The Athletic article on Beilein as a JV coach
Brendan Quinn over at The Athletic put out a pretty cool story about Beilein's first season as a coach - as a 22 year old JV coach at his high school alma mater. It was evident way back then he was a great teacher and communicator, and awesome that he kept his own detailed stats. Also very cool that the players from that first team he coached some 40 plus years ago stay in touch with him and attend a game together every year. Not that we needed it, but just further proof that JB is a great guy doing it for the right reasons. Well worth the read IMO.

The best part of the article was this picture of Coach Beilein from 1976, making him either 22 or 23 at the time.

This soooo needs to be one of those blown up signs in the crowd.

Looks like he was a sub-loving party animal even as a young lad.

Anyway to sneak a smaller version of this into the banner?

If he didn't coach basketball, he could have been a singer.

Class act, we're lucky to call him our coach!
Great coach and an even better person.

Super hire, super developer, super coach and a great man for Michigan.
Go Blue and beat the Nittany Lions tonight!
Thank God Bill Martin hired him!
Thank goodness many did not listen to the hue and cry to fire John in 2017.

I can't believe that thread was posted right around 2 years ago (with a whole lot of agreement from the board). Crazy how things turned around right after that OP.
Glad I wasn't able to find a knee-jerk comment from myself in there lol

....and this is why I am glad that programs really don't listen to fans when it comes to day-to-day operations generally. If our programs listened to this blog, all of our programs would be tire fires and we'd be bitching about tire fires that were our fault.

It's tough to make predictions, especially about the future.

I was a freshman in high school myself then; admiring that hair!

I would have had such a crush on him! Just the right length of sideburns...

Is anyone else saddened by that "alot" in there?

I think there is enough space in there to be seen as two words. I give him a pass on this accusation

He didn't use white out either!! Did that sadden you?
February 12th, 2019 at 6:05 PM ^
I found out today that the inventor of WhiteOut was Bette Nesmith Graham, the mother of one of the Monkees, Michael.

Also, he used an index card instead of formal stationery!

Not disappointed. This is a handwritten note where the only sloppiness was spacing. I saw no typos at ail.

Except for "I'm am"

You saw a typo on the handwritten index card? You are special.

It could have used better formatting. Bullet points.
Otherwise, I heart Coach Beilein.

I have relatives in Newfane believe it or not. Always bizarre to me when I'm there that Beilein really is from there. Pretty cool that one of the greatest D1 coaches ever is from that tiny little town

Article is paywalled so I couldn't read it. Was this when Beilein was an assistant coach? I'm not sure if he ever was one or not.
