Who is your NFL team and how do you rate their draft?
Browns fan here, happy with the draft overall considering we did not have a 1st or 2nd round pick.
Drafting 3 players from Oklahoma provides much needed depth and hopefully impact players as they develop. York, the kicker from LSU should do very well despite being drafted in round 4, I am glad Berry pulled the trigger when he did. Last year the Browns didn't have a reliable kicker
I rated the Browns draft a B- overall. What say you?
Bears
D
They are horrible when developing talent, so it doesn't matter who they draft.
Not a big NFL fan, but...
Lions: B+
Jets: A
Still celebrating
As for the draft, the Rams added depth at a couple positions of need. So I'm happy.
The Patriots get a C- from me. Bill Belichick is the top coach and a bottom 10 GM in the NFL, IMO.
Tom Brady papered over a lot of mistakes.
If Zach Wilson isn't a tire fire, the Pats could finish last in that division. I'm not quite as sold on Mac Jones as everyone else.
After years of watching Belichick draft, I kind of expect stuff like this. Their valuation of picks certainly is not the same as everyone else's. But after taking a deep breath, I can at least see what they were thinking. They took their guard of the future, after all the OL with first round grades were gone, and it was a reach on paper. But, Strange is insanely athletic - in fact, he has the 7th highest relative athletic score of any O-lineman in the last 35 years. Understandable they didn't want to wait a round and risk someone else grabbing him before he came back around. Their 2nd and 3rd rounders are also incredible athletes - Thornton was the fastest player in the draft, and Jones has the look of an impact ST player and slot corner. I love the philosophy of taking multiple late-round OL, including Stueber as their potential RT of the future. I didn't like grabbing two RBs, given what they have on the roster. The QB seems like a lower-ceiling Mac Jones, but you never know.
Bottom line: they really emphasized athleticism, special teams, and the running game. I wish they'd drafted more defense, especially front 7, at the expense of a RB and/or QB. I also wish they'd be more patient and draft for value, but Bill picks his guys and gets them. Overall it's a typical off-script B- draft for me.
Lions got Hutch. After that they could've traded up to grab four punters in a row and it would still have been a good draft.
The trade up to get Jameson Williams was excellent. 2nd and 3rd round picks look very solid. They seem to have grabbed a decent-looking backup TE in the 5th. The rest are, you know, whatever, maybe they turn into something and maybe not, but if you're getting too excited or too depressed over 6th and 7th round picks, you're probably overdoing it.
Really good draft overall.
After the Loins, my team is the Jets...
Pretty happy with Sauce, Wilson, Johnson, Ruckert, and Hall. Team should be markedly better next season.
vlady, no love for your home state vikings?
Ugh, no. I've lived here 14 years now and still actively root against the local teams, especially when it comes to the Vikings and Kirk Cousins. I often take more pleasure in their losses than in Detroit wins.
I know, I'm very immature.
when i lived in socal i didn't really adopt or pay attention to any new teams. hockey was the exception, and while the red wings were always #1, i was at least a fair-weather fan of the ducks and kings. and i particularly liked it when the lakers would run off the rails. so i guess that makes both of us immature.
Is that any different than rooting for Michigan and anyone playing OSU, Staee or ND? I think that makes us all quite immature.
i'm more immature than you are, so there.
After the Loins, my team is the Jets...
I'm sorry.
After the Loins, my team is the Jets...
You are a glutton for punishment.
I know the Browns traded for DeShawn Watson, but I forgot that Watson was accused of sexually assaulting most of the women he’s met. How the hell is all of that supposed to work?
He'll definitely be suspended to start the season on some "personal conduct" grounds.
It will be very interesting to see for exactly how long though. My guess is 4 games.
Should be for life. He's a scumbag.
But considering the NFL brings back people who KILL people - he'll be around as long as he is good.
Lions... So I know that Jamieson Williams will be a big impact in the WR room. But I still have some concerns about giving up sure-fire defensive starters at 32 and 34. The defense is the worst unit on the field and needs players all over. Those two selections could have been a top flight DB and a pretty good LB. I keep thinking Nakobe Dean, but he dropped into the 80's and I don't know why. Maybe I just had a bigger impression than I should have because of the Orange Bowl? Nonetheless, giving up two selections with first round talent for one pains me. Even if that one is a top 5 pick. The Lions need so much talent...
Supposedly Dean has a torn pec that he was a little secretive about and refused to get surgery for. That's the rumor, anyway.
