Good. It’s time for Detroit to rebuild. Stafford is now dead weight, and he has a shit attitude. Better to start over now.
January 23rd, 2021 at 6:23 PM ^
You’re an idiot. The Lions need to offload him while he’s still worth a decent value. He has not been Detroit’s problem. As for Kelly...I’m not going there. I will not disparage another mans wife.
January 23rd, 2021 at 6:41 PM ^
Decent value? Lol. Yeah, tons of teams are looking for a 32-year-old QB with mediocre accuracy and a career of losing. The Lions should’ve moved him three years ago.
January 23rd, 2021 at 7:10 PM ^
Well at least you doubled down on being an idiot, so none of us are left having any doubts.
January 23rd, 2021 at 7:29 PM ^
Saving this comment for when Stafford is traded to the 49ers and immediately wins a Super Bowl.

Things like that have happened.
January 23rd, 2021 at 9:19 PM ^
Why we need a young Al Davis running this team. Ok, maybe Hamp is the person who knows.
Jim bombed out at NE under pressure, had a great start in 1976 as the SF QB but then crashed. Tom Flores finally figured things out with him and got 2 SB titles

You either have not been watching the Lions lately, or you don't know the first thing about football. Matt Stafford has been an upper echelon quarterback in 3 of the last 4 seasons for the Lions. Their moribund franchise would have been lucky to win 2 or 3 games a year without him over the past few seasons. He made them vaguely competitive.
He and Kelly also have done a lot of charity and been great ambassadors for the city of Detroit. I would think anyone who's paying attention or appreciates his contributions to the city and the franchise would wish him well and understand his desire to move on and pursue winning championships rather than go through yet another rebuild at this stage in his career.
Not sure how one could come to these conclusions and have the slightest idea what they are talking about.

Up vote x 100

Apparently half the NFL wants him.
January 23rd, 2021 at 7:45 PM ^
Totally agree with you. Except for Yoko Ono. She's a piece of work.

January 23rd, 2021 at 7:45 PM ^
Then why even go there by mentioning her name??
January 23rd, 2021 at 10:46 PM ^
Great dude, but he’s definitely been a big part of the problem. I just wish they would have done this 5 years
January 23rd, 2021 at 6:24 PM ^
If by dead weight you mean salary cap space that can be better used with more players, then you are right. He would be completely overpaid and underused during a rebuild...
Edit: You edited and added more shit. But you certainly clarified that your post is bullshit...
January 23rd, 2021 at 6:58 PM ^
I like the idiot comment. That's what I was thinking. Stafford has given Detroit his all. He reminds of Verlander. Let him go and win something. He doesn't owe Detroit anything!!!!!
January 23rd, 2021 at 10:33 PM ^
LOLOLOL NO! Thats is a horrible comparison! Verlander has playoff and WS wins and no hitters galore! Stafford has....crickets....sidearm ints maybe.
January 23rd, 2021 at 7:29 PM ^
You're an idiot.
If Stafford was on a competent team, with competent coaching and management, and competent owners, he'd be mentioned in the same breath as Brees and Manning.
January 23rd, 2021 at 7:30 PM ^
Maybe Eli Manning.
January 23rd, 2021 at 7:31 PM ^
First ever triple post
January 23rd, 2021 at 7:31 PM ^
Maybe Eli Manning.
January 23rd, 2021 at 8:12 PM ^
Absolutely not. Matt Ryan or Rivers at best.
January 23rd, 2021 at 9:47 PM ^
I certainly it agree that he would be much more highly regarded but Brees and Manning are two of the top 5-10 quarterbacks of all time. Stafford’s accuracy issues will prevent him from ever being in their company
January 23rd, 2021 at 9:56 PM ^
Stafford has completed 62.6% of his passes for 45,109 yards and 282 touchdowns. He led 38 game-winning drives during his career with the Lions and 31 fourth-quarter comebacks.
But okay.
January 23rd, 2021 at 9:15 PM ^
Good sir, go fuck yourself!
January 24th, 2021 at 12:58 AM ^
At a minimum, I know the Bears would be lucky to have him.
January 23rd, 2021 at 6:18 PM ^
It's the only path forward. Stafford isn't the problem but the quickest path to a turnaround is a QB on a rookie contract.
January 23rd, 2021 at 7:14 PM ^
That implies the Lions are capable of drafting a QB of value. Yes, they drafted Stafford, but 1) that was a different regime and 2) the long, long history of the franchise seems to argue against this possibility
January 23rd, 2021 at 7:23 PM ^
Exactly. This is right move.
January 23rd, 2021 at 7:59 PM ^
Not the only way, but that would certainly make me feel better about it. Rookie contract QBs are smart plays.
Probably the smartest analysis of this I've seen, tbh.
January 23rd, 2021 at 8:45 PM ^
I think they need too much to rebuild with Stafford's contract and I've been pretty good with the Madden so...
January 23rd, 2021 at 10:59 PM ^
Cam Newton had a cheap ass contract and the Pats are sitting home and Brady is playing tomorrow.
I really doubt they would trade him if he hadn't asked for it, it's a losing move. But keeping a guy that would rather not player here is also a losing move.
January 23rd, 2021 at 8:33 PM ^
Like Justin Fields? I don't know.

