OT: under-rated 80s movies
So my wife is an immigrant and (until recently) did not understand the concept of an "80's movie". Overall, she loves these types of movies, especially because a good amount of them were filmed/set right in our back yard in Chicago. With that, there is a certain "feel" about 80s movies that can make them very unique and time-stamped that cannot be duplicated. For example, Licorice Pizza and Stranger Things tries really hard to capture the 80s aesthetic, but I can see right through it.
So, what are your under-rated 80s movies we all should watch. Mine are:
- To Live and Die in LA
- 3 O'Clock High
- 52 Pick-up
- Class
- Black Rain
- The Return of the Living Dead
- UHF
- Legend
- Angel Heart
- Big Trouble in Little China
- My Bloody Valentine
- Repo Man
Anything to add MgoBlogeratti?
Return of the Living Dead is amazing.
Easily in my top 5 horror movies of all time!
I quote it regularly.

Scared the shit out of me as a kid.
After Hours - 1985
better off dead
Not sure if underrated, but its an absolute classic

Perhaps underrated (?) would be its sequel, One Crazy Summer. There's a soft spot in my heart for that movie, even though it wasn't quite as good as Better Off Dead.
was that little fat boy you? No, no, but i used to beat the shit out of him saying 'why are you so fat!, why are you so fat!'"
Yea. Not under rated, but I do believe it was filmed that the same high school as 3 o’clock high.
“Didn’t ask for a dime. Two dollars. Cash…”
And to drink ... Peru.
“Gee, I’m really sorry your mom blew up, Ricky”
Serious question:
Which is better? Speaking no English at all, or speaking Howard Cossell?
“That’s a damn shame when folks be throwing away a perfectly good white boy like that”
I can't move my right arm.
"a study in mopishness"
Logged on just to post this one and it's right at the top. Nice.
Same here. My 20-something kids can quote the entire film. This might be the only thing I did right as a parent.
Love this movie!
"Ricky is always trying..... how do you say, like the octopus? He's always trying to put his testicles on me"
Tentacles, n-t, tentacles. Big difference.
A octopus dragging his testicles around the coral reef would be a bit uncomfortable.
Dad joke:
How many tickles does it take to make an octopus laugh?
Ten tickles. 🐙 😜
8 real ones and two test tickles.
It might work better if it was a squid.
Agree with Legend and Big Trouble and Little China
I'll add They Live and Dark City.
Dark City was released in 1998. But +1 for They Live.
Ok, I'll replace Dark City with Predator.
Although most people know of Predator, imho it is still severely underrated as one of the best action films of the 80s and probably the best Schwarzeneger film after the original Terminator.
Bloodsport and War Games probably belong on this list as well.
Short Circuit?
Also, no John Hughes in your list? /troll
No John Hughes movie is underrated which is why there are none on my list.
I now live in the Chicago suburbs, about 2 miles from the Home Alone house and 5 miles from Cameron Fry’s house.
Dutch is the underrated John Hughes movie in my mind, but it was released in the '90's. Otherwise, I think most of his movies do not qualify as underrated.
Dutch is a great movie. Very underrated.
ROBOCOP !
You are biased!
I sometime use the line, “the Tigers are playing tonight…I never miss a game”
Edit: I was a big Paul VerHoevan fan. He directed some of the most prolific movies of the late 80s and early 90s. Robocop was his first in thy regard.
I alwsys uses that phrase
Starship Troopers is also awesome.
That was a late 90s movie but one of my favorites
Agreed. That was the bookend to PVH movies in the 90s. He made a decent effort with Hollow Man, but that movie sucked ass.
Yeah, Hollow Man was a total fail. There's none of the ambition or the biting sub-text that Robocop and Starship Troopers are brimming with. But it fails as straight sci fi/action film. The special effects are good but who cares?
Agreed. I’d buy that for a dollar
Adventures in Babysitting
Spaceballs
This is Spinal Tap
Beetlejuice
UHF

Is that weird Al?

It sure is!
Spinal tap is definitely on this list for me.
A few of my roommates from Bursley saw this at the State Theater. I think it was the second running at the time. It was fantastic. Great memories!
One of my roommates in particular felt a certain attachment as he was in a band playing bass at the time. He graduated from UM with an economics degree and worked the floor of the NYSE by day and played gigs at night at dives in Manhattan. Now he's an econ prof at Georgetown. Great guy!
Fletch. Ball bearings.
One of my all time favorites, Fletch 1 and 2
