FG questions
First, great win today! The team looked great in multiple facets. Hoke and crew has got this team firing on all cylinders the last couple weeks.
I am not trying to be negative here, just trying to come up with answers to some questions relative to our FG kicking. The group of guys seated near me today were talking at halftime about how Michigan has struggled with FGs for several seasons now but that how it hasn't cost us at the end of a game. Clearly it hurt us last year during games and changed our strategy but we couldnt think of any last minute losses.
Essentially, we had three questions:
When is the last time we made a 50+ yard FG?
When is the last time we lost because we missed a last minute FG? (Could be Toledo in 08 or App St in 07)
When is the last time we won on a last minute FG? (We came up with Remy Hamilton against ND in 94 - there has to be a more recent one than this).
Would love to know, these arent easy questions to google.

And if you want to get technical, the Orange Bowl was won on a kick.

<br>But was FG kicking really a problem today? Made one into the wind. Barely missed a long one.

The Nebraska kicker hit a 50 yarder into the wind that looked like it could have gone 55+ although the wind lulled during the play.

But they had a punt blocked, and their kickoffs weren't as good as ours (even before they dropped the returns). We knew going in their kickers were really good. But I'm sure they're complaining more on a Husker board about their kick game.

was in 02 when we beat Washington with a last second field goal.

Olesnavage (sp?) hit a 52 yarder against Purdue in 09 and the Brabbs game winner against Washington was epic.

game winning FG to beat Washington; 2002.

I think he's doing great job. We can't expect him to hit every field goal from 40+.

I'm pretty sure Rivas hit several last minute game winners. Minnesota in 03 comes to mind. Purdue in...04? I feel like there were a couple more, but those are the only ones I can think of.
As for hitting a 50+ yarder...Epstein? He could be erratic, but he had a leg. I don't think Rivas ever hit one and we definitely haven't hit one since Rivas left.

msu and/or iowa in OT for rivas

a huge jump from last year and misses are maybe a foot off. Nothing like missing by 10 yds one way or another a year ago.
If he can be consistent inside 40yds I think we will all be happy for this season.

As has been mentioned but let me reminisce about my first game in the big house. The most exciting thing about that kick is that we had a bunch of missed FGs earlier in the game, to the point where the crowd groaned as the kicking team came out.

hey I'm sorry, I did my best,

Lopata had a 52yarder against Utah.

OT against MSU 2005 more recent than Brabbs

Gibbons you... Put if through the uprights. Yeah.....................
November 19th, 2011 at 7:10 PM ^
People are saying Brabbs... but I still maintain there is NO way he made that kick.
inconceivable.

Gibbons will be ok. Once he nails a few 40+ FGs he'll relax and get more consistent from distance - he already is on the mid-range. I really think he is still pressing a little bit on the long ones.

Gibbons is 9-13 on field goals this season. We can't really complain about that.
November 20th, 2011 at 1:03 AM ^
Of course we can. He had missed four.

We haven't had great Special Teams play in years. Cant remember many punt/kickoff returns for TDs either

I remember Hayden Epstein missing a ton of field goals. But he did make a 57 yarder against Sparty in 1999.
Here are the career longest...
1. Hayden Epstein - 57 yard FG vs. Michigan State (1999)
2. Jay Feely - 51 yard FG vs. Michigan State (1998)
2. Jason Olesnavage - 51 yard FG vs. Purdue (2009)
4. K.C. Lopata - 50 yard FG vs. Utah (2008)
I think Mike Gillette made a few 50 yarders in the 1980's but I can't think of any other.
I made this game winning FG video a couple years ago....

kick off return...stonum vs Notre Dame

and Odoms had a punt return for a TD I think his Freshman year, but 1 Punt and 1 Kickoff return does not constitute great special teams play

Neg away fellas. My bad...
November 19th, 2011 at 8:57 PM ^
Kickoff returns are few and far between, but Breaston had several punt returns for a TD, Illinois in 03 being my favorite. I think Leon Hall had a couple as well and Odoms had one against Purdue in 09 I think.