I’d love for my Niners to propose a trade with Detroit for Stafford. With Shanahan’s offense and the weapons surrounding Stafford, including an actual Left Tackle, offensive line, and stable of RBs, I think he’d be amazing. Make this happen, Lynch!
January 23rd, 2021 at 6:20 PM ^
5th rounder, maybe 3rd if they can find a sucker
January 23rd, 2021 at 6:22 PM ^
Don’t talk about my Bears that way!
January 23rd, 2021 at 6:21 PM ^
I hope they give him a good trade, like Verlander got. He's earned that - he was never the problem in Detroit and he's done a fair amount of work for the community. But I can see the Lions ditching him for some middling deal with another crap team so they can tell us what a steal they got.
Maybe Homes and Campbell will be different? We're about to find out...
January 23rd, 2021 at 6:44 PM ^
A good deal? He’s not owed anything. I have no ill will for him but the organization has to do whatever is needed. Also, he’s been with the lions, I’m not sure he can go anywhere worse.
January 23rd, 2021 at 7:01 PM ^
Is it Homes or Homey?
January 23rd, 2021 at 6:22 PM ^
Trade him to San Fran, New England or Washington for their first. Rebuild. Hope wherever he goes he wins the whole damn thing.
January 23rd, 2021 at 6:26 PM ^
I would happily give Detroit the Niners first round pick for Stafford, but I fear that at pick 12 Detroit will think all the “good” QBs will have already been taken...
January 23rd, 2021 at 7:19 PM ^
There are plenty of viable QB options in free agency this year. No need to reach for a QB in the first round.
January 23rd, 2021 at 10:24 PM ^
I don't necessarily think the QB pick needs to be this year. This team doesnt have the talent to compete for much in 2021 anyway. Holmes is in a position where he can basically pick who he thinks is bpa throughout most of the draft. Talent scouting is his schtick so maybe we'll select some guys who can play for once.
Another potential option is Sam Darnold. Hes shown some potential, is still 23, shouldnt cost too much and every person in football agrees he needs a new team. Sure the Lions are Jets level disfunctional but if the price is right it might be a fairly safe risk to take.

Great post, this.

If his wife thinks Michigan is a "dictatorship," wait til she gets a load of California, Massachusetts, and DC. Matt better make sure she doesn't pack her Instagram account.
January 24th, 2021 at 1:11 AM ^
It is. Sadly.
January 23rd, 2021 at 6:25 PM ^
In a better world Detroit would have surrounded him with a better team and they likely would have accomplished more than they have, but it's probably time to move on. I don't think they'll get a ton for him in a trade, but I absolutely could see a team looking to win now (like, say, the Colts) take a run at him. Hell, the Bears keep fashioning themselves as a contender (for some inexplicable reason in my eyes) and might kick the tires. I honestly don't know enough about other teams and their cap numbers to make a great guess, but Stafford is still an upper-half of the league in terms of starter QBs and probably has a couple years left of good production in him even with the injuries.
