Georgia covid outbreak not limited to just J.T. Daniels

From Georgia 247 board:

"We’re told that there are multiple other positive tests and there has been at least one false positive. Also hear that a few staffers are dealing with it. I know the rumors are running rampant about outbreaks but as of right now, trusted contacts don’t view it as severe. That could change rapidly, though."

Nope.

Don't take the bait. Just like the reports of OSU and the flu and then Stroud is maskless boarding the team bus.

Not saying it's not true, I'm saying you let them worry about it and assume they're full strength and pumped full of steroids.

If you destroy a team that missed a bunch of practice due to COVID, sorry, their problem now ours...there will be no asterisks.  Onward to Indy and we wish them the VERY best.

...oh and masks on and fist bumps only during the postgame handshake boys. Sanitize it up immediately after, celebrate, 24 hour rule, Bama.

As much as I want Michigan to win Id rather it not be against a UGA team decimated by COVID. Id hate to listen to everyone asterisk this win for the next  10 years

I'm concerned about UGA hiding their positives, getting their asses kicked on 12/31, then Michigan's roster being decimated by Covid going into the Bama game.

A newly published research study conducted in South Africa offers some long-term hope:

"South Africans contracting Covid-19 in the current fourth wave of infections are 80% less likely to be hospitalized if they catch the omicron variant, compared with other strains, according to a study released by the National Institute for Communicable Diseases.

Once admitted to the hospital, the risk of severe disease doesn’t differ from other variants, the authors led by scientists Nicole Walter and Cheryl Cohen said.

Compared to delta infections in South Africa between April and November, omicron infections are associated with a 70% lower risk of severe disease, they said. The omicron data was collected for the two months through November."

One caveat:

"So even though cases of omicron were less likely to end up in hospital than cases of delta, it is not possible to say whether this is due to inherent differences in virulence or whether this is due to higher population immunity in November compared to earlier in the year,”

This does not mean that American hospitals won't be overwhelmed with Omicron infecteds, since there are still millions of Americans who are unvaccinated; smaller regional hospitals can quickly run out of their limited supply of ICU beds.

Unfortunately this doesn't really lessen the possibility of new COVID infections affecting Michigan's team.

It's not that the data is unreliable (South Africa is a country of 60 million people, so it's a large sample size) but that there are some factors that may not apply here.  SA has a significantly younger population than the U.S., and it is in summer right now, when peoples' immune systems generally function a little better.  (It's also been speculated that more of SA's population has been infected already than ours, although that's uncertain.)

It seems likely in any event that if you have existing Covid antibodies (either from vaccination or prior infection), omicron won't make you too sick.  That's been true for every Covid variant to date.  It remains unclear, though, what it will do to those who have still been unexposed to the virus (which is perhaps 20% of the U.S. population).  Getting vaccinated remains a very good bet.

Man, that sucks. If it's omicron, it sucks even more because it's so dang contagious that they have to be worried, but it's also doesn't have that bad of symptoms which makes it even more painful to possibly have to shut down.

If they cancel the playoffs, we need to find some computer rankings that put us #1 so we can hang a national title banner. I mean you know the other 3 playoff schools will do it...

They will all recover in time for the game after quarantine, but it keeps them from being able to practice.

We need to put out some video of us repping the Wishbone or something like that to freak them out that they can't practice for it.

/conspiracy alert.....

ESPN is broadcasting the CFP playoffs and you currently have one of the SEC teams (Georgia) currently experiencing a Covid spread throughout their team.

A quick scan on ESPN.com and also the College Football page on ESPN.com show zero articles about this.

Meanwhile, they (ESPN) continue to jam news alerts of NFL players, coaches, assistant coaches, janitors and water boys testing positive - but not a lick about one of the CFP playoff teams.

NOTHING TO SEE HERE.

I know everyone is all concerned but I'd have to imagine the worst case is it would be postponed...even if it's weeks. Certainly, not ideal but I just don't see this being a "nevermind no playoffs this year guys go home" type of thing.
