Dr. Chris Hutchinson not afraid of 2nd wave, and would be comfortable with Aidan playing this fall
Former Wolverine and current ER doc says he's not afraid of a 2nd wave that may or may not occur, and that he would 100% support his son, Aidan, playing this fall.
I like the sound of that.
I also support Aidan playing this fall.
he is anti-science, his motives are politically suspect, and any evidence he relies on is anecdotal.
we must continue to hold the country hostage to continue the pious moral posturing, we simply must.
It’s not a question of open or closed. I’m all in favor of opening. But I think extreme measures should be in place. No gatherings should be occurring. It’s making me sick to see people gathering in crowds like this virus doesn’t even exist. Maybe football is appropriate to play, but there better be 10k or less (0?) fans in the stands. Reasonable Social distsncing must be in place for at least till next summer.
Social distancing until next summer is not responsible behavior. It's over the top radicalism. IF the virus continues to dominate health and well-being starting this summer, through the fall, into winter and flu season, into next spring...you may have a point.
It's not even June...it's a virus with limited understanding. Mapping lockdown for twelve more months is absurd. React rather than predict. And I'll go so far as to say Dr. Hutchinson has some bias as a former football player and father of a football player. I agree with his sentiment but he doesn't know any more than any other medical doc beyond his own ER experience still far more than me without a doubt.
He knows how well equipped the hospital is to handle another outbreak. And taxing the healthcare system to the breaking point was a huge concern at the outset.
I'll take a doctor's opinion on the matter over an attorney's all day, every day.
He also said that people must wear masks and practice social distancing.
But many people won't. And some of them will be infected, not know it, and continue spreading it.
hatter, agreed on #1, and while i don't know that 'many' people will fail to follow those guidelines, certainly some will - but they will spread it to the others like themselves. folks like you who are being careful will be fine. wear your mask, wash your hands, keep trips and gatherings to a minimum, no nursing homes, etc., just like dr. hutchinson intimates.
XM, you have to have read by now that the mask prevents the one with the virus from spreading it and does little to protect the wearer from contracting the virus. Your statement that only like people (those not wearing masks) will share it among themselves is incorrect. And Dr Hutchinson states plainly that wearing a mask and social distancing are key to reducing the spread of the virus.
and i am agreeing with what dr. H. said. where's the rub?
"...but they will spread it to the others like themselves." Primarily this.
If you agree that everyone should wear masks and social distance then I misunderstood your intended message.
damn XM
i read your 1st comment and immediately thought it was funny.
either people’s sarcasm meters are broken from quarantine or .... I guess I’m a psychopath?
if its any consolation doc, you're my kind of nut.
you mean most
I want football as much as the next person, but isn't it contradictory to say wear mask and practice social distancing, but 120 football players can practice together, sweat together, eat, drink, and shower together, and its OK? I just don't understand that reasoning.
Because they'll have very frequent testing.
The entire reason we wear masks and social distance is because we don't know who might have it so you assume anyone could. Far, far less likely that someone has it amongst a group that is being tested frequently (with the positives then immediately isolated).
Also, the players are extremely low risk compared to the average fan / adult.
The test isn't 100% accurate, and just because they don't get as sick as older people doesn't mean they are any less likely to get it and be asymptomatic. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for playing sports and watching sports and things getting back to somewhat normal, but statistically, some players will be carriers.
My wife's friend was on the fence about going to a funeral in Alabama but common sense prevailed and she stayed in Michigan. Turns out one of her dipshit cousins has Covid, attended the funeral, but refuses to tell anyone who was also at the funeral that she knew she was positive when she was there. That includes her parents.
I guess there is some stigma attached to telling people you are infected until after you end up in the hospital. My fear is there are plenty more dumbasses out there where that one came from. I don't need them killing my parents.
I "attended" an online funeral in mid-March for my friend/neighbor... I was very impressed with everything about the service and would highly recommend it as 'an add'l option' during lockdown and non-lockdown times for those that cannot travel to the service...the only rub is that you cannot express your condolences and support to the family 'in person', but could using other means.
