1,000th all-time win scenarios
Our beloved football team currently has 989 all time wins.
"One game at a time" and "nothing is certain" caveats apply - but IF we manage to get through the season undefeated our 11th game of the season (and potentially 1,000th win) would be against Maryland. On the road.
If we are 10-1 going into the last regular season game we'd be positioned to play OSU on 11/25 for our 1,000th win. At home.
Eventually, we will get 1,000 wins, but does it matter to you who it is against and where it is played?
So now I'm rooting for 1 loss going into OSU where we will be 10 point favorites
You'd prefer Michigan to go 11-1 over 12-0?
1001 is good, too.
If we win it at Maryland we can unfurl the banner in the band pregame show before the OSU game. That would be pretty sweet and a needle to the OSU fans in the stands.
The one win to match the extra seat in the stadium for Fielding.
It matters. 15-0, baby. Plus, when we're playing OSU they will be talking about the 1000th win all game which will drive the Buckeye fans nuts.
The football gods set this up. Win 1,000 will be in AA 11/25/23.
Expect big things this yr. Going 5-0 on the road is a lot to ask. Beat Ohio. Win the B1G. Go to the playoff at 12-1. I'm good with that.
Rather it be at home vs osu, but not gonna root for a loss to line that up...🤷♂️
I am fine with the 1000th win being Maryland.
Let's get the 1,000th win at MD and then alllllll day vs. OSU we get to brag about it as we beat them for 1,001.
If were are currently at 989 wins then I hope 1000 happens at College Park.
There is something magical about starting on that second thousand…
I’d like to see us get 1,001 in the Big House on 11/25
this answer nicely has the cake and eats it too
I’d never root for Michigan to lose. Ever.
Lets skullfuck Maryland for win #1000, and the win a convincing 1001st win at home the following week.
You know, the funny thing is I actually did root for Michigan to lose once - and it was vs Maryland!
In 2014 we went into Maryland needing a W to become bowl eligible. I feared that they wouldn't can Hoke if we made a bowl, so I did root for Hoke to lose. And he did!
That season was our only Ls to Maryland or rutger since they joined the conference, I believe?
The Silver Lining was all the “It’s Happening” threads!
that was a miserable, cold, misty rain game. we walked back to the car while the sky opened up on us and drenched us. awful game that we deserved to lose but it still hurt.
<whiteboard>JUST WIN ALL THE GAMES!</whiteboard>
EDIT: As a side note we are also only .001 (.1%) behind for all time winning percentage. Going to be tough to get there with Ohio State and Bama ahead of us but could happen this year.
Double Edit: Did the Math quickly so feel free to double check it. Michigan would need to go 15-0, Bama would need 2 losses, and Ohio State would need to go 10-3 or worse.
Michigan: 0.733668
Alabama: 0.733259 (11-2), 0.733457 (12-2)
Ohio State: 0.732963
This is a big reason why I hated the fact that the 2020 (Covid) season was played. UM had a shitty season that year while Bama and OSU both did extremely well.
The inequities in terms of player participation and practice time skewed the results of that season so badly that it absolutely should not count in official records, but alas, it does.
Fair point, but if you go down that road it really calls into question including Michigan's (and anyone else's) pre-WWI (or even pre-1950) results in those numbers.
ESECPN would find a way to change that percentage to put Michigan at 4th or 5th.
I'm just glad UM gets there first. About ten years ago that wasn't a certainty.
Also, it blows that the *uckeyes have the best winning percentage. By my math, there needs to be a three-game swing for UM to take that prize back. So how about ...
1. Beat the snot out of 'em 11/25
2. Beat them again in the playoffs
3. Beat them again 11/30/24 in the toilet bowl
At first I was concerned you wouldn't type the B like the childish neighbors to the south. But then I realized it was an asterisk and you could use an S or an F, etc. Then I was in agreement.
I'm in favor of a 27 game winning streak, plus a National Championship, because that is what it would take for that to happen.
Or, have OSU lose to other teams, too. It's tough to surpass them in win percentage if we're the only one beating them.
Well I wouldn't say Uga beat them per se, but they did lose the game!
Tough but mathematically possible.
Or, have OSU lose to other teams, too.
I was looking at osu schedule and its not as easy as it was last year. With a new QB they open up at Indiana. A few weeks later they're at Notre Dame in a possible revenge game. At Wisconsin, PSU at home, at Purdue.... remember what happened to them there a few years ago?
They only have 6 home games. I can see OSU dropping 2 games before they head to A2.
It was a certainty 10 years ago.
What's changed is - 10 years ago
Wins:
Michigan 903
Texas 867
Nebraska 856
ND 853
Ohio 837
PSU 835
OU 831
Bama 827
Today:
Michigan 989
Bama 953
Ohio 953
ND 938
Texas 936
OU 934
PSU 920
Nebraska 912
(no one else has 900)
People OK with 1 loss are assuming OSU will beat Penn State. If PSU managed to beat OSU and we lost to them on the road, we could find ourselves in second place in the East even with win 1000 against the Buckeyes.
That's not worth it.
And even if Ohio State beats Penn State, if our loss is to Penn State then it's highly unlikely we win the three-way tiebreaker. Ohio State's west division opponents are Purdue, Minnesota, and Wisconsin, and ours are Purdue, Minnesota, and Nebraska. So the only way we can win a three-way tie is if Nebraska has a better conference record than Wisconsin (lol)
There are so many arbitrary stats, championships, wins, losses, records, etc in college football. 1,000 wins isn't really a huge deal to me. Maybe I'm on my own with that take though.
It would be the first time ever though. Will most likely not get to 2000 wins in our lifetime.
No team at the college or professional level has done it. It’s a remarkable achievement that signifies sustained excellence on the field.
It’s a big deal.
Nobody had won 989, 988, 987, etc.. I'd be excited if we were overtaking first, but we've been setting the record with every win for a long time. Not saying I'm against recognizing the milestone, but it would just be a footnote in a win against Maryland, OSU, or whoever for me.
I don't know, it sounds like you're for sure against recognizing the milestone. It is a milestone. That's why win # 999 won't matter like that one will.
You are completely correct, and I agree . . .
You are on your own :)
Undefeated matters.
I am pulling for it to happen at Maryland. Means a better season.
Win all games.
1000th win at Maryland
1001st win at hoMe against those guys.
Also, the #1001 in Roman numerals........ MI
Go Blue!
Ordained before the ages began.
Michigan is a team of destiny, fulfilling ancient Roman prophecies that were so strong that they wrote them into their numbering system.
The marketing team should put up a Roman numeral countdown at Michigan Stadium.
CMXCVIII
CMXCIX
M
MI
Meanwhile, at the Toilet Bowl, they'd have to use pictures of people's fingers and toes.
I am M% behind this happening. Get this commenter in contact with the marketing team, STAT.
I love the idea of them beating osucks for win MI. It would be another painful shot to ohio on top of another year of no gold pants.
I want it to happen as soon as possible, because 1) I want to win every game anyway and 2) I want as large a lead over Bama/OSU/ND as possible.
Win 1000 will happen in College Park vs the Fighting Locksleys.
If we play the season 10x I think we go 11-0 in 80% of those scenarios.
Win the fucking thing at Maryland. Their cute little stadium will be lit in maize and blue.
And Gattis will have a great view of it.
