball. have one good season and off to the pro's.
this is partly why i can't get into college basketball as much as other fan's. the really good players are not around long enough to enjoy.
