OT: Marquette Beats No. 4 Wisconsin in Thriller, With D.J. Carton's Help
Thrilling end to the game, as the former Michigan recruit Carton missed a free throw and a teammate tipped it in. LINK.
Anytime a Wisconsin team shows up in the top five in anything, it's only a matter of time before it's exposed for being a fraud.

Always tough to win in another person’s arena. Good win for Marquette. Need Big Ten to do well next week otherwise conference wins will mean less which would be bad for us given our non-con schedule which is ok but lacks upper echelon competition besides NC State.

I’m getting my first viewing of Both Gach tonight. Both of him.

Thriller yes, post worthy no. Marquette isn' exactly the Sisters or the Poor regardless of DJ Carton.

if only you'd weigh in before others post.....

F Carton.
Thanks again DDJ for costing us him.

Yeah, tough finish for Wisco. I’m not sure I agree that losing on a fluky last possession to a solid team on the road qualifies as “exposed for being a fraud”.

If a basketball team had a face, Wisconsin’s would be the most punchable by far.
I think I hate Wisconsin basketball more than MSU. Too many years of watching Bo Ryan teams suck the life out of the game and beat Michigan in the most soul crushing ways possible.

Fortunately or not our son was born on 2/27/20 at St Joe AA. We made the concerted effort to try and watch UofM v Wisconsin in our room prior to any sort of “push.” Needless to say we lost and he was born shortly thereafter. It’ll always be a nice birth story, but makes me seriously detest Wisconsin bball.

I watched that game at a bar with a friend of mine who’s a big Wisconsin fan. I felt pretty good about Michigan’s chances going into that game, and then Wisconsin had to go and hit at or just above 50% from three point land. It was absolutely absurd. They just kept chucking up threes and they were going in like it was nothing.
It sucked to watch, but had to tip my cap to Wisconsin that night. Destiny pre-determined that it was just flat out their night. When you hit at or above 50% from three, you’re going to beat your opponent almost every time, regardless of whether you’re playing Oakland or Duke.

What is this “bar” thing you speak of?

Congrats on fatherhood (or, re-fatherhood(?)). Many years of laughing at Wisconsin bball in your and your sons future. I also feel very confident that Juwan will bring this program to extreme heights and even when he’s gone we will continue to thrive and recruit like a blue blood

Much appreciated, first child and he’s enjoying mom and dad working from home for the time being.

I don't hate them more than MSU, but I definitely hate them. Brad Davison is their identity and losing last night's game on an attempt to draw a charge is poetic justice

Just glad carton didn't stay at osu!

So...
Almost every "powerhouse" B10 team has had nailbiter Ws (or here, an L) so far with "lesser" opponents (and I'm using that in quotes because hey, on any given day, ya know -- especially THIS season, with zero homecourt advantage).
Except one. Iowa. Now, Iowa has played three absolute soupcans so far, no doubt about it. That said? They've been winning with absolute cruelty, and when you have THREE centers that put up a total of 55 points, as was the case the other night, well...things are looking pretty good.
They've got North Carolina next. What you do say? Iowa: a great team, with Final Four potential? Or is this a true "we don't know yet" type of thing until we see them against an opponent with a pulse?
December 5th, 2020 at 12:15 AM ^
As a local, they, per usual in life, likely lie in the middle. On the surface I've a tough time calling them a true top 5 team. However...looking across the college landscape, many teams are a mess and of course full of talented but young players. Iowa is the furthest from young. They have shooters, they have a devent NBA prospect in Wieskamp, and they have....Garza. Dude is a baller, maybe weak on defense, but has post moves, an outside shot, and a propensity to get away with murdering people on the offensive end and the ball in his hands/soon to be in his hands.
We'll see if Fran has finally decided defense means anything because jesus it's been embarassing the past few years but even if not they're going to be a tough out for most teams, even come March.
So the whole top 10, top 5 thing might be real this year. Can they match up with a Kansas, Duke, Kentucky, later on in the year? We'll see. But the March tournament is always a bit of a toss up.
December 5th, 2020 at 9:07 AM ^
I’m still not sold on Iowa myself. Garza is what he was last year, an electric scorer at multiple levels. They have great distributors up front with Bohannon and McCaff, and I can certainly see them in the top 4 of the Big Ten, but I would feel more comfortable calling them a top 15 team and a sweet 16 team than putting any weight into their ranking suggesting they make it to the championship or final four. The problem with them is a lot of their team is streaky outside of Garza, and if Garza has an off night or if they find a team that can defend, I don’t see them being able to win a game on the defensive end of the court, or finding a way to get buckets of Garza is off/in foul trouble. That said, I understand the idea that this Iowa team is an Iowa team on roids. It’s just another instance of a team that can race to our score most opponents, but will inevitably drop some games due to poor shooting or poor defense