Anyway, "two first round talents for one" isn't a good way to look at it. The Lions only dropped 12 spots in the second round and the gap in available talent there is marginal at most. They moved up 20 spots in the first and the gap there is far greater than just 8 more spots. Top of the first round talent is, in any draft, drastically better than the bottom of it. The bust rate around picks 32 and 34 is not insignificant. Top-15 picks pan out much more often and when they do pan out, it's usually in a big way. Williams would've been the first receiver off the board and might've been a top-5 pick, if he had a healthy ACL.
Josh Paschal looks like a starter or at least a heavy rotational player (on the D-line, that's just as good.) I'll take a potential elite receiver + potential defensive starter over two potential defensive starters. Right now the Lions do not make any defense respect anything 30 yards or more downfield. Williams can change that and that is an invaluable thing.
“Supposedly Dean has a torn pec that he was a little secretive about and refused to get surgery for”
So instead of drafting a guy with maybe a torn pec they drafted a WR with a for sure ACL injury.
Yeah, cause you know the timeline for that, you know what to expect, and it sure looks like the whole NFL is in the dark about whatever Dean had going on, because they all dropped him off the low-1st-top-2nd grade that he was supposed to have.
Honestly, I didn't like the Williams pick when it happened, because exactly what you're saying. But after thinking about it, and discussing it, it actually makes a lot of sense. The Lions next season have 2 first round and 2 second round picks, so a lot of flexibility. It behooves them to be patient with Williams, perhaps even letting him sit most of the season (same with James Mitchell, tbh) as a way to "tank" without tanking. Keep some talent back and don't improve too much so next draft you can move up (I'm assuming the Lions will be picking somewhere around 10ish) and get the QB you like for the future.
Dean had injury concerns and then red flags that he hasnt addressed those injury concerns with any surgery
Too bad those injury concerns didn't manifest themselves in Michigan's playoff game against Georgia.
Jaguars fan . . and does it matter? An organizational disaster in the C-suite can't be undone by even good coaches.
Outside of the 2017 Sacksonville moonshot team, the Jaguars have won 32 games in the other 9 years . . 3.5 wins a year.
I would throw rocks at everything if the Lions had the chance to draft Hutch and picked Travon Walker instead. Not to make you feel all rotten about Trent Baalke and his bizarre draft choice, but one of Walker's calling cards is his versatility, yet the Lions' second round pick played as versatile a set of snaps as Walker and racked up a lot more sacks, TFL, tackles, etc. even while playing at Kentucky instead of UGA's loaded defense, and drawing all the attention. Hate to say it but Walker has the potential to be the next Tony Mandarich or Sam Bowie.
As I said prior, it really doesn't matter. They could have picked Hutch or Thibs or any of those top guys and most likely they would have been gone before they finished their 1st contract.
This isn't a team where there's an enormous difference between picking 1st or 4th or where a great draft is going to get them in the division mix (like I believe the Jets had this weekend). It's a complete organizational disaster that has little hope of being turned around any time soon.
How many black NFL coordinators TURN DOWN head coaching positions at a place where they played? Pretty damn risky considering the situation with Bienemy. Well, Byron Leftwich did.
As a Michigan fan, I still have nightmares about Jordan Davis and Nakobe Dean.
As a Philadelphia Eagles fan, I'm very, very, very, very happy that I get to root for those guys now.
Add in AJ Brown and...yeah I don't think I can remember a draft night this exciting (I was very hype when we got Brandon Graham though).
I legit think Jordan Davis can be the best player in the draft. He is an absolute freak. Feels like we drafted Zion Williamson but 100 lbs bigger.
Jets fan, and I tend to be an optimist for all my sports but I really was impressed, gonna go A-
Not crazy about two Buckeyes but both Wilson and Ruckert seem to have a decent floor and fairly high ceiling. Love that we were able to get probably the top CB, the top RB, likely one of the top Edges, arguably the best WR, and one of the top 2-3 TEs. All positions of need.
I still have no idea if Zach will be a bust or not, but the front office certainly gave him some tools to work with and the OL should be decent if Becton recovers.
Lions:
1st round A.
2nd round B-/C+
The remaining rounds I'll grade a solid B.
Overall grade A-/B+. On paper this is one of the best Lion drafts in years. Hopefully these players can be developed to have great NFL careers. I think the first round picks will have great NFL careers.
I'd give the Bears' draft a B.
I think CB Kyler Gordon (Washington) and S Jaquan Brisker (Penn State) both have the potential to start as rookies.
WR Velus Jones (Tennessee) in the 3rd round is an interesting pick. Not sure how much he'll contribute to the offense, but he could be electric on kick and/or punt returns.
Outside of that, they drafted 4 offensive linemen - T Braxton Jones (Southern Utah), G Zachary Thomas (San Diego State), C Doug Kramer (Illinois), and T Ja'Tyre Carter (Southern). I'm optimistic about Kramer, but don't really know anything about the other three.
