Low bar in the B1G West, per usual

Still....a home run hire in my opinion....which my wife reminds me doesn't matter
November 26th, 2022 at 10:32 AM ^
Probably will work out better than Hugh Freeze at Auburn.
November 26th, 2022 at 10:58 AM ^
Based on how freeze ended his tenure at his last sec school I predict he'll have his hands full....
November 26th, 2022 at 11:12 AM ^
The only question is will his hands be full of hookers or blow?
November 26th, 2022 at 11:21 AM ^
Answer: Yes
November 26th, 2022 at 11:29 AM ^
if only he had a third hand for the bag of cash. Maybe he'll hire Bobby Petrino to be on his staff.

You gotta give it to Nebraksa, they do make splash hires. Scott Frost was the biggest name in the coaching carousel when they landed him, and it can be similarly said about Matt Rhule as well.
Rhule failed with the Carolina Panthers, but he indisputably built-up Temple in the AAC, and kept Baylor respectable during major sanctions/handicaps. Unsure what his short-comings with the Panthers can be attributed too, but if Nebraska pairs him with an top-tier offensive mind (or retains OC Mark Whipple), it is not the worst recipe. Whipple's offense is notoriously complex for players, and relies on retaining upperclassmen leaders to run it effectively.

Rhule has to bring the heat
Heard Nebraska has been a bit Frosty lately
November 26th, 2022 at 11:58 AM ^
Real cold hawt take.
November 26th, 2022 at 10:43 AM ^
Nebraska has great talent, and Rhule really is a great hire. I expect them to hit the portal, and have some decent recruits come their way. Rhule really is a big name right now and will be a good hire for them. Turned a temple from 2-10 to 10-4 in 3 years, took Baylor from 1-11 to 11-3 in 3.
To be honest, I'm just glad that name is off the board so we don't have to constantly hear Rhule connected to every head job opening in a few weeks.
November 26th, 2022 at 11:09 AM ^
He now has close ties to state of Texas recruiting. That could be important to Nebraska also. When they were really good the pipeline of talent from Texas to Nebraska was key.

Slam dunk for both parties involved. He gets a job at a large program that will love him, they get a competent coach who will right the ship and make them more competitive, and then Penn State will eventually poach him.

I want the Big Ten West (if we keep divisions or not) to be strong. I root for Michigan, the Big Ten, the MAC and then the PAc Ten. I root against ND, the SEC and any Florida school. This is the way.
November 26th, 2022 at 11:11 AM ^
I am of a similar opinion. It makes sense.
November 26th, 2022 at 12:09 PM ^
I'm fine with the West being bad. I don't want to lose in Indy.
But I do think this is a good hire for Nebraska.
November 26th, 2022 at 10:46 AM ^
So ... Nebraska Rhules?
November 26th, 2022 at 11:55 AM ^
Nebraska Rhules (ABC) Sat night 8pm. Starring: Billy Bob Thornton as Matt Rhule, Jesse Plemmons as Scott Frost, and Matt Damon as Trev Alberts. Comedy.
November 26th, 2022 at 12:26 PM ^
I think you could actually pitch this and have a chance of getting it made by one of the networks.
November 26th, 2022 at 10:47 AM ^
Rhule was the popular choice to replace Frames at PSU - at least with the Franklin haters there.
November 26th, 2022 at 10:56 AM ^
Rhule to Nebraska = win/win.
Freeze to Auburn = lose/lose.
November 26th, 2022 at 11:08 AM ^
It'll be interesting to see what Rhule is able to do there. Clearly he's a good coach, but for some reason, it doesn't feel to me like Nebraska hit it out of the park with this hire.
I'd love to see the B1G West become more competitive.
November 26th, 2022 at 11:27 AM ^
This hire doesn’t move the needle for me. I think he’s a decent hire if your ceiling is 8 (maybe even occasionally 9) wins a year and a bowl game, which might be all Nebraska fans want at this point, but I don’t think Rhule gets them back to playing for meaningful championships. He’s not the coach to overcome the lost marginal advantages Nebraska once enjoyed and return them to past glory. IMHO.
November 26th, 2022 at 11:29 AM ^
8-9 wins yearly should be the goal for most programs, including Nebraska. The days of Osborne are long gone.
November 26th, 2022 at 11:50 AM ^
"He’s not the coach to overcome the lost marginal advantages Nebraska once enjoyed and return them to past glory. IMHO."
Outside of Saban and maybe 2-3 others (Smart, Dabo) who is that coach?
November 26th, 2022 at 11:59 AM ^
Agreed, there aren’t that many out there, which is why I think you take a chance and think outside the box. What does Nebraska have to lose at this point? Swing for the fences and see what Primetime can do; take a flier on a young up-and-coming coach who might turn out to be the next Urban Mayer (Jamey Chadwell?). Matt Rhule to me says Nebraska is hoping for mere mediocrity and will remain irrelevant for the foreseeable future.
November 26th, 2022 at 11:27 AM ^
Very good hire. Of course, I thought Frost was a home run too (turns out Huepel was the brains of that offense).
Ruhle is a good coach. Hopefully he can get that program to be competitive again.
November 26th, 2022 at 7:09 PM ^
turns out Huepel was the brains of that offense
I don’t believe Josh Huepel was on Scott Frost’s staff at UCF. Frost was UCF’s HC from 2015-2017, when Huepel was primarily serving as Missouri’s OC.
November 26th, 2022 at 11:29 AM ^
I heard it was an 8 year contract. That's insane. Outside of Nick Saban I don't think there is a coach alive that warrants an 8 year contract.
November 26th, 2022 at 11:32 AM ^
I must admit, I do not follow the coaching carousel closely, but I imagine that this was a pretty big get for who was available or will be available. Proven coach who has turned two programs in the dumpster around quickly, and they seal the deal the day after their season ends so they can get right to work and get the ship pointed forward, without hopefully too many people abandoning ship.
November 26th, 2022 at 11:41 AM ^
I get the desire to stay in coaching and thinking you can win anywhere...but it's going to be tough at Nebraska. Not that they can't become competent to even good but Nebraska doesn't have a ton of recruiting advantages and winning there consistently has been tough for decades.
Still a good hire but Nebraska given what other jobs were open. The fact Rhule picked the Cornhuskers over, say, Auburn (not saying he was in the running but he was a hot coach) says something about something.
November 26th, 2022 at 11:55 AM ^
I'm not sure there's a worse job for general human sanity than Auburn. Boosters run that asylum.
November 26th, 2022 at 12:09 PM ^
Nobody (except the Michigan homers - Desmond and Charles) think this game will be close. Let’s show the boys!
