Denard Post Game Comments
After tonights game it is good to see that Denard has become a leader on this team. I always hated the Tebow post game "no team will try harder" speach, but I like what Denard had to say following tonights loss.
"I want to say sorry to everybody who watched football, watched Michigan football and whoever follows Michigan football, I want to say sorry and it won't happen no more. I am going to be accountable for the rest of the season. I'll tell you that much."
Most disappointed I've been in I don't know how long, the 22 years I've been living, this is the most disappointed I've been in myself.

I hope we can put this behind us and move into B1G play and get a big win two weeks from now at Purdue.

(resident of a train-of-thought glass house myself), but your response was actually elegant, very well structured and nicely put. And I agree, so that trumps all.

Denard had every chance to leave. He stayed. He doesn't care about his records, only about the team, the team, the team. If that isn't a Michigan quarterback, I don't know what is.

You critique my above post by saying, "Maybe Denard asked Borges to work with him to make him a better passer so that he at least has a shot at QB at the next level."
And then you give "+1,000,000" to the comment saying, "Denard had every chance to leave. He stayed. He doesn't care about his records, only about the team, the team, the team. If that isn't a Michigan quarterback, I don't know what is."
So which is it?

From the general brilliance of your post I'd guess that you also blame part of last night's loss on Hoke "not understanding the rivalry." No -- you don't exactly say that, but your level of reasoning indicates that you'd buy into the idea.
"we just need to get back to hardnosed football"
Right -- that will fix all those interceptions.

"and that is why hoke wants him to be a pocket passer, because thats michigan football." - wlw723
Just so you know, among the Michigan career leaders in rushing yards (20th), rushing attempts (16th) and rushing TDs (6th) is a guy named Rick Leach. Let's not confine ourselves to the notion that we've never had a legitimate rushing threat at the position. Not often before Denard perhaps, and definitely not as prolific, but it isn't the first time.
As for the postgame speech, I think this encapsulates why we like Denard as much as we do beyond his athletic ability. He's a team leader, and he very much feels accountable in both success and failure. Good leaders will let you know what went amiss just as quickly as they will praise what went right, and Denard can do that. This was not the birthday present he wanted, to be sure, but there is conference play up next and still the potential for great things this season - we've gone to several Rose Bowls after a 2-2 OOC performance.

If Denard felt so Bad about losing he would have listened to the coaches and imporved his mechanics and tried to improve as a QB. He chose to smile and talk unintelligably. if he was a team player he would refuse to play QB for the simple fact he cant throw any better than Taylor Lewan

Wait until the media-hyped, AP top 5, Returned-to-Glory Irish lose a game because they are actually just an overrated team.
That'll be fun.
Something, something, Ty Willingham. Can't wait.

Didn't Denard eat a sack right before that FG, making it much more difficult than if he had just thrown the ball away? Not that it's all his fault, the pass pro didn't seem great... but I partially blame the missed FG on him, too...

Bellomy threw a pass in teh Bama game? Remember what happened? What makes you think for a second he's ready to lead a Michigan team on the road against a top 25 team with a darn good defense to a comeback victory?
Some people here need some serious perspective.

Feel bad for the kid but don't make excuses for him. I love Denard, it'll be a bitter sweet feeling when he has moved on.

Criticism is fine but the negativity needs to cease because that was a huge factor during the unsuccessful Rich Rod years. Everyone needs to pull in the same direction.

a class act, a hard working leader, and one who smiles through the worst of times. Yes, I am accustomed to him throwing interceptions that make me scratch my head. But to get so emotional and criticize him the way some do is offensive. He is a young man on a huge stage at the greatest University in the world, and he has contributed so much to the program that words don't adequately capture it. I am as frustrated as anyone, seeing a UM squad that I believe would beat this ND squad 9 of 10 times, give the game away. ND's defense was not so great; Denard nearly single-handedly gave the game away. However, he should be forgiven and honored, as no one can question his commitment, his integrity, and his accountability. Count me as a huge fan of Denard, for everything he is, and for his vigor and commitment to UM.

I've never been comfortable ripping college kids; especially the ones who chose to represent the team and the school and the state I love.

Be accountable to your brothers on the team and your coaches. I'm a grown man with all sorts of real life things that can upset me or really make my life difficult/awful/etc.
The grown men that put so much of their self-identity into what you do on the field have issues that you can't fix even with Heisman trophies and National Championships. You're not accountable to them, and if you base your self worth on what people like that think and say, then you'll never be good enough.
September 23rd, 2012 at 9:22 AM ^
Unfortunately, some people will only realize how special Denard really has been for Michigan when he is no longer playing for them.
September 23rd, 2012 at 10:43 AM ^
but when it came time to beat good defenses he never could do it. It won't be a surprise if Bellamy/Gardner struggle next year because they are first year starters. But at least in Bellamy's case, he fits the offense.
Denard is a fish out of water in this offense.

If you remember back to the MSU game two years ago, Denard "took accountability" for his mistakes. The problem has never been that he shifted blame. The problem is that he's making the same mistakes. I for one refuse to continually fluff Denard because he's humble and has a great smile. He has serious deficits as a QB, and continues making the same mistakes: chief among them, forcing the ball. So many posters here are engaging in simple hero-worship: I'll miss you Denard! Smile for me!!! Owning up to your mistakes is fine. FIXING them is a mark of true leadership.

its all good to say things like this, it shows his passion for this team, but tebow was able to make the changes necessary to make sure it doesn't happen again, but I don't think denard has the ability to stop throwing INTs, if he did he would have gotten over it by now. Its like w're giving this guy a pass on sucking at his job because hes a good guy.
September 23rd, 2012 at 2:11 PM ^
write off Denard before he even has a chance to back up his statements. Go ahead.
Meanwhile, I choose to root for the guy. He's humble, honest, and pretty much the nicest QB to ever play for Michigan. I want that guy to succeed. Oh, and did he "suck at his job" when he beat Notre Dame the past two seasons, Ohio, Nebraska last year etc.? The guy has a successful history, yet you choose to ignore everything that has happened before last night because obviously that makes complete sense.

Denard giveth, Denard taketh away.
This is how it works when one player is 110% of your offense. You can't bitch about the bad when you've enjoyed the good.
September 23rd, 2012 at 10:38 AM ^
I know I am going to be negged for this, but the truth is that the kid is not a good fit for this offense. He is an option QB trying to play Borgas' Frankenstein offense. But even noting the differences in offense, Denard still turned the ball over at an alarming rate under Rodriguez.
Throughout his career Denard has been equal parts brilliant and mistake prone. He is the most inconsistent QB I have seen play for UM. Pick 6's and long sensational rushing touchdowns, last second wins and blowout losses, the man has literally given us everything.
Denard Robinson is a great kid. A fine representative of the university. He is going to be remember as a spectacular player--for good and ill.
