They should jump up after knocking off undefeated Ohio in the toilet bowl on saturday.

Stanfords upset basically eliminated Michigan's chances of being a BCS team
Best case: Auto bids go to 1) ND, 2) Bama, 3) K State, 4) FSU, 5) Stanford 6) Nebraska 7) Rutgers
8) 1 SEC at large team
9) Oregon likely gets an at large bid
10) Clemson with 2 losses, Oklahoma with 3 losses or us with 3 losses. We would probably get picked over oklahoma, but I don't love our chances to get picked over clemson with them having a better record

Why do users down vote this post? Just because it's not a "glass is half-full" homer-ish post? The censorship powers on this site get abused.
Rant aside, this was an informative post. Thanks for posting.

Best case is Stanford loses at UCLA next week taking them out. If Clemson does lose they will not be getting a BCS bid after the hammering they got last year by West Virginia.
November 18th, 2012 at 9:03 PM ^
We only need to jump 5 more spots, I figure a win over Ohio would give us a 3-4 spots and we would only need another team or two in front of us to lose to get in the top 14.
At this point there is no chance Nebraska loses to Iowa.
November 18th, 2012 at 9:15 PM ^
Clemson is not going to drop below #14, even with a loss. I don't really love our chances of being picked over them for that last at large spot with them having one less loss.

Computers hate Clemson. They would fall out of the top 14 or more importantly below us wif we beat ohio

That says we're 18...
edit: ok got it now

With the Oregon loss now just being in the top 14 isn't enough. Pac 12 will get 2 teams in, SEC will get 2 (you think?), and ND is in. Oklahoma is currently on track for that last at large bid - We need them to lose to have a shot.
But even so, I think Iowa beating Nebraska is a more likely scenario than getting an at large.
Thanks Chip!
November 19th, 2012 at 9:53 AM ^
The Pac12 only gets 2 teams in if the Ducks get to title game. No one is taking Stanford for an at large over Michigan or quite frankly anybody. Plus teams that lose there last regular season game or a championship game tend not to be popular with bowls. Stanford would have 3 losses and there big win over Oregon while we would have OSU
November 18th, 2012 at 9:12 PM ^
Oregon and KSU changes nothing really. Only two SEC teams can go and the other 4 will miss out.
November 18th, 2012 at 9:16 PM ^
Honestly even if we do get in the top 14 and there's an at large bid for us I don't think we're going to sneak into a BCS game on our name alone two years in a row. I felt that way before Iowa and I still feel like that now. I just hope we can win our bowl. We've finally put together an all around solid game for a full 60 minutes so hopefully we can take whoever we get paired with in the bowl game. I'm just happy we're back on the path of being a lock for a bowl every year.

Let's go Hawks!!!!!
November 18th, 2012 at 9:22 PM ^
With a win Saturday, chances are that we'll climb quite a bit by the end of the year. Here are the remaining games for the teams within obvious reach of us:
#18 Rutgers: @ Pitt, vs. #20 Louisville
#17 UCLA: vs. #8 Stanford, vs./at #8 Stanford or #5 Oregon
#16 Texas: @ #40 TCU, vs. #6 Kansas State
#15 Oregon State: vs. #5 Oregon (& possibly UCLA)
#14 Nebraska: @ Iowa (& probably vs. #36 Wisconsin)
#13 Oklahoma: vs #21 Oklahoma State, @ #40 TCU
#12 South Carolina: @ #11 Clemson
#11 Clemson: vs. #12 South Carolina
#10 Florida State: vs. #4 Florida, ACC Championship Game

ND being at #1 makes me sick, and a little nervous that they could actually win. Then I get excited about them being completely disrobed and spanked on a national stage. I don't know what I want.
November 18th, 2012 at 9:38 PM ^
If ND finished #1, theyd still be top 5 to open next year...that sets up nicely for us when we play them early next year.

