If I were on campus and not a senior, I would love GA. I can drink any day of the week, but I only get to go to a game on Saturday.

Turnstiles and queues.
August 30th, 2013 at 12:00 PM ^
maybe if it was a general "let everyone in whenever" where you show up and walk in to wherever there is seating, I wouldn't mind but this whole business with the queue and wristbands is terrible.
And this is coming from a senior who pretty much never pre-gamed last year, was always in the stands by 20 minutes before the game, and has never missed a game and only left early once.
In the past I knew I could start walking down to the stadium 4o minutes before the game and be in my seat before the band took the field, and I could use the morning to get some crucial studying done. Now I am going to have to show up hours before hand just to get halfway decent spots.
This won't solve the sparseness of the upper levels of the student section, not with the way they've jacked up the prices from 26 dollars per ticket when I was a freshman to 40 dollars per ticket today. The people who only came because its a social event just didn't buy tickets this year, as we saw by the fact that the studen allotment didn't sell out.
Shrinking the student section would have been better. What we currently have just punishes those of us who have always been loyal fans, but don't have 4 hours to kill sitting in a queue on a saturday morning/early after noon on top of the 4 hours already dedicated to watching the game.

But wait to see how it plays out for a few weeks. UTL2 will be a nightmare line whether GA or not. But I wouldn't be surprised if the GA queue isn't that bad; remember, this was instituted in large part because of the wide swathe of disinterested students who would roll up to their top 20 row seats late in the 2nd quarter. I'm not sure those students are going to alter their behavior that much just to avoid sitting in row 60. I could obviously be wrong, and while it likely won't work to your benefit as a senior, it will work to the benefit of the freshmen/sophomores who are like you/me.
I do agree that it won't change the empty back row problem, but this might be the first step towards shrinkage.

Only once in three years have I had any arguments with people about seating, and that was because drunk frat bros misread their ticket and thought we were in their seats. And I usually would jump up into rows 15-40 on a regular basis.

I bet a lot of people will though. Freshman with too much time on their hands, perhaps.
August 30th, 2013 at 1:04 PM ^
freshman with nothing better to do will be the bane of any busy upperclassman trying to get good seats... thanks Dave B. for flushing seniority norms down the toilet.
August 30th, 2013 at 12:54 PM ^
I guess what I'm most interested in with the GA is whether or not it actually creates a uniformly full student section. Will there be gaps when students decide to sit in a higher row instead of just filling in as close as they can get? Will there be gaps of seats in between groups? Basically, will it look like what your average lecture hall looks like, when people don't want to sit directly next to someone if they don't have to, and will leave rows empty to pick a more desireable spot?
It seems pretty likely to me this thing is going to look really patchy for the lesser games.

Rabble rabble GA rabble rabble.
There will be no lines unless you plan on showing up more than 90 minutes before kick. That's when they open the doors.
August 30th, 2013 at 1:37 PM ^
Another thing - do you really seriously think that 2000 + college students are going to line up on a Saturday morning of welcome week to stand around and do nothing?? Are you insane? I am going to go to the game at my normal time (1 hr before kickoff) and I expect to get seats in row 30ish, which is better than what I got as a senior.
August 30th, 2013 at 1:44 PM ^
This.
Students are extrapolating one poorly run experience in basketball (which is comparing apples and oranges) to football.
What you said is right on. The only people who willl be standing in line are those that want to be in the front 10 rows.
August 30th, 2013 at 2:54 PM ^
If so that's why your seats sucked. And please don't use the term "most seniors" unless you personally knew all 2500+ people from your graduating class.
"Do you really seriously think that 2000+ college students are going to line up on a Saturday morning of welcome week to stand around and do nothing??"

I did not get group tickets.. I would have gotten screwed worse if I did because groups with children of alumni that have donated lots of money get better seats so frats and sororities will base their groups off of that person and sit in the front, accordingly.

"because groups with children of alumni that have donated lots of money get better seats so frats and sororities will base their groups off of that person and sit in the front, accordingly."
That just is not even remotely true. Getting group tickets at UofM isn't like some conspiracy from the mediocre movie "The Skulls."
August 30th, 2013 at 11:43 PM ^
For what it's worth, I did get group tickets, was not part of some remarkable group of rich alumni offspring, and scored Row A (front row) tickets my sophomore year. Sometimes you're just lucky.
A year later we managed Row 25 with the same group. And you know what? Those seats were better. A lot of people do not realize just how little you can see from the field.

I am a student section usher. Please do not be dicks to us if you don't like the new rules. We didn't make them, we're just doing our jobs. Also I'm Chuck Fucking Norris and I'll round house kick your indignant, drunk ass all the way to the bye week if you give me any shit.

Why is that as a student you now have to prove your fandom by queueing separately from the normal fans? The entire stadium should be general admission seating - the blue hairs with seats on the 50-yard line have it too good - what makes them better fans that they aren't required to queue and prove their fandom like the students?
August 30th, 2013 at 7:36 PM ^
As a soon to be blue hair, who is the son of a blue hair, I'll tell you that 60+ years of season tickets, PSLs, and paying full price for tickets gives you the privilege of having your seat reserved.
