Who do we get to replace Jerry Montgomery?
Brick Haley DL coach for LSU (former Baylor DC/Chicago Bears DL coach)
Jim Panagos DL coach for Rutgers (impressive resume (national DL coach of year in 2009, 39th total rushing defense at UCF in 2007, 35th total rushing defense at UCF in 2008, 4th total rushing defense at UCF in 2009, 8th total rushing defense at UCF in 2010, 16th total rushing defense at UCF in 2011, 6th total rushing defense at Rutgers in 2012)
other?

I think the bigger barrier to bringing back Soup is, then what do you do with Hecklinski? You can't move him to running backs, obviously. O-Line has Funk. Hecklinski has been a QB coach in the past, but I don't get the sense that Borges would be interested in letting someone else coach his QBs. Otherwise you could put Hecklinski on Tight Ends and make Ferrigno special teams only, which might be a good way to go,
Still, it seems preferable to just hire another defensive coach.

I hope we go after some NFL talent or someone with southern ties. Someone who is a recruiting guru.

Do you know that money was an issue for Montgomery?

That's what I think too. Add an amzing recruiter to the already stellar coaching staff and we'll be set.

Dick Bumpas or Chris Kiffin would be nice. It would cost us, but it'd be worth it. I guess Tosh would also be a stellar haul as a recruiter, if we could find a way to keep him.

It's been reported that Michigan countered with a "competitive package", so doesn't sound like it was money. Even though they both went to Iowa, they didn't overlap so not clear there would be some sort of allegiance there. Must have felt it was a better opportunity for him. With both Hoke and Mattison as DL coaches it's always possible he felt like he didn't have complete autonomy, too, but that's speculation on my part.

Glen Steele anyone?
February 24th, 2013 at 6:43 AM ^
I knew Glen Steele in college. He was a terrific player and would probably make an effective coach, but he doesn't have the personality of a born recruiter. Plus, I don't really know what he's up to these days. So, whether he is a plausible candidate kind of depends on what you want out of a new hire.
February 23rd, 2013 at 6:08 PM ^
Van Bergen? He's got the personality and energy to be a great recruiter, a love for Michigan, and I don't think he's currently on an NFL roster. Hell, as long as I'm throwing darts at a dartboard while blindfolded, why not Kovacs?..or Roundtree?
February 23rd, 2013 at 6:09 PM ^
Maybe after a few years in the NFL. From my understanding Van Bergen is committed to making a run at the pros for as long as he can.

seems a more typical route to coaching staff.
(ohio did well with moving fickel through the ranks from ga to dc and vrabel went directly to coaching staff from nfl)

If I recall correctly before the hiring of Montgomery was announced, Brian's ideal candidate was Beyonce.
February 23rd, 2013 at 6:57 PM ^
Is Jay-Z also coming? Oh wait, package deals rarely pan out.
February 23rd, 2013 at 7:13 PM ^
Does anyone know how this has affected Bryan Mone? Would think it might discourage him some possibly.
As for who we are going to hire next.. I think it's going to be another linebacker coach specifically for the strongside. If the indications of Mattison moving down to the D-line with Hoke are true then it only makes sense. Can't wait to find out who it will be and hopefully they can find someone quickly.
February 23rd, 2013 at 7:31 PM ^
Right after posting the bryan mone question I had a guy close to the situation tell me that the Montgomery to Oklahomawill not be effecting Bryan at all and he is committed to The University of Michigan til' the end!!!!
Very good news

I was curious about that situation as well. I'm pretty excited about him

recruiting is always a key part of the job.
mattison remains a great recruiter but men in their 60s may have limited stamina and patience for pursuing the commitment of 15-18 year old boys.
hoke and mattison have the d-line technique, teaching and motivation under control.
