The problem is its hard to get loud for a game like this because in the back of your mind you remember this is Akron, and anything good should be expected, and why should you betting excited for eeking out a win against Akron?
September 15th, 2013 at 8:45 AM ^
Why? Because GA doesn't so anything to address the root of the problem, which are people that care nothing about football buying season tickets so they can tailgate
September 14th, 2013 at 10:29 PM ^
Hey, all you students in the back! Stand up! Everybody up! Show those blue hairs!

The student section was fuller when Rich Rod was in charge AMIRITE?

It was a smaller portion of the Stadium. There were fewer student tickets sold in those days. I can't remember a worse kickoff student-attendance than today's game.
Thanks for your question and have a nice day!

You can scoff at the ''this generation isn't as dedicated'' stuff but it's 100 percent true. And I'm a part of it (not a student but I wouldn't miss any Michigan game unless it's something EXTREMELY important (cousin's wedding next year is on homecoming...dammit). I weep for the future of Michigan Stadium with the combined effort of Dave Brandon pissing everyone off and the lack of dedication from this generation.
September 14th, 2013 at 10:57 PM ^
I'd close that first parenthesis before continuing to bitch about the next generation...
September 14th, 2013 at 11:06 PM ^
your claim is all heresay. Is it not possible that a fewer percentage of the students bought tickets in the past? These days, the way they promote it during high school visits, orientation, etc. they practically require that everyone buys tickets - even those who have no interest in football whatsoever.
September 14th, 2013 at 10:31 PM ^
Easy solution.
Sell alcohol at the games. They used to back in the day. For a game like today, its like you party for three hours and then going to church. The lines, the rules, singing. Games should be raucuous, not soul crushing.
September 14th, 2013 at 10:34 PM ^
Honestly I think alcohol may be one of the only solutions.
September 14th, 2013 at 10:34 PM ^
Yeah that's definitely gonna happen.
September 14th, 2013 at 10:40 PM ^
They used to sell alcohol at Michigan football games?
"[B]ack in the day"?
Uh, what day was that? Before, uh, Prohibition?

Hah you named like the three worst fanbases as far as conducting themselves. Students and adults are already showing up to the game plenty loaded, I have rarely had a problem. And vulgarity has ALWAYS been part of the experience, especially in the student section.
September 15th, 2013 at 12:11 AM ^
I've seen plenty poor behavior at Lions games too.
And selling alcohol at UM games is a sure fire way to ruin the whole thing, IMO. I was a student too and don't recall problems w/vulgarity (not including hockey chants).
September 14th, 2013 at 10:49 PM ^
You can't sell alcohol at University-owned stadiums. Which is why you could drink at the Metrodome, but not at Minny's new stadium.
And nothing says dumpster fire game management situations like selling beer at a game with 10,000 underage kids trying to pass their fake ID's at the concession stands. You could go Village Corner (RIP) rules, tack up the fake ID's, and wallpaper the outside of the scoreboards at each of the stadium each season.
September 14th, 2013 at 10:51 PM ^
You can most definitely drink at Minnesotas new stadium
September 14th, 2013 at 11:32 PM ^
They are serving alcohol at the Glass Bowl in Toledo this year. Tonight may be the first game with the new policy, actually. Not a comparison for Michigan Stadium, just pointing out in regards to the "university owned" bit.

even if brandon cuts student tickets, it is not like dynamic pricing will allow more fans to attend.

And there are people paying just to be on a waiting list and these twits are doing this shit.
I don't care if you're playing Ann Arbor Pioneer, you get your ass in the stands. The classes before you filled the stands for games against Rice and Long Beach State!
Pisses me off. Fuck this whole day.

they can get tickets to games vs. Akron. The student ticket allotment did not deprive anyone of a ticket for this game who wanted to go. In any case, the system would probably work a lot better if student ticket packages weren't all or nothing.