They also made a couple of interesting undrafted free agent signings in LB Jack Sanborn (Wisconsin) and RB Master Teague (Ohio State).
Fellow Bears fan. It's really hard to grade because we've been so inconsistent in our talent development. I like the potential of all the picks although none of them are surefire slamdunks which is always a risk with this team. Mainly, this draft will hinge on how well the OL pans out. If we get a get an average or serviceable o-lineman or two of this group, I'll consider this draft a good one.
Bears = C
While this team has so many needs to fill, I'm not sure getting 3 DBs was a good idea. Must have been seen as value picks by the new GM. If a third of these guys pan out, it's a success to me. I fully expect this team to be drafting top 3 next year. Hopefully then, we can add a top WR or OL to the team.
Lions and I give them B+. My only gripe is that we didn't get some speed at linebacker. Nakobe Dean reminds me of Devin Bush Jr and Nakobe dropped to Round 3. I love doubling up at d-end and we might have a ballhawk at safety.
Tampa native. I don't really follow them the way I used to, even after Brady showed up, but I suppose they're still my team.
Overall, I think they did a good job drafting for their needs. They're in a fortunate position where they don't have any gaping holes on their roster right now, but they did a good job addressing areas of concern on the DL and OL, as they had starters walk in FA and a starting guard who retired. Got themselves a solid TE prospect as well who they can look to for replacing Gronk in the next year or two.
That being said, they took a freaking punter in round 4. My understanding is that some of it was to let a veteran punter go to free up some further cap space, but still, I have to believe most any punter you're going to want will be there deep into the sixth and seventh rounds. In my mind, they had bigger needs, including a secondary that is a smidge shaky at times. You could've drafted for that need in the fourth instead, and probably still got the punter you wanted by the time you picked again in the fifth to sixth rounds.
I'd say they are squarely in the B+ range. They overall drafted well for their needs, but when you take a punter or a kicker anywhere other than late on Day 3, you don't deserve an A-grade from me. You can get so much more value from your pick elsewhere. Take another corner or pass rusher. You literally can't have too many good versions of those in this league.
Who Dey. Solid. Already addressed OL in free agency. Concentrated on D in draft.
Fan of a team formerly known as the Redskins. So I no longer pay attention or care, I don’t even live in the DC area anymore where I’m from. I may adopt my Detroit native dad’s team, and most of your all’s team, the Lions.
That being said, they (Lions) did good as the hot Hutchinson. Who else did they get?
Lions fan - thought they did pretty well. The Jameson pick was a reach but he's got maybe the top upside of any WR in this draft if he can get back from the ACL injury without significant issues. Hutchinson is a great top-line pick, and I'm high on Paschal feels like a guy who could be a good starter for years with some additional coaching. Also, James Houstan could be a surprise 6th rounder as a depth edge guy.
The Lions went against everything they represent.
I take it that means you thought they had a good draft?
Rams - the NFL draft was this past weekend? 😂
After the Super Bowl, the Rams picked up Bobby Wagner and Allen Robinson and a bunch of lineman in the off-season. They drafted Wisconsin’s Bruss, who will compete immediately at RG, and a bunch of mid to late round depth on defense. If the Rams suffer injuries or need a playoff boost, they will trade some future draft picks for some current pro-bowlers to win immediately. 🤷♂️
Lions did the obvious with #2. Any other pick would have been just a major fuck up. Then they did some real head scratch things which is their MO.
Overall C because they are always average, which is being very generous.
Chiefs fans, great draft. Love that Karlaftis is finally on my team. Basically every player was a PFF all-star or had been rated much higher overall than where they were drafted. Met all our needs - especially at DB. Only way I would have seen an improvement on our draft is if we had taken H2 instead of the Titans.
Da Bears! C+. Our new GM did what he could with what he was left by the previous regime. Which was not much. No first round draft pick, and created more pics by trading back, and addressed what he could. Bears still have absolutely no weapons for Fields so yea.
wrong topic.....delete.
Seahawks fan here, thought they had a pretty good draft (B+/A-) and hope they fixed the issues on the OL that have plagued them for years with the Cross and Lucas pickups.
Not sure I would have chosen Walker over HH but I understand why they did.
The rest of the picks were on Defense which I agree was an area of need. Was wishing they would have snagged Ojabo at 40 or 41 instead of Mafe and Walker. They could have gotten Ojabo and Mafe at 40 and 41 then taken HH at 109 and gotten two potential studs for their 29th rated pass rush.
As for QB, I'm not sure Pete and John are done there yet and I don't think they liked their draft options. What they have on roster I doubt is gonna get it done. They may be waiting until next season when they have 2 first round picks and a lot more options to choose from to find Wilson's real replacement.