30 days prior to the online funeral service, I attended a 'live service' for my mother - its depressing that my mother died (cancer), but the silver-lining was it happened pre-lockdown so we were able to physically support one another.
I share your concern, Chalky. People come into work with the flu all the time. And a significant number of people think covid is "just the flu". I could easily see people still going out in public, especially if their symptoms are mild.
That's different, most people have Flu antibodies. If you feel sick right now you should stay home as much as possible, social distance and wear a mask if you go in public.
As a matter of fact my wife and I feel under the weather a bit right now, and despite my opposition to wearing a mask when healthy, we will darn well be doing so if we go anywhere feeling like this.
And this is the crux of the problem. People who are silent carriers don’t care who they infect or take out by passing the virus along. I want football and normalcy as much as anyone, but not at the expense of another 100k+ fatalities.
The science on asymptomatic transmission, always sketchy, is becoming increasingly questionable. The NIH cited a recent study of 450 people which suggested there was weak evidence of same: .https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7219423/
I'm wearing a mask in public places to calm others down and will continue to do so but don't have any particular illusions that it helps anything.
Or one could cite a recent CDC study that says:
“Recent epidemiologic, virologic, and modeling reports support the possibility of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) transmission from persons who are presymptomatic (SARS-CoV-2 detected before symptom onset) or asymptomatic (SARS-CoV-2 detected but symptoms never develop). SARS-CoV-2 transmission in the absence of symptoms reinforces the value of measures that prevent the spread of SARS-CoV-2 by infected persons who may not exhibit illness despite being infectious. Critical knowledge gaps include the relative incidence of asymptomatic and symptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection, the public health interventions that prevent asymptomatic transmission, and the question of whether asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection confers protective immunity.“
at this point once you added modeling...it lost all credibility. Stick to your public policy job.
I'll take a doctor's opinion on the matter over an attorney's all day, every day.
Our Sopwith is an attorney. His opinion has been well-received here. Probably because he earned and applied a PhD in microbiology in addition to the JD. He's not alone on this site holding both an advanced STEM degree and a law license combined with industry experience. So there's that.
oh readyourguard I'm agreeing with Hutchinson, and I hold his experience in much higher regard than a public policy maker, talking heads at a poitical podium or pretty much anyone else making predictions. I guess my actual point was...he's a doctor, he's seeing what's in front of him, and he's probably going to have some bias as a parent and former player. Never did I intend to question his knowledge or background. It was more a perspective of so much nobody knows.
Based on what data? The Stanford doctors were correct, all the others incorrect. The mortality rate is 0.26%...it's 0.1% when nursing home deaths are removed...based on CDC's report.
Do you even know where social distancing came from?
I find it funny how you say youre sick of seeing people in groups yet the next sentence you say youre fine with 10,000 fans in a stadium to watch football
* bites lower lip to restrain from making a joke about a boat launch*
I think Sag Nasty owes me an apology.
For what?
So I just heard a funny Gretchen story FWIW. I believe the person who told me this. They are on their way to this place as I write this.
Gretchen’s husband, a Dentist with a different last name, calls up to a marina in Traverse City to get their boat out this weekend.
The guy at the marina says, “sorry the shutdown has us behind and the soonest we can have your boat out is 2-3 weeks.”
Hubby says,”2-3 weeks, would it be 2-3 weeks if it were for the governor?“
Marina guy says, “especially if it were for the fucking governor.”

IKR...I mean we have never seen examples of our politicians making hypocritically poor PR moves.
Well I suppose we have to wait at least 2-3 weeks now to find out.
Uh ok. I apologize. And it was dumb of her husband to do such a thing. But at least she owned it.
You sure did hang onto that one for a long time. So much has happened since then I completely forgot about it.
Owned it? Cmon dude her staff flat out lied about it and then her solution is to say “it was a joke”.
All this after she lectures the people of Michigan not to travel up North and put people at risk? But hubby was “raking leaves”. And wanting the boat out out to rake leaves?
Thats pathetic.
Her husband asked to get the boat out. It was dumb.