Thanks for the thoughts here, both of you.
I think we will get a much better idea of just how good Iowa is before too much longer here, for sure. They've got North Carolina on 12/8, and Gonzaga on 12/19, prior to getting into the Big 10 schedule.
December 6th, 2020 at 9:40 AM ^
Bad examples with Kansas and Kentucky. They are both trash. They will probably improve over the season, but definitely not top 10 or even top 15.
December 5th, 2020 at 10:32 AM ^
Iowa's defense is still trash. Their lack of defense will catch up to them when they play better teams
December 4th, 2020 at 11:05 PM ^
Despite the outcome... holy cow is the Big Ten stacked this year.
December 5th, 2020 at 8:09 AM ^
If we can manage a winning record, or.500 even, in conference, that may be considered an achievement. Has to be the top league in the nation.

I watched the game from start to finish. A few observations:
Marquette played fantastic team defense on both Potter and Reuvers. Their senior big was excellent. Looks like he’s probably about 6’10”, but really moved his feet.
Marquette had a freshman, Justin Lewis, who looked like a future superstar. High energy on both ends of the court. He was the one with the tip-in with less than a second left on the clock.
Wisconsin teams are always excellent defenders, but they made Marquette work for every single basket. Really, both teams were very good in this regard. Wisconsin defenders are almost all phenomenal on ball, though Marquette did not look like a particularly crisp offense. They were very few uncontested shots.
I like Michigan’s chances because of the size and athleticism and energy at the 3-5 spots, but only if they take care of the ball a little bit better. It’s hard to out-junkyard dog Wisconsin, but I think Dickinson, Johns, Williams Livers and Brown will be up to the task.

Didn't Carton go to Ohio State?! Who the hell am I thinking of?!
Also...why the fuck is that music playing on that link's video (ESPN's video clip)....it's horrendous, just play the broadcast call.
December 5th, 2020 at 1:25 AM ^
Yes, that Carton went to OSU and transferred mid-way thru his freshman year.
December 5th, 2020 at 1:59 AM ^
Damn I do not remember the transfer whatsoever. Old age is a bitch (mid-30s that is).
December 5th, 2020 at 7:56 AM ^
As we've experienced over the past decade, basketball teams develop through the season, so an early win or loss doesn't indicate as much as it seems at the time.
December 5th, 2020 at 10:19 AM ^
While true, fuck Wisconsin basketball (and their endless buzzer beating miracles).
Seeing Wisconsin lose like that is beautiful porn.
December 5th, 2020 at 7:58 AM ^
There are moments when I believe that teams like Wisconsin get ranked in the Top 5 specifically so people will tune into a game like this and then rage at the voters in the poll, demanding an explanation as to how they could be so wrong. The simpler explanation may be that they like to troll Wisconsin like this, as we all likely would if we had a vote in the poll.
December 5th, 2020 at 8:52 AM ^
Didn’t realize Carton ended up at Marquette. Is he the highly ranked talent that stepped away for personal reasons? Hope he is doing better
December 5th, 2020 at 9:59 AM ^
That was a lovely put-back tap-in with lots of air underneath it. Usually guys panic and just spike it at the hoop and it bounces off.
December 5th, 2020 at 10:28 AM ^
Wisconsin trying to draw a charge to end the game then getting fucked because of it is the content I l live for
