Favorite Announcer Call from Last Season
Last year’s OSU game had so many great moments and was cathartic for so many of us in the BPONE. I know Gus Johnson gets a lot of hate for his histrionics and hyperbole upon calling a game, but let’s be honest…
When it’s your team losing it sucks, when your team is winning it’s glorious.
For me, the best/most enjoyable announcer call of last year is an absolute no brainer and will live on as an iconic moment in my household for many years to come.
“And Stroud in trouble and Stroud is sacked AGAIN!
O-JA-BO!
David Ojabo!”
As Ojabo sacked stroud and strutted the Lebron walk - was the ultimate call for me. Someone was definitely chopping onions nearby at the time.
A close second, also from The Game, was on Haskins final TD when OSU let him walk in (even though they had already capitulated on his prior TD)
“But remember folks, Hayes, Keegan, Vastardis, Zinter, Stueber - The men up front have been incredible!”
What say you?

O-JA-BO!
Instant classic.

/\This is what I’ll always remember best.

It was our answer to his call of "J... T... BARRETT!!" when we were on the losing end of yet another Ohio State game. That always bugged me.
I was glad to finally have our own version of a Gus name-hype call.

I read your post and then turned on the 30 minute highlight reel on YouTube. Just watched the whole thing.
God that was a good fucking day.
August 24th, 2022 at 8:45 PM ^
“I don’t care about any of that…I just want to beat Ohio State.”
Edit: for anyone who hasn't watched the youtube of the game highlights synced to the radio broadcast, it is well worth a listen! LINK

I came here to post this
August 25th, 2022 at 1:16 PM ^
Dierdorf!
August 24th, 2022 at 8:48 PM ^
I have to say, Gus Johnson's exuberance annoyed me for quite a while, but its warmed up to me a little bit. Granted, it helps when your team is on the positive end of those calls, but I can't help but admire his true passion for the game.
Even though the game was a loss, another favorite of mine was his call on Anthony's 93 TD catch.
Ninety-three-yards-like-THAT!! WOOOO!!!
I know I'm biased, but I can't say I would've reacted any differently if I was making that call too.
August 24th, 2022 at 8:55 PM ^
A lot of people seem to find Gus annoying but I love when he calls games. Football is fun and exciting, I don't want my commentators to sound like we're watching golf. I love the energy, it feels more natural to a football game to me. The players are psyched, the fans are psyched, everyone's yelling and cheering, why would the announcers be any different?
August 24th, 2022 at 9:08 PM ^
Outside of the "World Famous..." line, I like Gus. We complain so much about anti-Michigan bias that I would think people would be more forgiving towards an actual fan of the program.

Andrel Anthony!

I like Gus and Klatt. They make a good team.
August 24th, 2022 at 9:23 PM ^
This right here. Joel Klatt is super informative when announcing. When big plays happen Gus is there to make a statement. That’s really the only guys I will listen to commentator wise. I’m not sure why there is so much hate on Gus. Maybe cause UM has rarely been on the receiving side of his calls?
August 24th, 2022 at 9:35 PM ^
People mock him because he treats average plays as if they're SPECTACULAR GAMEBREAKING PLAYS. It gets tired and feels fake, probably because it sometimes is fake.
August 24th, 2022 at 10:55 PM ^
Gus has the energy. Klatt has the analytics. They have a good synergy together.
August 25th, 2022 at 12:55 AM ^
Klatt gets football and knows how to speak about it.
August 25th, 2022 at 2:35 AM ^
I can’t stand Gus, but Klatt is one of the best.
August 25th, 2022 at 11:11 AM ^
I re-watched the B1G championship game from last season. I'm glad I was at the game because sure got tired of hearing Klatt say "tips and overthrows" and "this team struggles with tempo" throughout the entire broadcast.
August 24th, 2022 at 9:30 PM ^
I like Gus but it does depend on whether you're on the winning side or not. If you're getting trounced or losing to a rival, you want to mute the TV. However, if you're not a homer or easily angered psychopath you can appreciate that when you're on the winning side he's awesome.
August 24th, 2022 at 8:51 PM ^
Even though it wasn't a touchdown... it was close enough to score on the next play.
Cornelius Johnson sliding into the end zone, in the snow, hanging on to the football for dear life.
August 24th, 2022 at 8:53 PM ^
My personal favorite is Klatt's "WHAT are we talkin' about here?!?" after Edwards' one-handed grab in full stride against OSU.
Although I admit that O-JA-BO is the probably the most memorable. I also liked "Guess who?! Aiden Hutchinson."
August 24th, 2022 at 9:11 PM ^
Was actually Gus as well. Great call, I thought the same thing - made the catch looked so easy.
August 24th, 2022 at 9:50 PM ^
Ah, thank you.
August 24th, 2022 at 9:18 PM ^
That's the one my kid always says, "Guess who? Aiden Hutchinson!"
August 25th, 2022 at 3:29 PM ^
I like Klatt's commentary after Donovan Edwards tossed the TD pass against Iowa in the B1G CG. The flare and inflection in his voice was awesome - "and Donovan Edwards, the freshman, gets the backwards pass and he throws an absolute DIME to Roman Wilson. WOW!"
August 24th, 2022 at 8:57 PM ^
I love that I'll be able to hear and recognize these quotes from such a memorable season for at least a few years. Every one of these posted so far I can hear in my head when I read them because I've watched the highlights so many times.
August 24th, 2022 at 8:59 PM ^
Gus, after the last play of the game:
Michigan.
Defeats Ohio State.
Forty Two to Twenty Seven.
FFFIANALLY!!