“To be honest, I wasn’t laughing either when it was relayed to me. Because I knew how it would be perceived. He regrets it. I wish it wouldn’t have happened. And that’s really all we have to say about it,"
I would say she owned it with that statement.
Fucking tool
I apologize because I wrongfully assumed it was just a joke, even thought I could envision the governor and her husband doing something like that.
Karen husbands gonna Karen husband.
You really need to stop believing (and then repeating) everything Foxnews says.
I'm not a republican, and I first read this news from former Packer/Lion TJ Lang on Twitter, followed by detnews and MLive, but go off.
Umm, I wasn’t replying to you. I’ll get negged anyway, but I honesty have no idea what your comment was about.
i think it was for me. would it help if i told you i haven't watched fox news in probably close to a decade, and at the same time would probably see as much of CNN? i know you were just being snarky, but think about it for a minute.
the guy has the chops to make the statements he's making. he's got the first hand knowledge having worked in one of the 3 'hottest' spots in our country. he is saying that we need to open up, its not a zero sum game in that other illnesses are going untreated, and to be careful. i think most people agree with that. don't you?
Xtra, such straw man statements are below you. I don’t think anyone is saying anything like that.
oh come on commie, i was having a little tongue-in-cheek fun with what i wrote, but a veritable boatload of people have used those memes here over and over and over again. i wrote a month ago that no amount of proof or approval is good enough for a certain amount of our fellow fans who simply enjoy the fear porn way too much. and to put a serious note on all of this, i agree with what the doctor said: open up, be careful, and its not a zero-sum game, we are making others suffer and die because of overdoing the important measures we should take. i am no longer willing to trade young lives and development for older lives (maybe like you and me?) - quarantine the elderly and the compromised, not the healthy. it has got to end to a significant degree.
Xtra. Bullshit, you knew what you were doing. You through down the troll marker. I get it, we will open more and see what happens.
edit. I think orders are and were dumb after 5/1. The Gov communicated badly and wasted political capital. However, the fact remains that we have had a vast failure on the federal level to set standards and testing. A better national program would have helped the states out
commie we've had two months of threads where those types of statements were used i would guess maybe 1,000 times to refute, deflect, abuse or otherwise disagree with any type of good news. the threads are legion, as are the comments i reference. condescending, emotional, condemning, arrogant, and all manner of incivility that on-line communities suffer from where they would never dare address a stranger like that in person.
i understand and honor those that are worried about venturing out. however, i am not willing to sacrifice the nation's children and young people any more - they need to get out. the worried and the elderly need to stay home-stay safe, and people like you and me need to do our best to make that feasible for them.
Hey man, me again. I don't want you to think I am picking on you. To the contrary, I actually respect your normally respectful and rational discourse. Which is why I engage with you and not others who have espoused the same/similar views.
That having been said, where is the evidence of the impact of the stay at home orders on child development? I see people positing this argument but have not seen any evidence supporting it. I work in education as a school social worker, and while my colleagues have expressed concerns about the impact of everything going on (a pandemic, loss of jobs, economic factors, etc) I have not seen any studies demonstrating the impact that peopleare suggesting exists. I will go further to say that creating such a study that is able to tease out the impact of living in a society deeply affected by a medical crisis from the impact of the orders related to said crisis is impossible. Are kids suffering? Yes. What are the primary causal factors? Myriad.
are you asking where are the studies about child development during the pandemic that have been done while such studies have been prohibited during the pandemic? that can't be what you are asking.
but maybe i understand your last statements, the one that says kids are suffering and the causes are 'myriad'. right. wouldn't you think the pandemic put into effect or exacerbated all or nearly all of those causes. isolation. child abuse. educational deficits growing. physical development vis-a-vis things like athletics, gym classes, etc. delayed. suicides are up.
i take you at your word re: school social worker. wonderful. have you been able to administer the services you normally do as well as you would pre-pandemic? do you worry about your contacts with kids that you don't even get to chat with in the halls or between classes, who are now left with one or another parent who has a host of their own issues? i mean, let me ask you, what do you think of whats in store for those kids who have been cut off from probably almost all of the great things you and others in your system do for them?