A lot of factors go into what time a game is.
September 14th, 2013 at 10:35 PM ^
are all "dynamic seating" non-student seats, and they're empty too. Those late-arriving students weren't the only ones who didn't feel like going.
I really hope none of the people complaining about the students not showing up live in southeast Michigan, because if so, you could have easily made it to this game yourself.
September 15th, 2013 at 12:48 PM ^
It is the upper portions of Sections 33 and 34 that are sold as single-game dynamic pricing tickets, right? Not 28, 29 and 30.
Moreover, the dynamic pricing tickets may not have been sold; I don't know. Big difference between empty seats having not been sold, and season ticket-holding students not showing up.

Just a thought but what would be the downside of banning entering the stadium after a pre-determined time. Say something like 10 minutes into the 1st quarter? So maybe in real time 20-25 minutes after game start. i.e. be there by 12:25 PM or you can't come at all? I am picking an arbitrary time, maybe it should be 12:15 PM or whatever but is there a downside I am missing to that? It would encourage students to be in the stadium at worse halfway through the 1st quarter... doesnt seem punitive.
September 14th, 2013 at 10:45 PM ^
That would discouge many from coming at all.
September 14th, 2013 at 10:38 PM ^
High Holy Days, Akron, noon start, unhappiness with wasting time in line at previous games all seem like valid reasons for the student section to filll slowly. It did look a lot more full by the 2nd quarter. On the other hand, the east side club level seats looked to be more than half empty the entire game. Why isn't anyone upset that the folks shelling out those kind of bucks can't be bothered to show up at all?
September 14th, 2013 at 10:41 PM ^
Welcome to a shot of the future for upcoming home schedules getting worse with maryland and rutgers instead of ND and other Big Ten teams

September 14th, 2013 at 10:59 PM ^
Yeah, its funny how dynamic pricing is pretty convienent when the market value is way above face value, but of course when you schedule games no one wants to go to and the market value falls way below face value, face value pricing works just fine for the AD.
September 14th, 2013 at 11:56 PM ^
They want to have it both ways. But scalpers don't always make the big bucks. Sometimes they have to eat the tickets and lose money.
The AD wants all the profit with none of the risk. This works great on paper. In real life, people stay home.
September 14th, 2013 at 10:54 PM ^
I'm a senior and I have never missed a game. Left quite a few early but never missed one. Having said that, this response is embarassing. It is not the responsibility of students to attend football games, it is their choice. A large percentage of the students who attend games are Jewish... today was a Jewish Holiday. There was a major music festival 30 minutes away that several students attended. We were playing a team with a 3-33 record the past three years the week after a major game. A general admission policy that is operated so poorly that students who waited for over three hours before the game enjoyed a similar wait once they were allowed in made a borderline game a pass for many. There are things in life that are embarassing, disgraceful etc., but some late arriving students does not qualify. It's not why we played why we did. Nobody gives a shit. Get a life.
September 15th, 2013 at 12:18 AM ^
Actually, there are a lot of people who care that the students come on time - including the players and coaches on the team. It hurts our homefield advantage to not have students there when we kick off.
If you've bought tickets, make the effort to get there to cheer your classmates playing on the field. A lot of guys on the team were really excited to see all the students there early for the CMU and ND games - it means a lot to them.
September 14th, 2013 at 11:03 PM ^
I understand that,, and am actually on the student's side here, but I think the problem most people are complaining about here is that by the end of the half, the student section was pretty close to full, meaning students showed up, they just didnt show up on time. I'm guessing the Jewish holiday didnt make anyone an hour late.
September 14th, 2013 at 11:08 PM ^
fair, but the GA policy either motivated students to show up early, or in the case of a game like Akron, causes them to say fuck it well show up when we dont have to deal with it. but by bigger point is that when the students arrive for a game against akron should not be the concern of a bunch of grown men (and women).
September 15th, 2013 at 12:03 AM ^
You have a good point about GA. It either makes people show up early: the diehards that want to sit up front, or it makes people show up late: the people who know they are not going to get a prime seat anyway so they just wait until everything clears out. It's lousy for getting everybody to show up on time.

That they've scrubbed away all that goodwill and much of their paying fanbase is stunning. Every major football program should be worried about it.
September 15th, 2013 at 12:46 AM ^
Well... They've had five straight seasons of 6+ losses... Doesn't that scrub away goodwill, too?