This is the big one.
When I need a hit of joy, I play this and get lost in the moment. It stops the world for a minute. I just did it and I still have a big smile on my face.
August 24th, 2022 at 9:03 PM ^
This times infinity. ^^^
Yah the other ones were great, but we still hadn’t beaten OSU for a long time at that point.
since that call we’ve been undefeated
August 24th, 2022 at 9:04 PM ^
It's my moment of Zen. I just played it again.
For me personally, it's up there with "Hello Heisman!"
August 24th, 2022 at 9:22 PM ^
We were driving past Ann Arbor in the snow when that game was on. I was in radio silence mode. My wife was mostly. She received word before we got back to Louisville that UM won. She didn't tip me off.
As I watched the game, there were so many good feels. My favorites were the first touchdowns of each half. Trying to recall, I think I believed after they were up two scores, but felt pretty good after All escorted Haskins in.
Man that was a good game.
August 25th, 2022 at 10:52 PM ^
I cried.
Like an effing baby, I cried.
August 24th, 2022 at 9:02 PM ^
I actually like in the Nebraska game… “Haskins up and over!”
August 25th, 2022 at 10:37 AM ^
i'd quote it as: "Haskins, lots of room... HASKINS UP AND OVER (wow!)"
for me it's the secondary "wow" that gets me because he's so genuinely surprised.
August 24th, 2022 at 9:15 PM ^
Jon Jansen did a highlight series of a few games from last year on his podcast and used the radio call for the highlights. Listening to Dierdorf and Brandstatter is pure joy. Below is a link if you want to listen. I may or may not listen to this about once a week.
August 24th, 2022 at 10:33 PM ^
Just listened to the whole thing. It's beautiful, man.
August 24th, 2022 at 9:16 PM ^
Ojabo was the highlight, but I also enjoyed all 5 Haskins TD calls against OSU.
Also, special mention should go to the first long Corum TD run against Washington where he blew through the line and the announcer said "Goodbye". That was a lot of fun.
August 24th, 2022 at 9:21 PM ^
Well, THANKS a LOT. All set to shut down for the night, instead I guess I have to watch the Washington game highlights.
Just to be polite to you, of course.
August 24th, 2022 at 9:27 PM ^
Ditto. Haskins ran hard that game.
August 24th, 2022 at 9:31 PM ^
My apologies.
And while it was nerve-wracking for a while, watching the Nebraska highlights is pretty fun as well.
August 25th, 2022 at 9:28 AM ^
Oh, no, you don't. You're trying to take over my morning too.
I won't succumb. I won't find the link. I won't watch. I won't . . . I'll get back to you.
August 24th, 2022 at 9:19 PM ^
The long drought is over.
August 25th, 2022 at 10:41 PM ^
This. When Brandstatter calls the 4th down that was short that sealed it.
August 24th, 2022 at 9:24 PM ^
Edwards fires.... OH HES GOT A WIDE OPEN MAN! OH ITS CAUGHT! ROMAN WILSON! TOUCHDOWN MICHIGAN!
August 25th, 2022 at 2:40 AM ^
Came here to post this, too! The best part for me was the rapid escalation at the beginning after this was clearly not going to be a humdrum play:
(Gus and Joel discussing Oklahoma getting trounced in a title game)
Gus: They’ll throw it out to EdwardsEDWARDS FIRES HE’S GOT A WIDE OPEN MAN!
(What Bleed 4 Blue said)
Seventy five yards! Josh Gattis pulls a rrrabit out of his hat!
August 25th, 2022 at 6:27 AM ^
My son keeps on commenting on Gus Johnson when we watch the replays (1000 times): "Man that announcer is hype!"
August 24th, 2022 at 9:28 PM ^
My YouTube tv dvr glitched at the O-JA-BO! Moment. I was at the game, so it took me a long time to get what people were talking about. On my dvr I just get a blip to the aftermath of the play.No commentary So On big ten 60 replay I hear the call and it’s such a coup d etat moment of the game. But that’s ok because I got “you got to pump it up!” Live and in person, and that will live in my memory forever
August 24th, 2022 at 9:31 PM ^
Nobody has mentioned the call on Erik All's TD against Penn State. McDonough has his moments and I liked that call cause he recognized it was a TD right away and ramped the call from start to finish:
"Lots of running room down the sideline! Erik All the tight end! Will they catch him....NOOOO!"
And not a call specifically but Joel Klatt ripping on the piss poor officiating in the MSU game was awesome. We've all kind of forgotten about the strip sack that was called back on a ridiculous review. I swear the officiating changed after that game and Klatt and Fox might have played a part.
August 24th, 2022 at 9:35 PM ^
The NOOOOOOOO, was awesome.
August 24th, 2022 at 10:33 PM ^
Ok this thread is just turning into a dumping ground for great moments from last season.
And I am here for it.
August 24th, 2022 at 11:54 PM ^
My favorite too. Very underrated play, with a great call, especially the NOOO! Without that play, we may not have played in the B1G championship or playoff.
August 25th, 2022 at 9:12 AM ^
I clicked on this thread to specifically mention this call, but glad to see it's already been mentioned. It wasn't my favorite call of the year, but it's definitely up there. This was such a huge play in the season and Sean McDonough is always excellent in the big moments of a big game.
