Possible Graduate School Transfers?
I've heard people talk about Jordan Morgan, and the possibility of him transferring for his 5th year of eligibility (if McGary returns). The NCAA allows this and doesn't make you sit out a season.
This made me think, with THJ leaving (best of luck to him in the NBA), do we possibly look into filling his void with a 5th year senior? It'd be an easy way to fill a scholarship for the 2013-14 season.
Does anyone know of any options out there?
Edit: The talk about Jordan Morgan transferring is all speculation from random internet posters. This has no credibility whatsoever, and my personal belief is that he's here to stay.
He should stick to actin' in movies and brewing lagers.
just go get whoever the Wisconsin quarterback is.
Blake McLimans?
no way we're going to use all our schollies - nothing to lose by bringing him back.
Of the possibility of Morgan transferring from who? I mean, people talk about a lot of things, but is this just idle speculation ("Morgan might be annoyed about his limited minutes; I could see him transferring," says man at the bar during the L'ville game) or something from someone connected to Morgan?
If the former; I don't know, man. I'm not a fan of threads based on "people talking" about random shit, you know?
Short answer: not aware of any grad transfers to UM.
I just don't see Morgan leaving. He seems too blue to leave.
he is always described as a student and an athlete. supposedly completing his IOE degree in the engineering college.
not likely quiting to get more minutes after starting many games at michigan over 3 years.
People wouldn't take the Morgan comment out of context. I've heard random opinions on it (no one credible). I'm not saying he's leaving or anything of that nature. It's all speculation.
intervening over, just setting some standards.
People can post what they want here.
But as you said -- it's all speculation. Not sure what you mean that you hope people don't take the comment out of context -- there is no context, just speculation. Really not a fan of threads being started speculating about transfers, but whatever. I said my piece.
I like the Drew Crawford from NW transfer into UM idea, found in the mgo.licio.us a few weeks back.
According to Tribune writer Teddy Greenstein, Crawford is being heavily pursued by Missouri and Marquette. My bet is that he stays with Northwestern though.
Could Michigan give him a scholarship? Wouldn't the rule apply wherein a Big Ten school can't give a scholarship to a guy coming from another Big Ten school?
which was changed two (I believe) years ago. It used to be that the Big Ten prohibited intra-conference transfers from getting scholarships, which they changed to counting the year the NCAA requires the player to sit out against eligibility. I don't think that would count for a grad-year guy, though, since they don't have to sit out in the first place.
If the roster stays as it is today, I believe we still have one more open scholarship that will go unused this upcomming year which is a shame. I think Beilein said he'd fill the roster through walk on auditions but if there is a legit 5th year grad school opportunity I think that would be preferable.
Opened this thread expecting it to be about the backup QB situation. That being said, I don't see Morgan transferring anywhere. He will get plenty of minutes next year when we go with the 2 big lineup and when McGary gets in foul trouble. He could even reclaim the starting job from McGary with a strong off-season.
I think this only becomes a valid option if we lose McGary and GRIII. If we lose all 4 players, here's our roster:
PG: Walton, Spike
SG/SF: Stauskas, Levert, Irvin
PF/C: Horford, Morgan, Bielfeldt, Donnal
That's still a roster full of viable B1G players, but man alive the depth is thin. One injury ruins everything with only 9 scholarship players. I would definitely comb the transfer wires for Luke Hancock or Brandon Wood-type players to fill some minutes and provide much-needed depth.
How do you prepare for this type of NBA roster turnover? I guess John Calipari - and maybe Tom Crean - knows.
I would love to be a potential walk-on next year...lots of opportunities. Maybe Freddie Hunter has an age-appropriate son to bolster our roster?
Oh man, I thought this would be about some hot QB prospect...
Does Michigan not provide a graduate program he wants to enroll into?
Not every 5th year guy can just transfer without having met the above criteria. Morgan is getting an engineering degree. If he finished that type of degree while playing basketball in 4 years, kudos to him. Regardless, I'd bet it's tough to find an engineering graduate program that isn't offered at UM so that he can transfer. Unless he goes into a entirely different field.

I think he did finish his IOE degree in 4 years. Belein said that recently, I think.
Morgan is IOE, and I believe he is finishing his Undergrad degree this year. It is very common for IOE undergrads to spend an extra year and get their Masters from UM, and I am assuming Morgan would do the same (He could also do a masters in Financial Engineering or Auto Manufacturing Engineering, but those are a bit trickier in terms of credits.
People tend to bash IOE for whatever reason, but it is one of the most practical and applicable degrees the University offers in terms of the real world. It is also the second ranked program for Industrial Engineering in the country.
I mentoned last night in the banquet thread. I have friends who did IOE and got jobs. I have friends in EE and Aerospace who got jobs out the field or are in grad school dicking around.
Am I the only one thinking that should we lose GRIII to the draft and McGary stays, Morgan will start at the 4 with McGary at the 5. It will limit our 3 point shooting but will give us a far bigger presence in the paint, improve our defensive matchups and help out on the boards.
You almost have to do it at that point. You can't split 160 minutes between Spike / Walton / Irvin / LeVert / Stauskas / (whatever of the 5-10 remaining would go to Max or Morgan at the 4).
If they're both on the roster I think it's inevitable that we play two bigs a fair amount between Mitch, Jordan, and Jon. But I think McGary fits much better at the 4 than Morgan does offensively. Also could be a chance to sell him on another year...expand your range to the 3 point line and prove you can hit the long jumpers like Payne has. Don't want him to live out there but that's a huge plus at the pro (and college, obviously) level.
Agreed. If McGary can develop a 3 pointer he will be deadly. He showed great progress with his elbow jumper and his shot looks smooth so it could happen. No clue how he isnt good at free throws though.
Don't need another big man, especially if McGary stays. That gives us McGary, Morgan, Horford, Bielfeldt, and Donnal. If they take a transfer, it will be a point guard most likely. Walton and Spike are good, but that is thin, thin depth. Wings should be alright because if there is an injury to anybody (GR3, Irvin, LeVert, Stauskas) they can just move to a bigger lineup and move GR3 to the 3 spot. The only guys Beilein could consider at point besides Spike and Walton are Stauskas and LeVert and both would probably not be good options.
Jordan Morgan had ZERO blocks in conference games. And THREE blocks all season none since 12/15 against WVU.
That said, he does give us a decent finisher underneath when deep in the post and relatively unguarded but can't create his own offense like McGary. Decent on the boards too.
Jon Horford is the guy I'm excited about. It's easy to forget he's a rising junior and if McGary leaves after next year, I think he's a quality B1G big man.
Having all three is quite a luxury. Having two is nice but scary. Having one....uh, oh.
