OT-Urban Meyer claims that Henandez was held to same standard
Urban Meyer does not refute the reports that Hernandez failed drug test. But claims that he was held to same standard. Of course, we do not know what the standard was
Meyer texted to the paper. "Hernandez was held to the same drug testing policy as every other player."

The problem being that the standard Urban Meyer holds his players to is exceedingly low.
Only if you are a key starter.
I'm a bit tired of us all trying to link Urban to Hernandez's murder. Dude was probably going to murder people whether he was at Florida or West Alberta Tech
If Urban Meyer had kicked Hernandez off of the team, maybe he wouldn't have been in the position that allegedly resulted in someone getting killed, and maybe it would have been a wake up call.
Meyer's idea of "mentoring" those with talent is apparently to say "don't get caught and stay off the radar." Meyer and Dantonio must be brothers from different mothers.
Had Urban not coddled Aaron and kept him on the team, Aaron would have killed MORE people. Urban did us all a favor by not kicking him off the team and thus limited the number of murders committed by Aaorn. We should all be grateful to Urban for how he handled Aaron while at Florida.
He added his argument that Hernandez probably would have been in the same situation regardless of where he went to college.
This is probably the 4th or 5th topic where we, whether it's intentional or not, are trying to connect Hernandez's alleged murder to Urban's disciplinary actions (or lack thereof) at Florida. Sure, Urban could've done much better at Florida, but I get the feeling we're all hoping if we dig up enough dirt on Florida that we'll get Urban charged as an accessory to the murder...which is silly. Hernandez is just an idiot
Agreed that Urban is not an accessory and Hernandez was probably gonna do what Hernandez was gonna do, but don't we think Urban is somewhat obligated to explain himself? It would be no different than anyone else that provided a reference on behalf of someone seeking employment. If you recommend someone and it doesn't work out, the person who recommended them should explain themselves. And, his celebrity status and the fact that it's a murder makes it that much more desirable.
On another note, I personally just want to see Urban and/or OSU fail to a certain degree, so any chance to call an impropriety on their part I will certainly take!
and I want to see Michigan prevail over a full-strength tsiO. Anything else would be a hollow victory.
You are making an awful lot of assumptions, and then asking for answers that might not exist anywhere other than in your mind. What recommendation did Meyer provide, and to whom?
What assumptions, just Hernandez's guilt or more? My post below notes at this point it is only an allegation. I think Hernandez derserves the right to a defense. But, if you give a recommendation based on character issues to a guy that gets fired and charged with murder, that is enough to question why he was recommended don't you think? I heard that Meyer recommended Hernandez when Belichick and the Pats were interested in drafting him. Come to think of it I beleive I heard that on "The Herd", so let me see if I can find any evidence of anyone else saying that. But, I don't know what Meyer knows, but I am certainly interested.
I agree that I would much prefer Michigan to prevail over a full strength OSU. But, a win over a less than full strength squad is better than a loss any day. So, until the day comes when we beat them with regularlity or at least like half the time I will take wins any way I can get them. I enjoyed the 2011 win all the same, didn't you?
EDIT: Yes, others have said the same thing, that Meyer gave a recommendation to Belichick on Hernandez prior to the Patriots drafting him. "Maybe Belichick placed too much faith in the predraft feedback of friend Urban Meyer. Belichick selected five University of Florida players from when Meyer was the Gators’ head coach. Hernandez, Spikes and Cunningham are three of them."
Maybe he didn't.
"Maybe Belichick placed too much faith in the predraft feedback of friend Urban Meyer. Belichick selected five University of Florida players from when Meyer was the Gators’ head coach. Hernandez, Spikes and Cunningham are three of them."
No, why? Are you thinking Meyer's recommendation is not significant? Are you saying there was no recommendation? I'm not sure what your argument is here. I asked you what assumptions I'm making and you propose another question. There are a lot of questions we don't know the answers to which is why I think people, myself included, want to hear from Meyer. Aren't you interested in hearing from Meyer?
world an explanation for something that happened when Hernandez was in college. Unless someone can convince me he broke a law, I won't change my mind. If that happens, the answer is due in court, not in the media. Meyer is a college coach, he doesn't owe anything to the NFL. Yes, I suspect it is to his advantage to maintain a good relationship with the various staffs. If he has strayed too far off the path, that is between him and the staffs, not the media and not the public. In addition, Hernandez has not been found guilty of anything. What exactly would you have Meyer answer for? Do you really think that Meyer should say anything when we are talking about a potential murder trial? I'm guessing a defense attorney would be happy to run with that.