I agree with being sick of the SEC, but that is a reality that I can accept. If ND wins, my mind and those like mine will reject it and the matrix will implode, killing all of us along with it. I'm sorry if I don't believe that the Oracle is that influencial or that the Architect is dumb enough to let it happen. This is my working theory anyway.
Secondary hypothesis: The Mayans were right all along... ***12-21-12***
November 18th, 2012 at 9:56 PM ^
about Notre Dame being #1 is based entirely on the Mayans being right

For me the dream scenario is that ND drops out of the title game slot after all the conference championship games are played and an SEC champ and Big 12 champ slides up to the #1/#2 spots. It won't happen, but it would be great to see the Irish get screwed over by their lack of conference affiliation.
November 18th, 2012 at 10:18 PM ^
should crack the top 15 if we beat osu
November 18th, 2012 at 10:23 PM ^
So is there a legitimate possibility we sneak into a BCS game, I hope when they decide they take into account the fact we lost to the two top teams in the country and the probable big 10 champs
November 18th, 2012 at 10:26 PM ^
Anyone wishing for ND to win it to get it out of the SEC's grasp has no idea what is in Pandora's box. It would be AWFUL. Can you imagine the amount of crap we'd have to hear about Notre Dame for literally the next 10 years? If they've been riding all of their seasons from 1990 and before so hard up to the present day, do you know how much mileage they'll get out of a title?? Go USC or Bama or Georgia or KState/Oregon

DON'T OPEN THAT BOX.
November 19th, 2012 at 10:21 AM ^
I'm perfectly fine sitting through another winter of SEC fans telling the internet how superior their football conference is versus having to listen to everyone celebrate how the Irish have returned to glory. If ND makes the title game, then I want them shellacked to such a degree as to remove any doubt that they are truly a 9-3, 8-4 team masquerading as a BCS title contender.
November 18th, 2012 at 10:59 PM ^
Somehow the computers dropped Michigan three spots to 19 when we were 16 last week. Apparently destroying a team is bad...
November 19th, 2012 at 9:14 AM ^
Kind of like how we actually fell a spot last year after beating Ohio?
I don't get it.

from a ratings standpoint a BCS Bowl may reach for UM
November 19th, 2012 at 12:42 AM ^
so long as we beat Ohio this weekend.
There are 10 BCS bowl slots. 5 go to conf champs and one to ND. This leaves 4 at-large slots and none will go to a non-AQ (thank you Utah State) this year.
The SEC gets one at-large fo certain. The Big 12 will also get one as both Oklahoma and Texas are huge draws - both might go to the BCS if both win this weekend and OK is conf champ. The ACC should also get one at large as Clemson is a big draw and will have at most 2 losses.
This leaves one slot for the PAC-12 and B1G (Big East is a non-starter for the bowls), If UCLA beats Stanford this weekend and Oregon beats UCLA in the championship then it is a 3 loss Michigan versus and 3 loss Stanford or 3 loss UCLA. I think Michigan is the more attractive candidate for the bowls especially if it is the Sugar or Orange.
nb God do the computers hate the ACC! FSU not even in the top 25 in one ranking???
November 19th, 2012 at 9:55 AM ^
Either an OK loss or a Texas loss to TCU and a Texas win over KSU would take the Big12 down to 1.

were right, the planets will line up on the day stated then the next day they won't. Thank you Mayans

We lost to Alabama - first Game of Year, ND (closer game than it should have been given the turnovers), and to Nebraska in Lincoln without Denard in a game that could easily have turned out differently had Gardner been prepared to step in at QB.
Nothing anybody on this board isn't thinking already, I just can't stand that we don't get more credit given the teams we have lost to.
Here's to hopping DG get's his medical redshirt, Denard is utilized like he was last week against Iowa, and we can finish out the year with at least two more wins and a prayer for 3 if somehow Iowa can pull an upset. It is at Iowa - just too bad it wasn't a night game.
