New 2014 bowl games: Bahamas Bowl and (unnamed) Boca Raton Bowl
Neither has a B1G tie in, but somewhat interesting CFB news nonetheless.
The Bahamas Bowl (pitting MAC vs. C-USA) doesn't sound like such a bad place for Western or Central to end up after a good season. Since the International Bowl in Toronto folded a few years back, this will be the only game ouside of the good ole' U S of A.
The as-of-now unnamed bowl game in Boca Raton, Florida will pit C-USA against an opponent from one of three conferences - MAC, Mountain West, or the brand new "Amurrican" Conference. Not as exciting as the Bahamas, but if I'm a C-USA player, I'm excited I may not have to go to Mobile or Boise.

Boca Raton isnt really a football town or a town that seems like it will put up with a younger crowd. I guess it's cool to have a bowl game close but Miami Gardens isnt really that far away for us Palm Beach people.

The stadium only seats 25k so it doesn't sound like you'll need to put up with too many of the young folk. Make sure you tell Morty Seinfeld so he doesn't get the condo board up in arms.

Maybe he was riffing on the deleted scenes segment on the Seinfeld DVD which showed Jerry Stiller screwing up saying "Del Boca Vista" in every possible combination you could imagine. Pretty funny stuff.

That just means lots of people will have grandparents to stay with when they come down for the bowl, right?

It's okay, we are a product of our environments, nothing you can do about it. I'm sorry to say that despite you being in your 20's or 30's, you probably will start suffering from liver spots and a 4:30 PM craving for the meatloaf sandwich at Shoney's within the next year or so.

That said, it's probably going to feature two crap teams, so 25k is plenty to watch FIU play New Mexico St.

Not the first "island bowl"
Before Cuba became communist, there was the Bacardi Bowl played in Havana.

Either server is doing odd things, or post was changed from one suggesting that the worst teams in the league should have to play a punishment bowl in Bangor Maine.
...the winning team is kidnapped at the end. The losing team just has to go home.
Tina Turner (Private Dancer) and Styx (Come Sail Away) are piped in throughout the game.
Instead of names on the jerseys, they are given non-inspiring titles like "Uninspiring" "Mediocrity" and "Butter4Hands".
The field is painted beige
The winning QB is taped for a commercial saying "I'm going to Trenton".

...I wish they'd bring back the Bacardi Rum Bowl. Sounds awesome. And since Cuba is off-limits maybe they could get a couple of "bowl banned" probation teams like OSU and USC to square off in it.
I'd also support a Bolivian Blow Bowl too.

Guess I don't feel so bad about playing Chicago College of Physicians & Surgeons and American Medical School back in 1904.

For some reason I thought the NCAA had imposed a moratorium against new bowl games. Maybe the bowl sponsors figure that if the NCAA won't enforce its rules against cheating, they won't enforce a bowl moratorium either?

For some reason, Thomas A. Robinson Stadium is exactly how I pictured a bowl matchup between the lower-tier picks in the C-USA and MAC...
August 20th, 2013 at 5:58 PM ^
...that looks awesome. Too bad Michigan couldn't play there. It'd be funny when livestock wanders onto the field and interrupts play.

I just hope the local retirees aren't charged admission if they want to walk on the track during the game. Seems like they ought to be grandfathered in, at the very least.

Never been, but it certainly looks that way in the picture. It seats only 25k, so I would imagine it feels like an outdoor version of a basketball arena. Actually would probably be a great place to watch a game with great sight lines...

I guess Wisner Stadium in Pontiac (former home of the neutral site Boys Bowl between Detroit Catholic Central and Birmingham Brother Rice) must have been booked. Capacities can't be all that much different!

That's going to cost a good amount of money for a MAC school to fly and house the football team, coaches and associated personnel to the Bahamas.

Because if there is one thing everyone has been complaining about the past 2 decades, it is the lack of bowls...

Sweet! Being an out of state student from Stuart, Fl who attends WMU, I'll go see the Bronco's row the boat down in the Bahamas or Boca during my winter break visiting home.
...that is, if they can even make a bowl game down there.
August 20th, 2013 at 6:37 PM ^
Can I ask what drew you from Florida to Western? No snark intended, just curious why you chose WMU over the rest of the pack....
August 20th, 2013 at 9:34 PM ^
As you can imagine, I get that asked a lot. There a quite a few reasons but the main reasons are because ALL of my family are WMU grads (extended family included) so of course they want me to go there. Also, I needed to get in-state residency so i can actually attend UM when I transfer there without my wallet hating me forever... Third of all, and im not taking anything away from South Florida but Michigan is as beautiful as any place there is, mix that along with the great midwestern core values of people around here, I definitely don't see why such a substatial amout of people would want to move away from here.... I mean besides the SUPER shitty winter months... ha i keeed i keeeed. Plenty to do in the ice aged months!

They better have the kickoff no later than 12 noon. Otherwise spectators might miss the Early Bird Special at The Sizzler down the street.

Let 'em kick me off the Board. I'm showing up at 6:00 in my new cadillac.

99% of college bowl games are useless. I can't wait for the day when this system comes crashing to the ground.
I may be waiting a while.