Do you know if there was a recommendation? If not, I would call that an assumption. The article you linked stated "maybe Belicheck placed too much faith..." that is hardly proof of anything, and is shading toward trying to create news, not report news. I can just as easily state that "maybe he didn't". If you have proof otherwise, I'll stand corrected. It won't change my other opinions, though.
The former Colt GM stated that the Colts decided to steer clear. Are they smarter than Belichick? Did Meyer lie to Belichick but not to Polian? Is it against the law to lie to Belichick? How many times has Belichick taken a chance on an iffy player? Did Meyer lie to him in every one of those instances? Do the former coaches of those players owe Belichick or the public at large an explanation? Can we go back to Chuck Long, I'd love an explantion for that!
In addition, "I'll take any win I can get" strays perilously close to "win at any cost". Not interested.
I'm going to concede this one to you. I'm starting to feel like I'm defending Meyer, I don't really care for the guy.
All I know is that I have seen multiple media sources say Meyer provided a recommendation to Belichick. Was that a formal letter of recommendation?...doubtful. Meyer and Belichick are supposedly friends, so maybe it was an ongoing pre-draft discussion or maybe just a simple conversation. Ultimately Belichick made a calculated risk. But, how much weight Belichick put into Meyer's opinion of Hernandez and what Meyer's opinion of Hernandez is are somewhat unknown which makes hearing from Meyer even more interesting. I think the bottom line is that Meyer has insight into a person and a situation that people are trying to understand. It's not any more complicated than that.
Regarding winning at all costs you are making quite a leap beyond what I said. What your favorite team does versus what your rival does are two very different things. Me wanting to beat OSU regardless of whether they are at full strength or not says nothing to what UM should or should not do. I never said UM should win at all costs. I want UM to do things the right way. But, if your opponent chooses not to and is at less than full strength because of that and you win…it's still a win. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'd guess if we took a look back at your comments on the board after our win in 2011 you were celebrating with the rest of us.
(whispering, from indescernible distance) But you're simply perpetuating the very thing you claim to HATE ...

While I don't think it's fair to fault Meyer for Hernandez allegedly killing someone, I do think Meyer has an obligation, and potentially even a legal obligation, to comment on what exactly went down when Hernandez and Meyer were at Florida. Is it fair to say Urban has fault in Hernandez's behavior?...debatable. Is it fair to want further explanation and insight into the coach/player relationship of a former player that went on to become an alleged multiple victim murder?...absolutely. Because Meyer knew Hernandez was troubled, offered mentoring above and beyond what it appears was available to other players, and because he gave a recommendation to Belichick I think an explanation from Meyer is warranted. I don't see this going away until that happens.
admittedly, it was a low standard.
"I just received an email from a friend where there is an accusation of multiple failed drug tests by Hernandez covered up by University of Florida or the coaching staff. This is absolutely not true," Meyer texted to the paper. "Hernandez was held to the same drug testing policy as every other player."
The bold part is where he was refuting it.
To be fair, if the drug testing policy was that you were allowed to fail a certain number of drug tests before there were consequences, maybe Hernandez never reached that threshold. If he wasn't over the line, no need for a coverup.
Urbz would in all likelihood have had the authority to suspend him regardless if the number of tests he failed was 2 or 20. That's where a lack of accountability and preferential treatment of star players reflects on Urban.
I think Meyer needs to add "Do Not Kill people" to his list of morals/code/rules or whatever in the locker room.
Man...fuck Urban Meyer. We talk more about him than we do about Hoke.
Who was Hernandez's college coach that helped shape him into a quality young man fit to contribute to society? Oh yeah....
Of course he held Hernandez to the same standard as everyone else. That just happened to be a very low standard with zero accountability.
