Motels near The Big House?
We are coming down to AA for the MSU game and have decided to make a weekend of it. We usually get to 2-3 games per season and drive down in the morning and drive back home after the game. This time it will be just my wife & I so we want to make a fun time of it for ourselves, which would include a big win against MSU on Saturday afternoon.
Anyone have any recommendations for a good motel that’s semi close to the Stadium yet within decent driving distance to some of the shopping malls on the East side of the state for our day on Friday? Thanks!

Um, thanks. I don’t even know you. ?

My wife just got back in town tonight. I wish you had told me sooner.

Hmmm...sexy times at Darker Blue's place then?
October 30th, 2019 at 10:32 PM ^
I was about to offer you my extra bed/bath on my first floor, but my wife said she’s not sure she’s ready for that. As opposed to Darker Blue you have met me. I gave your grandkids some M swag at the Rutgers game. Maybe another season.

Scanner - oh wow - wish I had gotten your contact info. I followed up that thread about the Rutgers game with how it turned out. You’ll never know what a blessing you were to that young autistic guy our grandkids took along. Could not thank you enough! You made our day and especially his! Blessings to you & your family. Thanks for being the epitome of what it is to be a M fan!

I’m so confused now.

Do you mind paying extra for clean sheets?

Just so they are clean when we arrive!

Motel? Like one with exterior corridors and prostitutes hanging out all over the place?
I'm guessing anything this close to MSU weekend is already pretty damn booked. Maybe there will be some last minute AirBnb listings?
October 30th, 2019 at 8:52 PM ^
Yup... I’ll check that out if I can’t find a motel by tomorrow.

motels and msu just go together

You're assuming Sparties will still be watching their team in three weeks. This could end up like the Bobby Williams game and most of them won't know about it until we tell them. Which if course, we will.

Holiday Inn Express on Zeeb Rd. It's brand new, right off the express way (I mean literally you can flash drivers on I-94 from your room if you want to), close to Dexter, which is by far the best town in Washtenaw County, and also right next door to Metzger's German Restaurant.
October 30th, 2019 at 8:53 PM ^
Thanks Brutus. I’ll look right now.
October 30th, 2019 at 8:54 PM ^
Oh there's also a really nice party store next to Metzger's if you need some craft beer or fancy scotch for your tailgate.
October 30th, 2019 at 9:37 PM ^
I'm starting to think you're the manager of the motel and the party store
October 31st, 2019 at 6:35 AM ^
And if so, you are my new best friend.
October 30th, 2019 at 9:48 PM ^
"Party store"! Man that phrase brings back memories. Haven't heard it used that way since I left Ann Arbor 20 years ago. Here a party store is where you buy confetti and mylar balloons.
October 30th, 2019 at 10:17 PM ^
Yeah, and you can buy booze at them, like...24 hours a day. As an east coast person, the ability to enter a liquor store at 3 or 4 in the morning and get anything you want and desire was a shock. And often the last thing I remembered before the blackout.

That's... suspiciously specific...

"I mean literally you can flash drivers on I-94 from your room if you want to"
Had to read that twice. First pass I think you are shining a flashlight at the trucks. Second reading, I figure out what you meant.
I'm very slow some days.

Dairy Queen closed for the year yesterday, but the Dexter Cider Mill and the A & W drive in now open all year make it #1. Flashing optional.

Was Buscemi just told he was going to be stuffed in a chipper?

I had a similar reaction.
OP, nothing personal, but do you know how to search the WWW? We're not discussing "best Michelin 1-star restaurant in San Francisco" here. Google / Yelp / Trip Advisor would make more sense than MGoBlog.
I'd sooner solicit reviews on Washtenaw Avenue gas stations.
October 30th, 2019 at 9:28 PM ^
Hey Jasper, rather than solicit opinions from TA, I thought it would be good to hear from Mgo members. Hope I didn’t ruin your day.

Avatar checks out. I am guessing you won’t let OP sleep on your porch or your front lawn.

Well, as long as you brought it up, the BP on Washtenaw & Huron Pkwy has a really good price today, but I have found the Circle K at Stadium & Packard is consistently the best bet. It's near enough to Washtenaw to mention in this review. I hope this helps.

He’s gone home. His House of Horrors was The Big House.

Motels are in Ypsilanti, Hotels are in Ann Arbor. You may want to check out hotels in the Dexter, Saline, or Chelsea area. Look fast b/c many others will be reserving rooms for that weekend.
Are you coming in from US-23 or I-94?
October 30th, 2019 at 8:54 PM ^
Thanks AA! We’ll be coming from the west on 94.

LaQuinta on Haggerty just south of Ford Road in Canton. Many M fans stay there. Lots of places to eat nearby. Cost will not break the bank. 15-20 minutes from the stadium.
Have fun.
October 30th, 2019 at 9:02 PM ^
Thanks VA... we’ll check that out.
October 30th, 2019 at 8:54 PM ^
"Semi-close to the stadium" and "within decent driving distance to shopping malls on the east side of the state" probably doesn't exist, since you're looking at about a 60-mile stretch between those two things.
If you clarify what you mean by "shopping malls on the East side of the state," more folks will probably be able to help.
October 30th, 2019 at 9:02 PM ^
It rather depends on the sort of shopping you're looking for - Twelve Oaks is in Novi, near several decent hotels, and probably a 40-ish minute drive from Ann Arbor. Somerset in Troy is far more posh but a good hour from Ann Arbor. Westland and Southland Malls are of course in western Wayne County, but they aren't quite shopping meccas, but they are in the middle of much more affordable lodging. The compromise - Canton - has been mentioned already, as you get Ikea and a rather impressive selection of stores along the Ford Road corridor, albeit mostly chain stores.
October 30th, 2019 at 9:11 PM ^
Wow... very helpful LSA... Thanks so much!
October 31st, 2019 at 8:44 AM ^
I've opted for the Novi-Northville-Plymouth area for game weekend hotels in recent years. They are typically very reasonable compared to the massively inflated rates in Ann Arbor and it's still only a short drive into Ann Arbor.

Sorry for vagueness of my post. We are just not that familiar with the East side. The furthest East we’ve ever been has been AA. Being that close to Detroit I was thinking there would be lots of malls nea4by.

If you're looking for shopping you might want to look even further north at Great Lakes Crossing or even Birch Run.
