Fleck or Harbaugh

The question that must be asked, is PJ Fleck a better COLLEGE coach that Harbaugh.  Legit question considering what both coaches have so far accomplished given the tools they have been given.  It is categorically unquestionable PJ has surpassed JH in his time at Univ Minn., given the respective resources available...i hate Fleck's politics but think he is a better coach...

Unquestionable? Get the fuck out of here. Minnesota beat an overrated Penn State team while being ranked #17 in the country. Their best win before that was against Illinois.

Stanford Harbaugh is better than Fleck. Michigan Harbaugh is not. I think most of what people are frustrated about is looking so disjointed in big games. The WR drops and deciding to kick a 58 yard field goal against psu, running the ball under 1 minute at the end of the 1st half vs indiana etc. At Michigan with all of the resources that you have you shouldnt be struggling to get any sort of defensive tackle or corner to commit to you 5 years in.

PJ Fleck's accomplishments at Minnesota:

2017: 5-7, 0-2 against ranked teams

2018: 7-6, 0-1 against ranked teams

2019: 9-0, 1-0 against ranked teams

It's not bad, exactly, but he's had exactly one real good day, and that was today.  I know we're frustrated with Harbaugh's record against OSU, but he's smacked around Penn State more than once, as well as a number of other ranked teams.  Don't see how you compare them at this point.

Harbaugh all day every day.  If Michigan had PSU at home like Minny did, Michigan wins by two scores minimum.  Home Harbaugh >> away Harbaugh.  I was totally geeked about Minnesota's win today because I hate PSU.  But if I had to make a bet for next week, I think Iowa wins.  And I think Wisconsin runs over them on Nov. 30.  Great season for Minnesota standards though.

Minnesota has now played...one team in the SP+ top 50 and just barely held on at home to beat PSU.  I think Fleck is a good coach, but one of his greatest strengths seems to be capitalizing on opportunities that may or may not be sustainable.  Like, his best year at WMU they had the #2 TO margin in the country, and this year they're in the top-20.  They'll go to Iowa next weekend and that'll tell us a lot about how sustainable this success is; my guess is they come back to earth a bit even though Iowa is pretty meh.

It will perhaps shock you to learn that Michigan's TO margin under Harbaugh has been

  • 2019 - 57th (.11), and at one point they were the worst team in the country in TO margin
  • 2018 - 38th (.38)
  • 2017 - 90th (-0.31)
  • 2016 - 24th (0.54)
  • 2015 - 92nd (-0.31)

So of course, Jim Harbaugh and co. have remembered, forgotten, re-remembered, then forgot, then sorta stumbled into the idea of ball security and turnover generation since he's been at Michigan.  Illinois is currently #2 in the country because they have picked up 26 TOs this year versus 14 lost, while last year they gained 20 but turned over 24.  Two years ago they had 26 TOs but only picked up 19.  It must be because Lovie Smith only now discovered the secret to holding onto the ball and getting from others in his beard and not, you know, semi-random chance that's hard to predict and probably isn't something you want to rely on repeating year-to-year.

My opinion: Everyone who talks up Fleck right now as the 2nd coming of Nick Saban or Urban Meyer is not just quite ignorant about how college football works, but they should just go ahead buy a Minnesota shirt or something. Or whatever team Fleck will be at next, be it FSU or USC or what else.

I mean honestly I think Michigan beats Penn State at home as well, but you also have to compare Minnesota resources to Michigan resources. He's doing an excellent job with what he has to work with. We would be in a dogfight with Minnesota if we played them.

What a dumbfuck post.

Comparing the dude who has given us our best records in YEARS to the dude who went 5-7 and 7-6 his first two years in one of the worst divisions in the power 5. This fan base man.

Good Gotham. This self righteous black and white, political demonization bullshit is seriously effing tired. If you're so convinced that there's NO good reason to vote one way or another other than the fact that you're a either a skinhead or a commie, you're doing it way, way wrong.

He's a football coach, not your senator.

Honestly there are a lot of better coaches than Harbaugh ...Lots of coaches have done more with less ..You should know by now in the mgo community Harbaugh is the greatest thing since Bo and should not be questioned

The important takeaway is to schedule cream puffs and play your tough games at home so you get a great record like Minnesota.
