Gameday and early games open thread
College Gameday is at Evanston today for Northwestern v. Ohio State at 8 PM on ABC tonight
It looks like the Northwestern crowd is up and into this game, which should lead to a great atmosphere tonight.
Some highlight-ish games for the noon slate:
MSU v. Iowa - 12 PM on Espn 2
- Iowa looks to be vastly improved from last year and their defense should be enough to stall the MSU offense. The question is whether Rudock can have time in the pocket to find his tight ends.
Maryland (25) v. FSU (8) on Espn
- Is Jameis Winston for real? Maryland has not yet played a good team and could be used to wipe the floor. On the other hand, Florida State is seemingly slow to start and struggled defensively against Boston College and Nevada to start that game.
Illinois v. Nebraska on Espn U
- Nebraska's defense always seems to turn a corner midseason... is this the game where they do that? If not, it's going to be a long day for the Huskers as Scheelhasse in Cubit's offense seems to have found a groove and the Illinois defense can probably do enough to stall the Huskers.

Cook has done ok today. He is not great but for a RS sophomore on the road he is doing fine. Defense went into tailspin after those 2 injuries and the dumb penalties pile up as usual.

Apparently unnecessary roughness includes idiotic penalties. Can't have one without the other in EL.
October 5th, 2013 at 1:41 PM ^
At some point, I don't think we can even call them "dumb" penalties. They're what MSU does. They're a dirty team that tries to throw opposing players off their game with dirty tactics like hitting after the whistle and twisting in the pile, knowing that the referees will never call everything.
October 5th, 2013 at 2:47 PM ^
the refs cannot call every penalty without destroying the game, and they know it. Their style is a challenge to the refs. At very least, they can count on it bringing them one or two wins a season, especially in East Lansing. I'm convinced that conscious thought goes into this.

The Noles are starting to regain their late 90's dominant form.

So now every few years when they play ND under the new "chicken schedule" the Noles can pound the irish...

WTF is Alabama doing scheduling Georgia State?

Well, there have only been ten missed 3rd down conversions, but we have an entire half yet to reach the O/U line of 27 chosen earlier.
The Spartans have 210 yards of offense at the half, and while the Hawkeyes only have 160 yards to their credit, it seems like Rudock found his mojo - 12 for 15, 143 yards passing, 2 TDs, 1 INT and 9.5 YPA, but almost 12 yards per completion.

Coach Narduzzi, 60 minutes of unnecessary roughness, etc. etc.
IMHO Narduzzi is like Mattison but with less disciplined players and championship rings. He'll be a solid HC at UConn though.

If i were to judge by that interview, Braxton miller cannot read a defense, and he does not have a progression to go thru

Stop calling them Michigan you dumb woman

Cook improving. He is still wildly inaccurate from time to time but he has some nice reads today and again, for a RS sophomore, he is doing fine. By the time we get to November he will be a test for UM defense since our pass rush is akin to Iowa (i.e. not much) and when he has that much time, he does ok.
MSU has actually dominated this game for all but 7 minutes. Will be interesting to see if MSU defense is back to form in 2nd half or Iowa can continue momentum.

Iowa's defense stinks.

Navy and MICHIGAN!

If Jake Ryan dresses today, he'll probably enter the game for a few snaps.

So I guess that's a no go. I heard he took snaps for game plan install. MT @Mark__Snyder From dress list: ... Jake Ryan is not dressed today

Iowa DL gets zero pass rush. Cook can make a cup of coffee back there most plays.
October 5th, 2013 at 2:11 PM ^
If I have been counting correctly, we're closing in on ten punts in this game (Sadler had #9 there, think) and a combined 400 yards punting for the game, which might even be below initial expectations for this game.

I absolutely hate that damn FG range line. Sure, go ahead and put it up on a 4th Q drive to win/tie the game with a FG, but all the time?
October 5th, 2013 at 2:31 PM ^
A fake punt is only "perfect timing" when it works, Joey Galloway.

Jesus H Christ...don't people know this shit about Dantoio and his fucking fakes

October 5th, 2013 at 2:32 PM ^
Well, that was rather unexpected. Michigan State goes for the fake punt, gets it, then goes wildcat with Langford taking the snap. If anyone was confused, clearly Bollman does not have much input on the playcalling.
October 5th, 2013 at 2:33 PM ^
wow Iowa OL was being held the entire length of this last play
October 5th, 2013 at 2:33 PM ^
Am I the only one watching our next two opponents play? Switching around some, but the PSU/IU game has actually been fairly entertaining. Hard to believe we can't contain the PSU offense and scorch the IU defense, but you know... insert all the stuff about the past couple games.
October 5th, 2013 at 2:36 PM ^
I'm watching the PSU game a bit. All I've picked up is that Mattison is going to mess with Hackenburg's head big time. Henne was better as a frosh (even without Braylon).

October 5th, 2013 at 2:43 PM ^
Shilique Calhoun has also been Shilique Coleman too. Apparently, people are changing names within the game, far better than the normal turnaround on the process.
October 5th, 2013 at 2:39 PM ^
Well obviously this MSU/Iowa game is a win-win for Michigan regarding the outcome, but we still want and need MSU to lose, as they are the greater threat compared to Iowa. Iowa's offense is as bad as MSU's though and I just can't see their winning this game.
October 5th, 2013 at 2:40 PM ^
ESPN blew the wad a bit early on that Edsall spotlight piece during game day. So much for that storyline.
