OT: New $78M MSU Football Facility To Be Named The Tom Izzo Football Building
https://michiganstate.rivals.com/news/video-tour-michigan-state-s-new-state-of-the-art-football-building
The Spartans 65,000 square foot facility is currently under construction and will be named the Tom Izzo Football Building.
To me, it says something humorous about the rich football tradition that the building is named after an active basketball coach. At any rate, I thought it was worthy of some off-season mocking.
The link includes a video walkthrough.
One of the bragging points is the "electrified glass" technology. According to director of player relations and program advancement Darien Harris,
"So the glass is gonna light up, illuminate," Harris said. "It's going to be like 'Iron Man.' So you're gonna be able to have an opportunity to actually, virtually suit up and really visualize yourself as a Michigan State Spartan, as a Spartan Dawg."
I look forward to your comments.
The building contains the actual portal players use to enter and leave the program. Sadly, the portal is on the fritz and only the oubound feature is currently operational.
"NEXT!!!"
Proof that they are a basketball school.
It is kind of like having the basketball and hockey facilities named after a football coach.
Some history:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fielding_H._Yost
You don't have to go very far:
In 1921, Yost became Michigan's athletic director and served in that capacity until 1940.
To the point, there's no equivalence here.
State’s AD (and President and Provost and Trustees and…) reports to Izzo
As revolutionary as it was, Yost didn't want the Field House named for himself. Not because he thought it too great an honor, but because he already had grand plans to design the most incredible football stadium in the world, and wanted his name on that. The faculty actually Streisand Effect'd this into being. They figured Yost would move to get the field house named after himself, and moved preemptively to say it should not be. This got the students angry and they moved the regents to name it for Yost.
And Crisler Arena was likewise built during his time as AD. Same for Schembechler Hall, Canham Natatorium, and Weidenbach Hall.
Dude, up your game.
Wow, I was laughing so hard I was nearly crying at some of these posts then...
(Did you hear the sound when you saw the picture?)
Good point, but please don't bring that up.
Apparently, bringing it up has hurt some feelings. Truth does that some times.
Imagine spending $148M dollars on football and all you get is a stadium worth half that.
They'll get some of that money back from their bowl game... they won't be making this year.
Don't they just wait for M-OSU-PSU to make the bowl games to get their Conference dole out?
Once they buy out MeLLLLLLLs contract, they won't be able to afford a actual FB Head Coach, soooooo.......
I'm sure you mean The Mateen Cleaves Director of Football Operations.
He's also on the search committee for the school's president, which is madness.
Cuz he may fire the president!
It says much about Sparty. I'm reminded of when George Perles, who made Izzo look like a scholar, was on the MSU Board of Trustees.
They are a clown show and they think it is just great.
Truth is stranger than fiction - According to Brian Mosallam, a member of Michigan State’s board of trustees, his top option to fill in as the interim was none other than Izzo.
I really thought when reading this, it was a satirical post from The Onion or somewhere else. Looking at the link and reading the story, wow, it’s true. Even MSU hates their football team, so they name it after an iconic basketball coach. Sparty gonna keep Spartying. Yikes.
Major DISRESPEKT for this guy....
Mack Digiornio Football Building has a nice ring to it.
You mean Mork Dingtino
His name is Mike. Get it right, please show some respect.
Mike Dantonio, that is his name.
Mike Danktoenails
I truly believe his official moniker is Mork D-bagtonio 🤣.
Dantonio Dungeon for the disrespektded is next to the Winston Wing honoring MSU athletes who have gone from the jail to the practice field and addition to excellence in assaulting students. Heard it is a good tour.
Maybe an underground tram from the county lockup to the facility?
Better yet, a satellite county jail cell or two, in the basement, and that they don't lock.
Seriously Dantonio is pissed.
He's pissed because the building will house the Mike Hart Big Brother Community Outreach Center.
That line always wrongly attributed as originating with Mike after the game.
Actually, at the presser the Monday before, Dantonio asked:" How long are we going to be the little brother?"
ask Craig Ross.
They did give Dantonio one concession... all the locks in the building are red.
There was a lot of back and forth on this: which one would get his name on the football building, and which would get his name on the new Endowed Chair for Criminal Justice? Lots of good arguments on both sides.
Probably shouldn't be the well endowed Chair then.
Does the building only let weird guys in?
Does it scream and complain all the time?
No tunnels
Quite the opposite- the floorplan suggests that it is made up entirely of tunnels and to change the team motto to "365 days of unnecessary roughness".
Does the old Duffy Daugherty complex still stand? Would it have been too hard to just name it the new Duffy Daugherty Football Complex?
It's complex.
MSU missed their chance to go all in and go with the Mel Tucker Football Building. Has a nice ring to it - for them.
Well that's the only ring that MeLLLLLLL will ever have.
Growing up in Lansing, it was a big deal when the Duffy Daugherty building opened. My high school football team practiced there a few times. I got my first astroturf burn there.
In high school we went to the MSU team wrestling camp that was held in the DD Fieldhouse, pretty dope experience. Rashad Evans was our team's camp counselor, pretty awesome in hindsight. Got my first excruciating tendinitis there!
And yet, Daugherty, came from Michigan's staff.
You're thinking of Duffy's predecessor Biggie Munn.
Duffy coached only at his alma mater Syracuse and at Michigan State.
Munn was a Michigan assistant under Crisler from 1938 to 1945. In '46 he was HC at Syracuse, and Daugherty was one of his assistants. When Munn took the MSU job starting in '47, Duffy moved to EL to be on Munn's staff.
IMHO, Crisler chose the wrong assistant to succeed him—it should have been Munn, not Oosterbaan.
In all fairness, it isn't being named after Tom Izzo because he is their basketball coach, it is being named after Tom Izzo because he bought their library system it's second book: I'd Rather Be Short by Becky Murphy
